The shame of it is that they still have the patents on these designs and have done NOTHING (that we know about) with them. Does Benelli pay HD royalties for their unde the tail Radiator setup????? |

Does Benelli pay HD royalties for their unde the tail Radiator setup????? Does HD pay royalties to Britten for it? I wonder who had the idea first... PPiA |

Don't know. The HD patent was United States Patent #4,445,587, awarded on May 1, 1984 The other one for the internal engine cooling details is #4,530,315 from July 23, 1985 I think these predate the Britten. See the patent by entering those numbers HERE |

Many companies maintain patent portfolios for defensive, rather than offensive purposes. In other words, if they get sued, they have a counterclaim. I could point out hundreds of cases of patent infringement in the business I'm in; but the fact that all the companies are infringing on each other more or less keeps the peace. BTW, I had a new patent issued today |

Secret? Nah, anyone can go to the patent office's site and read about it ... highly recommended if you're having trouble sleeping. I just thought it was an odd coincidence that patents were being discussed and I had one issue today. Erik's are infinitely more interesting, trust me. |

aw jeez, you guys are embarassing me ... I shouldn't have said anything. Me and my big mouth. It ain't that big of a deal in my business. Lots of the engineers in this company have patents, some have a hell of lot more than me. One guy I know, we sit on the company's patent committee together, he's a "fellow" (less than 1% of the engineering population) and he has like 80 some patents. I got a ways to go to catch up to him. |

But you have more LSRs and Buells than he! Sounds like he has some catching up to do. |

Seagate has a huge design center here, that's true, I even used to work there. There are a couple other disk drive companies that have operations in Longmont as well. But as a vendor to the business (we're a Netherlands registered corporation no less!), we work with almost all the disk drive companies, here, California, Japan, Korea, and Singapore are the main centers of disk drive development activity. That particular item was something to solve a specific problem for a Japanese customer. |

Well I made it back safe and sound(well kinda sound) The dealer meeting was pretty productive for only being there a day and a half instead of the usual 4 days I normally have to get all my stuff done. Here's a few quick highlights. The new Lightning is VERY cool in person. The funky lic. plate holder isn't as bad in person as the photos make it seem. It will still have to go on mine if I get one. They are supposed to be in the dealerships in Nov. The race kit is available for the Firebolt and the same kit fits the new Lightning(what a concept, have parts that fit more than one model) I wasn't overwhelmed by the race muffler, the dual outlets is kinda cool but it needs to be made from alum or something other than painted steel. I voiced my concern with many of the Buell people there as well as with Erik, don't know if anything will be done about it, we'll see. I did order one to put on Dougs Bolt and will have more info later. I did order some extra race ECMs and air filters to have on hand. Started my crusade to get a spot on the dealer advisory council, this is going to be a struggle I think. My DM was almost defensive at first but then actually was going to check into it for me. They now have available CHROME heel gaurds for the Firebolt. What the f---? They will sell about as well as the axle covers(no offense Dyna) I talked to another dealer that is very high on the factories favorite dealer list and we were laughing our asses off about these. He didn't order any either. Oh they also come in flat black for those of you interested. All for now I gotta get to work! -------------------- Ride to the edge! Here we go again. The new item for the Blast was axel covers when are they gonna understand that a Buell is not a Harley. Now black heelguards would be cool on the 9S if they paint the frame black hint hint hint |

Spidy, Hehheh, Yeah, a kick start Buell twin would need some sort of special timing retardation circuity for ease of starting. It would be just too cool to be able to ditch the big battery and starter motor and just have a small Li-Ion cell hidden under the seat. You'd need something to fire the ignition when starting and to power the ignition module before the alternator came online. If something like that could be made to work it would be too cool. |

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you with the answers to your questions, had to take a day off or two. Pilot and Darthane, The race kit retails for 619.99 it includes a muffler with dual outlets, a ECM and a K+N type air filter. I'll give you a 10% discount if you order it from me! Blake, They claim low 90s for HP with the race kit, I personally think that might be a tad optimistic. I brought that up in the Buell Town Hall meeting and Erik said the numbers are correct. I have a kit coming for my boss's Bolt so we will see. The heel gaurds are in fact the cheese grater thing on the side just behind and above the pegs. How many sets of chrome one do you need? By the way great debate you've got going with Cecil. We have to make this happen. Spiderman, I did tell Erik Hi for you. Ride to the edge!
