Looking in my service manual, there isn't an area for just the cable - shows the whole clutch / transmission

- do i have to remove the primary cover to do this?

i was hoping i could just remove the clutch inspection cover, but it is looking more involved.

You can pull this one off without taking the whole primary cover off.

this is after you have your clutch cable free of your control housing on the handlebars.

The clutch release is housed in the clutch inspection cover, the spring is coming off to, just pull it out with your fingers. once you pull those three bolts take off the cover and clean the inside of it, check the gasket surface. Loosen the cable at the copper adjuster in the middle of the line.

Now, you should see that screw in the middle of that spring you took off the center of the clutch hub, turn it with a small screwdriver so the nut surrounding it comes out of the clutch and dont drop it in the primary! it will be hard to get.

after you pull the adjuster nut off the center screw, your clutch ball and ramp thingy should come off with little effort, just pull evenly and it will slide out. A little twist and turn to unlock the cable from the hook, and you can start unscrewing it from the primary cover now.

FYI dont tighten the cable into the housing too much, it will crack.

if you dont know what any of this means, prolly should try and find some pictures.

take your time, check your adjustments twice, you can goof this up and smoke your clutch or do it correctly taking a little extra time for details with great results.

This answered my question and now I have another. The manual says there is an o-ring. Is that supposed to come with the clutch cable or ordered additionally? My cable was hanging out of the package when it arrived and no o-ring in sight. Any specs on the o-ring so I can pick one up locally? I have no local Buell dealer, only Harley dealers.

I do not know the part # but you should be able to call the nearest couple of Buell dealers and have it shipped express to you. I'm sure they are talking about the o-ring in the groove in the outer edge of the cover. Also you could use the old one and try to find one at a hydraulic store. But I'ld go with the stock one.

the o ring at the primary case end of the cable will PROBABLY be the same as a sporty, so your harley shop can help

Or just go to an auto parts store and find one that is about the same I.D. and about the right size.

That needs to be seated just enough to lightly deform the o-ring and create a seal. You can do it by hand usually.

The torque spec is like a few inch pounds. The cable ends are aluminum and will twist off very easily.

It won't come unscrewed in use because of the curve in it.

Also it is very easy to strip the threads where the cable screws into the primary.

Look for a series of tear stained posts in the KV about the foibles of over tightening clutch cables.

Harbor Freight sells a container of 500 or so different sized nitrle o-rings for $8 or something... darned handy. Get the box of assorted springs that is right beside it.

I'm glad I found this! I was driving in traffic and "feu-ting!" the end of my clutch cable flew off and smoked a car! That was entertaining but pushing it home wasn't. Going to replace it now!
