I have a 96 S1. Mint bike, 2500 original miles on her. Batter was original too. Never had any problems with her. Well last year at the end of the riding season I bought a race module off of ebay as well as a Screamin eagle coil and SE plug wires. I installed that stuff and maybe put a 100 miles on her before she went into hibernation. I pulled her out last week for the first seasons ride. As I'm using my directionals I notice they're not blinking as fast as they normally would. I pull in the driveway, turn her off, go inside to grab a sweatshirt, come back out and get the dreadfull tick, tick, tick. I charge the battery overnight and the next morning she fires right back up. Go for a ride and notice the same issues. Turn her off, restart, tick, tick, tick So I ran out and bought a new battery, seeing how its only 12 years old. Charge it up, go for a ride, come back, tick, tick, tick I've been reading in the manual about checking the battery, voltage regulator and stator. I'll perform some tests this afternoon. Funny thing is I never had any problems until I put in that race module, coil and wires. I am terrible with electrical, so question... Is it possible that module could effect the charging system? Everything on the bike is absolutely brand new looking. I'm having a hard time believing the VR or stator has gone bad on such a low miled buell. Please, someone help me out here. Its 75* out today, I see all these bikes riding around and I'm just sittin out there staring at mine |

Check the obvious stuff like grounds and such, but it sounds like it is just coincidence. Hopefully your tests show something obvious. |

Erick Love the yellow S1. The ECM does not control the Voltage regulator. All you will need is a multi meter to checkout your system. As a you have surmised this sounds like a charging system failure. Read the voltage at your battery with the bike off, record the voltage some think higher than 12.3VDC. Start the bike let it run for 30sec to a minute, check the voltage I would expect something in the 13.0VDC range. Rev the motor to 3000RPM check the voltage would expect 13.5VDC. If not the very first thing that I would check is the voltage regulator AC connector. It's a round two pin connector in the area of the oil pump. Cut the tie rap off and inspect the wire for abrasion from the tie rap, this is where mine had cut through the wire. If not the problem check for 36+ VAC from the stator side of the connector with the bike running. The service manual has an excellent troubleshooting procedure for this subsystem. If you don't have one I strongly recommend you do. But the manual section her at BadWeb has your S1 manual in PDF. Good luck. Joe |
