Right, sensor is on top of the engine case. That install looks like a fairly major PITA. You could probably go to Target or Wal-Mart and get any "car charger" for a cell phone that puts out anything between 5 and 10 volts, and wire that in pretty painlessly (with enough tape and other goop to weatherproof). |

I replaced the sensor yesterday and sure enough, my speedometer now works. Thanks |

Gonna try this new filing system. If the speedo quits working, shouldn't the low fuel light still work? Speedo quit working couple days ago. Tach and tripometers still working and backlighting is fine. 03 XB9S |

Do I have this right- There is: (1)a new part with built-in regulation or maybe a chip with high enough voltage rating (2) build my own regulator, a la Reepicheep (3) rewire the power source for the sensor to a regulated source, as per the instructions above. Since my sensor is still working OK, I'd rather just add regulation. Seems like rewiring is the easiest unless I need resistor wire (unknown resistance), etc. Anybody do this mod? Does it hold up? |

Hi folks! Is anyone still actively working on low cost speed sensor alternatives? I need to replace mine. |

Somebody successfully (I believe) did it with the old assembly, epoxy, and a hall effect switch from Newark. It was a lot of work though. The regulator is easy though, just build one from the schematic, or use an old cell phone car charger that puts out 5 to 10 volts regulated. Or tap into the ECM 5v regulated supply (if your bike has one). |
