While searching the archives, I came across extensive info about chafing on the main wire harness, idle cables (I'm not sure what an idle cable is?) and plug wires. As usual, Treadmarks posted some very compressive information about the specific issues and ways to correct them. These posts are almost two years old now and I'm assuming most of the affected bikes (at the time of the thread) were '06 models. Does anyone know if this is still an issue on the more recent bikes (mine is an '08)? If I didn't live in an apartment, I'd head out to the garage right now and inspect it all. Also, I'm starting to collect parts for some farkling that'll I do in a few weeks. I'm going to install an auxiliary fuse block under the seat, upgrade the low beam with an HID as well as add some Piaa 510's (among other things). I want to dress the wires as neatly as I can. Does anyone know where I can get some of the mesh type wire loom that is used on the factory harness? Thanks! Tipsy |

I think they fixed it on post-06 bikes. Idle cable is the "other" throttle cable - the one that pulls the throttle shut. You can try speedshops or custom truck shops for the wire loom, they may have it. Wallyworld only has the plastic convolute-tubing stuff |

The idle cable is an adjusting screw for the idle. It runs from the injection body to the left front air scoop. It is a steel cable that bends 90 degrees around a corner to do so. The issue with that was the spark plug wire for the front cylinder would lay across it and vibration would allow the steel cable to cut through the soft plug wire. Another place they rub through is where the loom crosses over the breather hose on the front cylinder(under the airbox base). Also the seat can push down on the wires coming out of the ECM wearing them through. And the bundle that goes from under the tank on the left side to the steering head loom can get pulled too tight stretching some soldered joints to breaking. I went over these areas and put a plastic automotive type conduit over them. I had to re-solder a joint in the steering head bundle and pulled the whole harness back towards the frame to loosen it up some. Buell made seat spacer blocks to support the seat from hitting the ECM plug. |

The idle cable is an adjusting screw for the idle. It runs from the injection body to the left front air scoop. I believe this is gone on the 08 models. |
