totway, if buell doesn't cover it, fix it yourself. my dealer wanted $170 for the belt and $400 to put it on. It will take you about 2 hrs to install if your a shade tree mech. Up side is, when you tell your better half how much $ you saved you will get to buy more stuff! (RR's lovin it)worked for me. |

Totway...if you need a belt, I have a spare I'll sell. Belt failures are rare and generally due to extraordinary events, not materials faulure. |

Printer cartridge question: I've got an H-P 2000C printer and the color ink cartridges have expired. They still have ink in them, they just have passed their expiration date (sort of like bread and milk in a grocery store I guess). They were printing fine, so I'm certain they are still good, just past some barcode or programmed-in date code. Question: is there a way to trick the stupid system into thinking the expiration date has not passed, or do I have to just pay the bucks and throw three perfectly good half-full/empty ink cartridges away? I guess this is how they react to the potential of people buying those hypodermic needle ink refillers at the department store. That's not what I'm doing, but it sure seems like they think I will, which I may just out of spite if I have to throw away three still good cartridges before they are really empty. Somehow this reminds me of that California reformulated gas that goes bad if you let it sit over the winter. grrrrrrr. Anyway, . MikeJ |

So how close was Sunday's so-called "Deer Fire" to us? The small pine trees behind the firefighters in this photo grow across the front of my yard, and you can see the rocks around the base of my mailbox just to the right of the firefighter in the red helmet. FB |

our house is in the right edge of all the smoke in this photo the Deer Fire was started by three kids playing with matches in their "fort", conveniently located about 150 feet from my front door. two of my neighbors tried to put out the fire, but beat a hasty retreat when a power transformer blew up above them from the heat. 40 structures were lost, 10 of them homes, but fortunately no injuries or lives lost. the fire jumped the street in front of my home (shown in first photo), and caught a small section of my yard on fire. i've always been good about maintaining a firebreak around my house, however, and it finally paid off, as the dry grass was too short to really get going, most likely saving not only my house, but my next door neighbor's as well. Steve (RoadRunner) You've got a X-1 with a removable frame section so you probably can change the belt in two hours. Totway has a M2 and IMHO there is no way in the whole wide world he is going to have a new belt on that bike in two hours. I'm proud to say that my son and I lived through a M2 belt change and it's no fun. You have to spread the frame enough to remove the rubber isolator (complete with metal pin that sticks out an extra 1/4 inch) and that requires two people and either the special factory frame spreader tool or a 4' crow bar. It's not a pretty sight and certainly not for the faint of heart. The next time I break a belt I going to convert to chain drive. I simply won't change another belt on a M2. |

and at nearly the same time the Deer Fire got going on Sunday, a woman wth a history of drug abuse kindly started the McNally Fire above Kernville, which has now burned 55,000 acres and is threatening ancient Sequoia groves. much of the area now burning was to have been included in Day Three of the BRAG All-Cal Tour would it have not been for the snowstorm that blew thru the night before. EBear and i talked on the All-Cal thread about the idyllic Road's End Resort, located on the north fork of the Kern River above Kernville. EBear, it is no more saw a CNN news crew in town this afternoon, look possibly for more tonite on TV. more pics, and stories, here. FB |

Thanks Court! I may take you up on it, trouble is the dealer won't even look at it until August 1st and THEN they will make the determination! I'm just going to tell them if its not covered don't even take it apart. I've had to go behind the mechanic and straighten out something almost every time they have had the bike plus the battery went bad at under 500 miles and they charged me $144 labor (2 hours diagnosis) and $94 for the battery!! They will never get the benefit of the doubt from me again!! |

RayMaines, Read the tech tips section on the ATC site on isolator changing. No frame speading is necessary. I changed my swingarm to a metmachex, it took several hours the first time. But the sealed bearings that came in the metmachex arm didn't let the swingarm pivot bearng nuts seat flat on the pivot block, so I took it all apart and redid it. Second time took just a few hours start to finish, and a lot of that is just jacking up the bike and supporting the engine and such. It is not a very hard job done the ATC way. Certainly not a good reason to go to a messy chain, IMHO. |

