So I've had a 2000 X1 for about a year now. Recently I Started hearing a clanking noise on deceleration at around 2600 rpm. It started off very occasionaly and has graduated to all the time at 2400 to 3000 rpm. I have checked the primary chain... ok. Has new stock lifters and adj. pushrods. And there is no sign of contact in the rocker boxes. Please HELP! Any Ideas? |

Just a guess, I noticed you have a Supertrapp in your profile. Still have it? Check to see if the plates have loosened up. Or just give those plate bolts a crank or two. |

Does it clank when you transition to decel (i.e. right when you close the throttle)? If so, the noise is probably coming when the engine shifts. Check your engine mounts, especially the front of the front head right behind the steering neck. |

If the noise goes away when accelerating and comes back on decel, I'd check the torque on the front drive sprocket nut in the primary. My 98 S3 had that nut come loose and the symptoms sounded like yours. All it took to resolve it was to verify that it was loose and torque to proper spec. |

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. Just a guess, I noticed you have a Supertrapp in your profile. Still have it? Check to see if the plates have loosened up. Or just give those plate bolts a crank or two. It is definately in the motor, almost sounds like striking an anvil 6 times a second. I also checked the head bolts and motor mounts on the pushrod install 2 days ago. I replaced the clutch plates maybe 2 months ago. The engine sprocket nut was torqued to 210 ft lbs with about a 1/2 pint of red locktite on it (not really that much, but a lot). I'm fairly confident its not that, but the primary chain may need to be replaced. Any other Ideas? Has anyone had a problem with piston slap or rod bearings going out in 16000 miles? Thanks again for any suggestions. |

Are you still running the original wussy primary shoe? Perhaps it broke. If so, don't ride it until you take out the fragments! |

A loose crank nut had almost a "ring" to it (I guess they don't call it a stator bell for nothing ). It would ring at idle, and go away if you loaded up the clutch at all. The torque spec for that nut was wrong, so even if you did everything by the book, it could come loose. |

my clank never went away on the S3, tried all the usual suspects. finally decided to do a full teardown...both pistons had significant evidence of slap, and there is a fair amount of slop in one of the rod/crank connections. at about 32k miles. i bought a new crank assy that will require some machining on my case and a 1250 kit to slap on it...i haven't installed any of it yet, 4 years later!!!! but i will....someday. |

I forgot to say earlier that the updated shoe is in it as well. Now I'm thinking that I will just ride the damn thing. When or if it pops, I'll just pull the motor and send it to my buddy Ron at Southern Motorcycle in Houston. Have him go through the whole thing, maybe go to 88" and headwork too......... |

Along with the 88" don't forget the 08 crank. I wish it had been out when I did mine. Joe |

What Sparky said! Retorque your front primary drive sprocket nut. You'll need to remove it, clean the threads on nut and shaft, apply red loctite, and retorque. |

one of 2 things the crank nut, or the trans drive sprocket nut |

Here's an update for you guys. I rode about 50 miles yesterday trying to get something out of it. Now it makes the noise throughout the rpm rang up to 4000 and also at idle now. ARGRAHHH this is so fustrating. |

Does it do it in neutral? Can you feel it in the bars? |

If it sounds like someone hitting an anvil 6 times a second and has progressively gotten worse as you describe. It sounds like big and or small end rod bearings are gone. The noise you are hearing is actually the piston contacting the head due to the increased clearance. The prudent thing to do would be to stop running it before something exits the motor under its own power. Could be something else of course ,but from your description, I've seen this before. |

Take off your oil filter, open it up, and cut the paper off and look at it. If you are having an internal failure, the evidence should be there..... |

i'm almost certain its the crank nut |

It does make the noise regardless of what gear, neutral or not. And no, not in the bars. I think Langperf is on to something, it would make sense that I couldn't locate the noise to one place if both pistons are beating the heads up due to a big end rod bearing failure. Or not, 'cause that would make more noise right? I'm gonna check the cranknut one more time, and I'm gonna butcher the filter. Thanks guys, I'll be back to let you know what I find. |

Wonderful......... I took off the oil filter to see if there were any particles... ha! It looked like glitter pouring out of it. At least I know what I have to do now. And I've got a little over $3000 to spend. Any suggestions? |

Hey, if you were thinking of sending the engine to your bud and possibly hopping it up, this is your engine's way of saying Let's do it. Sorry for the perverse humor, but we gotta stay upbeat, ya know. Add this to your to-do list: updated bronze oil pump drive gear. |

did you check it with a magnet to see if it was aluminum or not? |

Add this to your to-do list: updated bronze oil pump drive gear. A must indeed. }did you check it with a magnet to see if it was aluminum or not? Lots of brass in the oil. Steel too, enough stuck to the magnet to cover a folded napkin in silver in two nice steaks. |
