Hi All, My 2008 Uly has a full micron exhaust - the serpent system which has fluid hydro-formed tuned length headers, and a can that has hydro-formed exit pipes. It is a great exhaust - I love it, and it really does add to the power of the bike. It's also bloody loud, which I also enjoy, however lots of others in the UK don't - namely the people that run trackdays. I'm signed up for 3 trackdays over the next 4 months, and all the courses have a 103db noise limit (measured at 7000 rpm!) (or as close to 7k revs it will go). An alternative system is the HP aero 45mm headers and an HP reverso can, however that is the best part of £1000 ($1800 USD!) which is just too much for me. Instead I've been thinking to use my friends milling machine, and make some removable baffles for the exhaust. I can then keep my beloved micron, and if done right the baffles should not diminish power too much. Micron do not sell them – the system is a pure race system, and that’s that. Sorry for the long intro - but I thought it'd help to explain where I was coming from! Is there anyone that can offer some advice on making the baffles? All I know is that essentially they are a short tube, sometimes perforated, that slips into the outlet pipe, and has a collar at the end which seals the outlet pipe to its new smaller diameter? Any advice or insight appreciated. |

Check Ebay for the harley baffles, they are cheep flow okay and can be removed easily after the trackday. You may also want to aim the exit of the exhaust in a direction that reduces the test reading suck as towards the ground or away from the meter if possible... |

what size is the exhaust exit? I am also thinking of making a insert for my Drummer pipe. not for track days but for traveling through Yosemite and Yellow Stone Parks this summer. when you come up with something let the rest of us know please. |

It's a micron serpent, so has these oval outlets, which have a small lip on them too. They are about 3" wide by 1.25" wide, and angled down. Makes it tricky. A friend of mine had an insert made by a machinist for a Two Brothers exhaust. It cost him $135. It was a more straightforward project than it would be for your micron but it did include before and after flow measurements. I priced the stock insert for my Leo Vince and it was $70 each. |

Don't know how well it would work here, but for closed-circuit road racing, where sound is an issue, a simple tubing elbow works surprisingly well. Redirecting the exhaust to blow straight up, or straight down, significantly reduces the sound pressure levels at the db meter with no notable affect on performance. Straight up is most favored at the track but is probably not going to work on a Buell. Mark in Arizona |

That's an option. We had considered cutting off the hydro-formed outlets, and replacing them with normal pipe (and then using a standard sort of baffle in the pipes). Not sure that pointing anywhere will help this thing - they are LOUD. My last exhaust was like a Special Ops, and it was quiet in comparison. |

I was told by the owner that he was told that the flow was the same but don't have any specific data or substantiation. It was machined aluminum tubing maybe 12-15" or so long. The perforations were not simple holes but almost slots. The perforations were also matched up with the the outer perforations in the muffler. There was no baffle at the inner end. The Two Brothers muffler configuration is vastly different from the Micron's because the insert could go straight into the muffler. You are probably stuck working with only the short outlet pipe. Spent a weekend with a MIG welder, a milling machine, and lots of BBQ. Don't go here. You cannot even touch the thing without a stupid reduction in horsepower. Mat from Trojan is completely correct. Thanks for the tips, but it is a new, and expensive exhaust for me.... bugger... |
