The Buell demo truck came to Marietta. I expected to like the motor and wish they would bring out an 1125S. I wasn't that impressed on our 10 mile demo ride through some twisty back roads. I was uncomfortable (just as I expected to be, I like higher bars). The motor did have more power on top, but I would have to be on a race track to make use of it. What surprised me was my second ride of the day. I rode an '08 XB12S. My current ride is an '06 XB12Ss. The handling was a little crisper than my bike, but not enough to make me want to buy a new bike. The '08 fuel injection on the other hand was fantastic. Smooth and buttery at all throttle position and all RPMs. I can't remember what my bike felt like before the race ECM and the K&N filter, so maybe that is the difference, but my bike is not near as smooth on the bottom end as the new one. On the 3rd demo ride of the day, I took my '06 Long and rode with the group. This was my most comfortable ride of the day, not surprisingly, but I did notice my bikes .....surginess? at lower RPMs. My short legs also like the slightly lower seat on the regular Lightning so I ordered the Ss touring seat when the day was over......but the "spot on" fuel injection of the '08 lump has me thinking of a trade. There's only two good reasons to stop buying motorcycles. 1. to buy something even more fun, such as a flying contraption, or jetski, or something. 2. to trade down to a wooden box. |

I was out at S&P on Friday and got to ride the 1125/Lightning long/Blast/XT and had the same thought too about the smoothness apparent in the 08 engines ...be it the fuel maps or engines (or both) who knows but I could certainly feel the diff with my 06Uly...perhaps that is the reason for the drop in mpg.... Yeah, what's the deal with the '08 FI? Is it just a different map, or does it have to do with those new cam sensors (it DOES have new cam sensors, right?)? That "surginess" it what's been driving me nuts on my '06 Ss. ~SM |

If I understand it correctly, the '08 injection monitors the O2 sensor all the time and updates things continuously. Our old ones just look at the O2 sensor when we are cruising along steady at 3000 to 3500 RPM for some period of time (10 minutes?). Anyway, I think it is a closed loop now instead of an open loop system like the old ones. I'm sure someone who knows more about it than me will speak up soon. |

Must Stop Buying Motorcycles! Sunny and I have only bought 3 in the past year. It is NOT an addiction, it's not, it's Not, it's NOT, it's NOT (Message edited by slaughter on May 09, 2008) |

Hey Swordsman When I rode the 08 Lighting Long and XT, I did intentionally try to hold the bikes at 3k and while diminished, there still was a little 'surging'. Still though, not noticeable enough to be bothersome unless the roads were amazingly flat and straight (neither of which we have in abundance in WV). Slaughter....not an addiction...a COLLECTION! |

I think what you meant was: Must stop. Buying motorcycles. Right? |

No cam sensor on the 08s. Crank pickup on the left front of the XB motor (looks like a speed sensor in the wrong place) times the ignition; cam pickups are totally gone. Haven't put my hands on the one on the Helicon yet, but AFAIK same software/different mapping. Crank timed, not cam timed. |
