I feel more comfortable riding this bike using the dirtbike style - elbows up, lean the bike into the corner, weight the outside peg, foot out depending on speed & radius. Am I alone? I tried the sportbike method and it just felt wrong... |

Definitely more DB style here. I actually try and switch it up when I'm in the twisties. Some turns I will throw the leg out like a SM, and some I will lay it way over with a knee down but ever touching. For me, even at 6' tall, the bike is too tall to touch the knee down. The Uly to me is a 50/50 bike. |

It all changes when you hit the dirt , box out and adjust your riding dont miss the dirty roads some of the best twisties are covered in mud. |

IMHO if you employ dirt style while on the road and vise versa you could end up in an out of balance situation and eat some dirt or black top. In the dirt I ride like I'm on a dirt bike again. On the street I try not to ride like a squid and employ what little street skills I know |

I get a lil crotchy on the straights, but when the traffic bunches up I get pretty tardish for flickability. |

The Uly is a sportbike for big people. Plain and simple.

I'm big, but neither plain or simple. And there is more to the bike than that too. ;-P |

Chad, The Uly is best described as a touring supermotard IMHO. I am not big but I love this bike. I also like the fact that I can cruise down some dirt or gravel if I want to see what is at the end of it. The Uly is different things to different people. Personally, to limit the Uly to just sportbike riding is, well, limiting. It does OK on dirt roads and is great for eating the miles. Happy Trails, however you ride yours. |

Dave, I love your pictures! I have got to make it over there sometime. I'll tell you what...you come to Colorado and I'll get you a Uly to ride on some of our roads...then I'll head to Kiwi land and you get a Uly for me to ride on your roads! Deal? |

Good idea - not a lot of spare Ulys around here though - and you know I'd have to come for the ride! |

It's seldom the bike...it's the rider. This guy made it around the world......on and R1!

"It's seldom the bike...it's the rider." +1 - That was my first reaction at the start of the thread. |

That's what's important to the question. The Uly can comfortably be ridden on or off paved roads. It's more of a question of how and where the rider wants to ride rather than the bike. |

Around the world on an R1? Thats kind of impressive. Now lets see him do it on a shovelhead. Without legs. Then I'll really be impressed. The uly is a good dirt road bike, its not a dirt bike. I would say the same thing about an XR-650 and KLR-650 as well, except that I would have to add for those two bikes that ain't a great road bike either. The Uly is a fanatastic road bike that won't have to give up and go home if the "road" turns to dirt or gravel, or there is a curb or two that needs jumping... |

Now lets see him do it on a shovelhead. Without legs. Then I'll really be impressed. How about riding a Sportster across Siberia in the winter? Without legs. |

If you want to read more about fellow dutchman Sjaak Lucassen around the world on a R1: http://www.sjaaklucassen.nl/eng.html But ontopic: Hooliganstyle describes it best. |

WOW. I didn't think the question would generate so many responses! As I put more miles on the beast, I have encountered some sweepers where the sportbike style worked well. It didn't feel right at first, and still doesn't feel 100% natural yet. I guess it depends on a lot of factors as to what method I'll use. Oh yeah, did I mention that THIS BIKE ROCKS! |

That sibera trip was a testament to the Sporty motor... he abused that thing six ways to sunday, including a sidecar for a stretch *on* a frozen (but melting) river, and never really did have any engine problems besides the carb getting a little fussy running on 65 octane russian gas at -20 degrees F... Suspension issues? Thats a different topic :/ You know you are in trouble when you could put a sticker on your bike that says "Suspension by Ural". Russian motorcyclists... All HTFU vaccinations up to date... |

They Uly is a straight up hooligan dream bike. The harder you toss it around the better it performs. Eats tires like mad. |

I respectfully disagree I've been told by a very knowledgeable source that the root cause is biscuits -- not them fluffy ass rolls either, but southern style biscuits |

I cooked me some biscuits one time off the back of the Bisquick box. Wasn't aware that there were recipes for two distinctly different styles of biscuit. One kind you roll out on the counter. The other kind you don't. I started with the first type and ended up with the second without knowing it. Drop biscuits don't roll very well. (Message edited by ft_bstrd on May 04, 2008) |

Riding style varies with what I am riding on. Dirt roads; ride it like a big SM. Tight twisties; neutral to SM Sweepers; it is sports bike time, though I admittedly don't hang off the side all that much. Big +1 on the harder you ride it the better it works. There is one "road" that I occasionally play on close to home that consists primary of rocks and puddles. The best way I can describe my riding method on that section is like a 500 pound MTB |

I caught up to some squidly sport bikers in my local twisty haunt one day. With my race pipe they knew I was back there and the race was on! It was damn funny seeing them dragging knees while I was seated comfortably upright and staying right on their butts. The look on their faces when I passed them was priceless!!! Them all dressed in full race leathers and me with jeans and just a regular black leather jacket and helmet with all the bags on the bike too! Too funny but true! BC Steve |

Since I came from a motocross background I ride a uly like large Sm. Windrider described it best as a touring sm. |
