This just in from Buell Motor Company;

Buell Motorcycle Company has implemented an updated Electronic Control Module (ECM) calibration. The updated calibration provides improved cold and hot restart functionality and improved throttle response. The updated calibration also provides optimized electrical system draw and electrical accessory operation.

Motorcycles Affected
This Product Program applies to all 2008 Buell 1125R models built prior to April 04, 2008.

More specific details to follow as time permits to type this out (PDF version not online yet).

Hey Neil,

Hasn't been posted as of yet, but we got our mailed copies today. It is Buell Service Bulletin B-071, Product Program 0502. I'll post some of the particulars here in a moment.

Shouldn't take too long, Bjorn. It's a simple re-flash.

Does the ECM need to be sent to BMC?

Here's some info related to what this calibration update;

System functions updated with new calibration;

Accessory port is controlled by the ECM and will turned off if the ECM reports a deficit on the charging system. Do not install accessories directly to the battery or anywhere else on the bike except the accessory plug.

ECM will now control cooling fan operation independently and is regulated by coolant temperature and battery voltage.

Idle RPM is now impacted by inputs from coolant temperature and battery voltage. This may raise the RPM slightly if the programmed conditions are met. Under normal operation the idle will remain at 1250 RPM.

Idle Air Control function has been changed to improve tip-in throttle response and low speed driving.

Low Battery Voltage Lamp will now come on at 11.9 volts instead of 11.5 volts to provide improved maintenance notification.

It is normal for the fuel pump to cycle periodically to maintain fuel pressure after key off. The amount of time allowed for this has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes maximum.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I'll keep an eye on my spam folder to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

The ECM can be re-flashed at any Buell dealer. It is free and should be a no-hastle situation.

Odin..
I would think there is a different re-flash version for California. Do you happen to know if the CA flash is ready to be served up as well?

Thx, as always a day too late I was at my Dealer yesterday for them to see if I had any codes. No codes but, the service writer did get flagged about the SB B-071 and the 0502.

And to think I could have had it done then, if they had the s-ware update. In a few days I'll wander back over there and plug in and get flashed.

Cool! Sounds like there were a lot of potential factors at play, and its amazing how many of them your can work around with clever use of rich ECM functionality...

Pardon me while I go reboot my motorcycle : )

For anyone that wants to clarify with their servicing dealer, here's the breakdown of the calibration numbers;

1125R alibration Table

We just received an update through our Digital Tech, so I'm guessing all dealers have these updates pushed through to their machines. They just need to click on "Install Update" and that should be it.

Actually, that chart is a screenshot of a table I created in Word, but couldn't get the HTML code to work to make a table in the post. The actual table came from the Service Bulletin, which should be posted online to H-D/Buell dealers in the near future in PDF format.

Dealers can poll the ECM to see what calibration is loaded, and from there they can update to the newer version. Reporting functions on the reflash provide the customers with a groovy little printout. We try to do that here at Liberty with each reflash, but it varies from dealer to dealer.

Isn't it though? I bet the ECM on the Buell has more computing power that the computer in the Apollo system. And distributing program changes on the intranet. Awesome, if you ask me.

Totally Amazing Stuff!!!!!!!!!

All right I'll be nice. It is pretty cool that such technical data and information can be spread AROUND the world (if required) literally at the speed of light!

What's even more amazing to me is how the word of mouth can travel faster ;+}

I'm outta here..........

Likely MUCH more.

I remember being told numerous times that a cell phone had more computing power than the space shuttle, and that was YEARS ago.

I believe that a NASA engineer that was interviewed regarding the Apollo missions equated the computing power of the CM to a modern scientific calculator. Can't remember exactly though, but it was LOW!

The processing power is amazing.

In my eyes, Buell is more so.

Engineers have been, since the first media bike rolled at Laguna Seca, have been collecting, collating and analyzing data.

There were simultaneous and sometimes competing pressures to both work accurately and filter out "noise" data. Think of it as improving what the Buell 1125R ECM does, not making the ECM capable of warding off an assault of outside help.

Software programs (Buell had a vendor for the first system in 1999) are painfully slow.

Some here, in the bowels of the software industry, know the process and what the development decision tree looks like. A year turn around can be said to be blazing fast.

It seems like only yesterday folks were bereft about not being able to get an 1125R while some dealer unloaded 10 in a single day.

The idea that this flash comes less than 14 days following the Aussie (and New Zealish) launch is (at least to me) a fine example of how Buell accomplishes things.

Many will disagree.

But I, after a career of managing projects, stand in amazement.

Court

P.S. - Is udder amazement when you can't believe how fast the cows make milk?