Snail, the Deer Fire is offically over as of today; this'll be the first night since Sunday that we haven't had firefighters camped out in the cul-de-sac keeping an eye on things. we came thru unscathed, except for the aformentioned burned patch in the front yard. coulda been much, much worse, and there was a photo in the Bakersfield paper yesterday or day before, taken not more than a couple hundred feet from us, showing one of my neighbors looking sadly at the smoldering remains of his motorcycle. this one was VERY close. now then the good news: Snail has a new Hayabusa! the bad news: you had to get a broken leg outta the deal? (damn Canucks!) as tough as you are, i'm sure life is good, right? hopefully the SS steel they used on you truly IS stainless (and not the crap that Buell headers are made from! ) more importantly, how's your missus? ride to keep ridin', FB |

Ferris, Jeans doing good, getting stronger every day. I actually think it makes her feel better to have to babysit me. Think I'll be picking up the new bike a week from Sat. I'll be riding before I can walk. Glad you came through the fire intact. Have done my share of forest fire fighting, and its pretty impressive when the trees 'crown'. Best wishes, Paul |

OH JOY! I have spent the past couple of days doing minor (thankfully) maintenance of my S2T. Here are some of the interesting things I have found: 1) My head breather kit (looks like a "Y" and runs into a filter over the rear inner fender vs. into the air filter)works better inverted. The oil was litterally running out of the tube and the filter. 2) The Dyna 2000 SF/DF * pin module, has * adjustable pins to dial in your particular engine's needs. Check those if you've got one. My unit was set up in "Single" mode, rev limiter set to 7000 rpm, and on the most enemic advance curve #4. Strange for a hot set up bike with a 7000 rpm limit to have to run on #4. Upon investigation I only have a single coil thus the switch needed to be in "Dual" mode. I was able to drop the advance to #2 with no pinging, the throttle response is out of this world and the sound a symphony. I still have a clatter when I get on or off the throttle to quicly. Sounds like sheet metal vibrating. Any Idea? Thanks, Jester |

Hey Ferris, I was watching the news here in Canada and was going to post tonight to see if anyone had heard from you after seeing a spot on the fire near lake isabella. Very glad to hear that you came through O.K. Very sorry to hear of the damage done to a beautiful area like yours. I hope life is almost back to normal. Dave W. P.S how's that shiny VFR?? |

Jester: those breather filters are designed to catch the liquid content of the blow-by and keep it from dripping. But, they get saturated. You have to clean them out periodically. Inverting the filter doesn't solve anything, it'll just build up that liquid in the line and blow it out sooner or later. Built up engines OFTEN require a softer than stock ignition curve. That's because higher compression and higher cylinder pressures can cause detonation. I've dyno tested that same module EXTENSIVELY on my S1 and it works best on curve 4, the softest curve. And it's only 10.5:1 with stock cams. S2's only have 9:1 compression stock, so sure, you can probably get away with something more aggressive like curve 1 or 2. 2 is the stock curve BTW. Finally, I can't imagine your bike ran on both cylinders if the module was set for single fire and you have a dual-fire coil. Only one cylinder would hit, because single fire divides the primary signal into two separate signals, one for each cylinder. LOTS of single fire coils are 2 coils in one package. Look at how many primary terminals it has. If it has 3 primary terminals, it's a single fire coil, i.e. 2 coils in one package. Ferris: VERY glad to hear you're okay! That can be a scary thing, speaking as someone who had it happen last year. AW |

I just found my header studs are rusted and coming out instead of the nut coming off. I guess it is time to get new ones or clean these up, but are they locktited in? |

It's an interference fit thread on the coarse threaded end of the stud. |

Jester, Ditto what Paul and Aaron said. My Nallinized M2 runs best on curve 3. Like Aaron said, a built higher compression engine can run more efficiently on a more conservative curve. It's safer too. My max power is curve three with the static timing retarded 3 degrees. One mark of a well built engine is it's ability to make optimum power with less advance. This reflects an improved efficiency of mixing within the combustion chamber. |

Loctite won't do much good on the exhaust header studs. They get way to hot for any type of organic compound to hang around. The loctite will just pyrolyze off when you fire the engine up the first time and go for a ride. |
