It's an early M2. 96/97 S1 case covers are polished. 98 S1 is sanded. You can tell it's an pre M2 because of the missing framebrace as mentioned. It also has an M2 oiltank. The triangles where the passenger pegs are mounted are slightly smaller than the S1. If you look closely you can see behind the rearset that the riderspegs mounting holes are lower, so definitely M2 frame. The hydraulic clutch is from an ebay seller named col.time, also the front motormount and the pullycover. I don't like the way he bended the rear header under the frame, probably knee troubles with that rearset. The tankbra is OEM buell and can be purchased on ebay. I know for a fact, 1996, and 1997 S1's had silver/non-polished cases and covers. I did an estimate on a 1996 S1 that caught fire; the extinguisher stuff stained his engine this beautiful amber/bronze/gold color. I loved that color. That was also the first S1 I ever rode. I remember a 1997 S1 with silver painted Primary cover, because I scratched it, and had to replace it My 1998 WL has polished. |

I'm not saying there weren't some that WERE polished, I'm just saying I know they came painted silver. |

I have a 97 S1. Had it since its birth out of the crate. It came with polished side covers with no clear coat. In these years the sportsters were also polished but had a clear on them that would peal after a while. Good excuse to upgrade to chrome cases. In 96 the S1 rockers were polished and 97 they came with a brushed scotch brite finish, no clear. I worked for the HD dealer at the time. This is how all ours came in. We didn't get an M2 until 98 and it had the sand cast cases like the 2 pics. They may have had silver paint on them too. I never saw an s1 with painted side covers. It is certainly possible that there were different lots or production runs. Not too many "original" older buells out there so just finding pictures is hard to tell from. I still like when someone says "I like all the chrome on your bike" There is none...All polished alum. |
