i got the buell back on the road a couple days ago and rode to work yesterday and today. 42 miles each way.. about half way to work this morning the engine started missing between 1000-2500 rpm,, once you are above 2500 she smooths out.. it acted as if one of the cylinders was only firing part of the time? but when she reached 2500-3000 it ran nice and smooth.. it is running a single fire ignition,, any ideas??? at work now so i havent been able to look her over yet but.. just trying to get some quick places to look before heading home... thanks guys,, aaron |

do i smell bad???? no ideas,,, she ran the same way all the way home.. it starts and idles fine,, you start to give it gas and let out the clutch and it is like one cylinder dies and she looses power. then an inter mitten fire here and there until 2500-3000rpm after that she smooths out and runs fine.. played with pulling the enricher lever in and out and it really didnt change any. as i started out from every stop some would be worse than others but it would always react about the same.. i am drawing a blank and would appreciate any input.. at this point i am not sure where to start looking.. unless i come up with another direction i may pull my programmable module, jumper the coil, and put back in the stock one and see what effect it has.. any ideas?????? |

I had experience with a single fire setup that was improperly installed on a sporty I bought for my wife. The pin was set to a shovelhead setting on the unit and after the pin was set to where it needed to be it ran much much better. Too bad it took me months to figure it out. It was a '94 (EVO) TT |

thanks tictoc,, it has run for years with this ignition. it is a thunder heart performance,, b2 smartfire system.. no switches,, you plug it into a lap top and program pretty much anything you want in there,, kinda scary just how much stuff they will let you adjust.. thing is i have not adjusted it for a long time.. my brain is fried right now and i can not find a logical path for what is happening.. ugh,, time to go relax,, thanks again for postin tictoc, was feelin alone in this battle.. |

thats a good lookin bike you have there..i see that you have a bunch of mods and thats a good thing...however, sometimes it makes diagnosis more difficult... |

Well... its pretty simple... You need Air, fuel, and spark, to have combustion in a gas engine... Well, you would know if the valves or valvetrain was bad.. it wouldnt smooth out... You can also just about rule out air/fuel in the carb... That leaves you with ignition. First thing to do... Get it running, replicate the mis.... Pull one plug wire... You have a 50/50 chance.... If it doesnt get worse, or stall.. its the other cylinder(do it as well to verify)... SO, at that point, you can start with the obvious, condition of the wires, and pull the plugs... look at your plugs, see what they look like... You can also test the primary and secondary windings on the coil, in particular the terminal thats on the bad cylinder. I am thinking your prob is in that area... OR, the gap in your plug is off(weaker spark at lower RPM),..... Chase |

what you explained happened to me once, it turned out to be that my front cylinder's plug wire was a little loose at the coil, i pulled it off spread some electrical connection grease, (dielectric) and replaced it and it worked perfectly. good luck |

good calls guys,, had kinda forgotten, but the stock system used to give the same sort of symptoms when i washed it,, small amount of water , coil, wire issue. it hasent been wet or washed around the time of the current issue. and all the old components that were doing that before have all been upgraded. but that still gives ideas and direction.. thanks again guys for all you input, aaron |

I had exactly the same symptoms last year-- I feared the worst and suspected one of the FI sensors -- started with the simple stuff -- because I ARE simple -- checked my plugs and noticed one of the nuts that screws onto the top of the plug was very loose tightened it with a pair of pliers rather than hand tight -- that plug was in a little worse shape than the other so I cleaned 'em both -- put 'em back in and it's run fine ever since --bad contact is all it was -- Bneck |

Is this on an S-2, as this can be a symptom of your circuit breaker going bad , runs like a single cylinder. Mine has done it at least twice. Cheap fix at any auto parts store. My tach would drop 1/2 when it was doing it. If not I would suspect wires/coil. |

I usually squirt a little water on the headers to see which is dead, as pulling plug wires can, theoretically, damage components, and realistically, shock you (Zap!) The water will immediately cook off of the good cylinder, and hang around for a bit on the dead/weak one. Plus, I'm not touching a hot motor. Both work, just my take. |

i didnt have a chance to play with the bike today,, it was shopping in buffalo day,, the good part is stopping by the harley buell dealer up there for a test ride and free hydro pack!!! other than that it was pretty much shopping for summer clothes for the girls and baby stuff..... brokeneck, yeah i have seen the ends unscrew before.. these i had unscrewed and slightly crushed and then re installed. that way the tread is pretty much locked. at work i pulled both ends of the plug wires and looked.. both ends looked ok.. that doesnt mean anything but the little screw on end caps were still tight.. fireman,,, good to here from you.. circuit breaker??? hmmmm..i had not thought of that one.. will be sure to add that to the list of places to look.. jos51700 i have been wanting to buy a digital laser thermometer just for such occasions... bad cylinders,, checking wheel bearings... checking kids temps.. the gas grill,, all the usual stuff.. think that tomorrow i will start simple and check the shelves for the stock plug wires and slap them on and go from there.. |

If it has the unscrewable plug tops, they're not HD plugs, and I've had lots of trouble with non-HD plugs. Maybe, since they're cheap, new plugs would be a good place to start? That way you KNOW they're good? |

they are buell pro series,, plugs,, have buell written across the ceramic insulator.. they look like split fire plugs with platinum firing surfaces on all three surfaces.. |

ok,, played all day ,, plugs were fine,, wires were good,, couldnt replace circuit breakers so i moved them around,, no change replaced module and coil.. that seemed to fix it plugged the thunderheart in and set it to dual fire with stock coil.. seem to work so now i am guessing it is either the wire run form the module to the second terminal on the single fire coil or the single fire coil it self.. primary resistance show 3 ohms on each coil.. do any of you guys have a spare single fire coil kicking round you may want to part with???? fireman???? oh well for now she seems to be running .. weather allowing i will try running her back and forth to work tomorrow.. ugh would like to get her back running single fire again.. guess thats it for now,, thanks guys for all the ideas.. |
