Just hit 1K on my 06 Uly and I want to do one oil change with regular oil before switching to syn. Advance Auto has Valvoline 20w50 "motorcycle" oil on sale. Is this safe to use?

Does it meet the API "C" guidelines as described in the manual? Look for the "starburst" on the package.

Instead of asking the oil-rumor club, first want to check with Valvoline -- vendors typically respond quickly to consumer questions. They want to keep you as a repeat customer so they'll want to get you their best oil for your application.

But it will likely work just fine.

Also check the Amsoil site and have a read of the 'White Paper'.

Is it full synthetic? I think that is more important then if it has "motorcycle" on the label.

Here's Valvoline's email response...
"Thank you for your question. Yes, this oil is acceptable for use in HD/Buell as
well as other motor cycles. If you have any further questions you may contact us
at 1.800.832.6825."

This is not synthetic, just plain old mineral.

Amsoil is synthetic.

The oil to use is MCV by Amsoil.

Have a read and then make your decision.

I agree with Bill that synthetic oil is the way to go.
I use Valvolene synthetic 20W50, works very well for me.

Interesting read. When you look at all the testing/data it's hard to justify NOT using Amsoil or one of the other top oils.

brakes2Late... if you can find any full synthetic 20w50 (including something from WalMart) that has credible lab data showing significant breakdown in 3500 miles in any street vehicle application, I would love to know about it.

I haven't found a full synthetic yet (premium or off brand) that won't go 3500 miles.

Wish the wal-mart stuff came in 20w50. I wonder how the Rotella 10w40 would work? Probably a bit on the thin side...

Ok, so if any synthetic will do, how about the tranny? I've heard Mobile 1 for both from a number of people. I guess my goal is not so much to find the perfect oil but to make sure I don't put something in the bike that will screw it up!

Many miles have been put on Buells with Mobil 1 15w50 in the primary, and I don't recall hearing any problems of any kind.

Mobil 1 works fine.

I like Formula+ for the primary.

Also Amsoil MCV is good for the primary and the engine.

Thanks. KawaSuki dealer down the street carries 10w40 and 20w50 Amsoil syn. I'll think I'll go with the 20w50 for the summer.

Ok, so I decided to try the Amsoil MCV but the dealer I called that said he had it only had the 10w40. So I headed over to my nearest Auotzone and picked up Mobile 1 Extended Life 15w50 ($6.29/qt). I put it in the tranny yesterday. I'm planning on putting it in the engine next weekend when I put on my Jardine pipe since I have to disconnect the oil lines anyway. I hope the bike shifts a little easier with the Mobile 1. This things got the clunkiest tranny I've ever had. My wife's 03 XB9 shifts like butter compared to my Uly.
