Hello all! So a while back I traded loneXB a tail light for is 2004 sprockets/pulley from his Firebolt. I ordered a new 04+ belt and yesterday I installed it all. I get everything swapped and my belt is tight!! really tight, like it took me and a buddy about 45 minutes to pry it on there. (but tried my best not to bend or damage it) it really seemed like it was too small!! we finally get it on there and go for a test ride, she now makes a loud whining noise from the primary / pulley area at about 2k rpms in first and constant on the highway. but to hear on the highway I have to duck my head down to the right. (really sounds like the 1125R on decel!!!) but I also have no primary cover on it just yet, so not sure if it always made that noise and since the cover is off i can hear it or ???? Now the big kicker is going forward the belt spins fine, but I push my bike back about 3 feet and the belt creeps over on the pulley and if I go a few more feet it would pop off completely, but forwards its just fine........ I have no clue why it would creep off when backing up as well as I have no clue whats causing the noise?? any experience out there????? The bike has never been down and had no issues with any of this before doing the belt upgrade. (front and rear sprocket, idler pulley and belt) Thank You!!!!!!!!! -Robert Hall xblights@yahoo.com |

Belt creep in reverse is normal, very normal. The amount you are talking about isn't. Tight when new is also normal. It takes a few hundred miles for the belt to stretch and seat itself. The sound you hear just might be because you don't have the cover on. Check the sides of the belt for unusual wear, like shiny or frayed spots. Also check the rear pulley for shiny spots. Might be a defective belt. I have had 2 defective belts in a row. |

Yes, the reverse-creep is normal, it's caused by the way the cords are wound. Next time, don't pry your belt on. Loosen the rear axle pinch bolt, and unscrew the rear axle about 18 turns. |

And the primary would be on the left side. The belt is the secondary drive. |

Did you change the idler pulley arm? they are different angles from 03 to 04. |

FWIW, my new belt which I installed a few weeks back, took a good 500 miles to stretch. It was also really tight, but yours sounds tighter. Are either of your sprockets damaged in anyway? Did you powdercoat either pulley? |

Hmmm guys. yall bring good stuff to the table. I did not change the tensioner arm, I was told it would work the same, but maybe I should! I bet thats why it was so tight! I tried everything one could to get that belt on there! with the axle loose so the wheel was a bit forward there was no way I could pull it back to get the big socket end of the axle to fit in the swingarm (even with a 3 foot extension bar in the axle and my and my buddy pulling like hell. only way that worked was to tighten the axle and spin the wheel and force the belt to ride the sprocket around and at the same time keep tapping the belt at the tensioner to keep it from popping off. And even this was very difficult! it did NOT want to fit. I consider myself pretty hands on and know my way around with tools, so I know something has to be wrong here ?? This reverse belt creep can NOT be normal If I go more then 8 feet the belt WILL pop off. Looks like I need to look into a new tensioner arm. I gave the belt a good look over and it seems fine, besides trying to stretch the belt I took good care in making sure it wasnt getting jacked while installing. nothing has been powdercoated and sprockets looked good. Thank You all!!! -Robert |

The tensioner arm IS different and Must be changed, as well, on an '03 during the '04 conversion. |

Reverse belt creep is normal. The lip on the front sprocket will keep the belt from coming completely off. |

I take it when you installed the belt you had the idler pulley removed? You need to loosen the rear axle and then remove the idler pulley to remove or refit the belt. Refit the idler pulley and then tighten the axle. Norrie. |

I did not have the pulley removed. I ordered a bracket off of an 05 so that should be in soon (as well as the front sprocket cover) and I will install as you guys mentioned above and see how it goes. But I do think the edge on the front sprocket is on the inside and the outside is open, so it can slid off the outside when backing up. At about 7 to 9 feet im 100% positive that belt would come off. I'll get that new bracket installed and go from there. Thanks guys!!! -Robert |

Hi Robert, On the front sprocket, the edge is outside, the inside is open. The noise is coming from the belt. It is rubbing on the edge ( I had this on my bike when I changed the belt ) PS : I am still very happy with your light, very good job ! |

Did you remove the inner belt cover? You need to remove this. i.e. The metal one. Norrie. |

Uh-Oh! if the edge is on the inside, then I must have done it backwards! Man, what an idiot! I build my lights better then this, I promise! and Thanks Jpxb9! Glad you like it! Did you get my last email I sent you about 2 weeks back? oh and yes the metal covering is gone. I'm going to look it over tonight when I get home! thanks guys! |

Alright, so I looked at her last night. the front sprocket is on correctly! (it only fits one way) I'll get that new bracket on there as soon as it comes in and see what happens. I think that will fix her. Also ordered some new bearings for the idler pulley just to make sure she is fresh and good to go! Thanks guys!!!! -Robert |

Rob, I very much fear that your method of mounting the belt using the wrong procedure and the wrong parts may have caused serious damage to the belt itself--you won't see it visually--and more unhappily to the wheel bearings and transmission output shaft bearings. Hopefully not. |

Did you remove the inner belt cover? You need to remove this. i.e. The metal one. I kept mine and just bent the metal corners away from the pulley. This allows you to keep the rubber skirt that rides on top of the belt to keep crap out of the front pulley area. |

Did you remove the inner belt cover? I used a drill and a Dremmel tool to cut down the sprocket side of the belt guard by about half an inch so it would clear the larger diameter front sprocket. IIRC it took less than 20 minutes. :I thought it came out rather nicely too. |

Someone commented to me the other day that my belt seemed tight, I had the tyre changed recently and he had no trouble(I watched him) but is it possible to wind your spindle in so much that your belt ends up too tight.I'm not getting any noise or any problems and the guy who mentioned it was a Jap bike rider. |

Assuming your referring to the axle as the spindle (i'm not sure the Buell official word for it ) But it is supposed to be torqued down to a certain LBS. can't remember what it is, like 75 LBS or so. but in all honesty I do not think you can tighten it down enough to make it tighter. For the hassles, tell the jap guy one of his decals in on upside down |

It is a tapered axle to give slack to the belt. However it must be allt the way in to have the bearings ride in it properly. I think the torques specs is to not drive it through the threads in the swing arm. Nevertheless, did you end up getting the wrrrring sound fixed?? Mine is doing the same thing but it is in the primary/tranny from what I cant tell. Also mine is a 05 so I dont "atleast think" I have the the same bely guard issues you have with the 04. |

Well, I finally got my 04+ idler bracket in today, there is a difference! Mounted my new tires and installed new wheel bearings today at work, but I have a couple light orders I need to be working on, so the bike will have to wait. But it will be done by this weekend so I can get my arse back on the road! also replacing clutch cable and brakes and bleeding them, oh and finally putting my non-burnt headlight in (thanks Treadmarks!) We will see within the next few days if the noise is still there or not. but after seeing how tight that belt was, i bet its good to go now! |
