Last summer I bent the shift level bolt when I washed out on wet grass on our back yard (reference Figure 2-119 Service Manual). That bolt snapped, about 2.5 inches from the head, on the way home from work tonight. Do I need to pull the chain case cover to remove the remainder of the bolt? Is there a good source for replacement bolts? I'm not sure the dealerships will have this in stock, but I will check tomorrow during operating hours. Thanks for your help (in advance)! Boiler | ||

You are gonna have to be more specific.. Figure 2-119 in my S/M, is about belt deflection.... Or, snap a pic, or find a pic, and post it, with the area in question circled... Thanks, Chase | ||

OK, I was looking at a 2001 S/M, Page 2-74. Here is a pic from an M3 but the basic shifter is the same.  I am talking about the bolt that part #3 (shift level) pivots on. It is a 5/16-18 hex bolt. I assume it is a grade 5 or better bolt. The bolt is broken just inside the hole in the chain case cover. Too deep for an easy-out to reach. I am assuming the chain case cover must be removed. The real question is a quick source for this bolt once I remove the damaged bolt. Thanks | ||

I am sure Al can set you up with the bolt if Buell can't. As for getting the broken one out, maybe try ez-out or the like? | ||

pull the primary off remove the broken your dealer should stock it if not call asb you will get it sooner trust me. | ||

yeah, you can get a replacement from HD... I dont have the P/N handy though. I will look in my bin of loose stuff.. and see if I still have mine... BUT, if its broken.. you should still be able to work it out, unless the threads are boogered up.... But, it is just regular bolt.. grade 5 or higher should be sufficient. Go Stainless steel, as with the aluminum, there could be corrosion issues otherwise... Chase | ||

I was just at Harley looking for the same bolt. They want $17 for it! It is a 5/16-18 x 4 3/4". Hope that helps. Just go to your local hardware store. I just bought the shifter without the bolt so I also need the bushings. Anyone have the bolt with bushings laying around from a project? | ||

Thanks for the help everyone! My local dealer did not have it in stock but was only asking $10.50 for it. Chase, I'm fairly confident that the threads are OK so hopefully all I have to do is remove the primary cover and extract what remains of the bolt and go from there. We have a weekend forecast of rain so I don't as bad now, but it was quite a let down to have to drive the car in to work yesterday. On the bright side one of my coworkers just earned his MC endorsement and we plan to do some shopping after work tonight. His short list is down to two choices, and Buell is on the top.
