I'm thinking I want the Drummer! I'm a little confused about the changes to the computer on the '08 Uly though and how that relates to the exhaust modification. Yesterday, Anthony at Liberty Buell mentioned something about a computer program...I think he called it Direct Link (he wasn't talking about ECMSpy)...and said I could bolt on the Drummer and simply have them (Liberty) tweak the computer using their system. On the other hand, I keep reading about a race ECM. Is this something I'd need if I use the Drummer? Is the race ECM even compatible with the '08 Uly? I'm not looking for crazy power gains (at least not at the moment). I just want the bike to continue to run properly if I install the Drummer. Speaking of which, does anyone have a stock XB muffler in good shape they'd be interested in parting with? I think I'd like to keep my stock can just in case I decide to the Drummer is too loud for touring. Thanks. Tipsy |

Al is still working on getting DirectLink to work on '08s. There is no race ECM for an '08. Sorry... |

Al is still working on getting DirectLink to work on '08s. So Liberty is mistaken in their assertion that Direck Link can be used to adjust the settings on the '08? Is ECMSpy compatible with the '08? I'm assuming both programs accomplish the same thing? Tipsy |

I don't know on ECMspy...the software for the '08s is totally different from previous software (the change to crank trigger; auto-TPS reset, auto-idle-speed set, increased rev limit, different fan temp settings, etc)so I'm guessing we're going to experience a time lag until we can re-map stuff. Liberty, from what I've heard, is usually right on top of stuff. Maybe they know something I don't...or they misunderstood your model year? |

We were discussing the '08 for quite a while, so I'm pretty sure he understood what I was asking. I'll email Liberty if I decide to get the Drummer and confirm they can make the necessary adjustments. Thanks! Tipsy |

You are fine just putting a Drummer on with no ECM mods. I've had K&N filter and "drummer" (actually a tubbs, which is similar thing in the UK) for 4,000 miles. Now running a full micron setup though, still with no ECM work. |

I'm in the tuning biz for Victory's - I had a nice chat with Kevin Drummer and understand what he has done with his pipe. There is a saying in the tuning world - "it's all in the pipes". A motor sucks-bangs-blows. It is my understanding that the 08 ecm is fairly well done in that it makes power and it will meet emissions. I think it needs more bottom end gas. However, according to Drummer, the same net effect has been achieved by tuning the pipe. This is a good thing. I have a very fast chip for the Vic's. Bad scavenging pipes have to have their TPS set rich. Good scavenging pipes can have their TPS set leaner. Here's another saying - "Lean is mean but big V twins like big gasoline". Our Uly's need to achieve a better balance of power. I know there is a little more power lurking down low. I can feed it more air and gas - better suck- to get a bigger bang - but it all goes to pieces if it just won't blow out correctly. I have a stainless Drummer on order - Lets see what happens. |

As of right now, DirectLink, to my knowledge, is NOT compatible with DDFI III. Techno Research is working on a software release to work with these systems. We'll keep everyone informed. Chris |

And yes, you would need to remap your bike for any exhaust or intake changes. Chris

And yes, you would need to remap your bike for any exhaust or intake changes. So has anyone here installed a Drummer on an '08 w/o a remap? What were the results? I emailed Kevin at Drummer directly and he indicated the '08 ECM would be okay as-is with the addition of his muffler. Tipsy |

Rubbish. They are not that sensitive, period. Ask any decent tuner. If one person would know is Mr Drummer as per above post. |

Remap is NOT needed, but RECOMMENDED! Bike will run fine, but if it is anything like the pre-08's it will pop a lot on decel. |

ECMSPY IS COMPATIABLE WITH THE '08 ULYS! I'VE SUCCESFULLY TUNED MINE ON WINDOWS VISTA. I BOUGHT THE '08 RACE ECM FROM XOPTI FROM BUELLETINBOARD.COM FOR $100. Drop him a line. The map is for a Drummer & K&N. I have a Special Ops Pipe & K&N Air Filter. He sent me the .txt file, i tweaked it a few times and got my AFV @ 99.7% and pulls like a raped ape! If ECMSpy allows you to change and customize all of the parameters of the ECM, and the Race ECM is a factory "optimized" ECM, why would you need to buy the Race ECM if you're using ECMSpy? Couldn't you effectively "create" a race ECM...or anything you want for that matter, using ECMSpy? Tipsy |

There is no '08 factory Race ECM available. Xopti created his own by using a rear cylinder O2 sensor and running on the dyno and HE did all the tweaking and modifications. He has over 20+ years tweaking ECMs. I have about 20+ hours...not even. So i leave it to the experts. Plus he provides the EEPROM txt file and then I adjust the Open Loop Correction and WOT correction (both %) only two values that I can easily change back and forth and optimize my ride. I'm at 99.7% AFV%, but want 100%, so i can tweak and fiddle until i find the right mix for my riding style and still stay around 100%. Well worth the $$$. I'll pay $100 for his equipment and knowledge over me trying to "tune" my own ECM without having any previous experience. But, yes, you are right. Someone with ECM experience and access to a rear cylinder O2 sensor and a dyno could do this themselves. The dealer would charge well over $100 and correspondence with Xopti via email was easy as can be. Let me know if you want any more info for the '08 owners. Xopti also offers a $50 version without the rear cylinder O2 sensor and custom map to allow users to tweak and "try" to find the best mix. So far I am overly happy with the results of the full "'08 Xopti Race ECM" that I can manipulate with only two values: OLC & WOT via ECMSPY. Think Summer...Ian |

Thanks for the info Ian. Up until a few days ago, I had never heard of (or paid attention to) ECMSpy, Direct Link, MegaLogViewer, etc. Until two hours ago, I had no idea what AFV is (and I still don't really understand what it is). I don't doubt that Xopti knows his stuff and I'd have no problem paying for his expertise. I was just initially a bit confused by your post. I thought you were implying that you removed a stock ECM, bought a Race ECM and then manipulated the Race ECM with ECMSpy. I figured you could have just adjusted the stock ECM from the get-go to achieve the desired result, but I understand what your saying now. Insofar as with or without rear cylinder O2, that's still above my comprehension level. I'm going to spend a few weeks or months getting up to speed on all of this techno stuff before I decide in which direction to head. So far, the only think I know for sure is that I want a Drummer simply because the sound reminds me of my old Sportster Tipsy |
