considering that the "issue" I took the bike in for was a drained battery after sitting for only a few (5) days....I guess a non-CA ECM could be a problem....????

I don't know yet if the "issue" was fixed...I will next week though

Either the ECM fixed a problem or BMC took it to download the error logs.
Like reading an airplane's Black Box after an "incident".

If it works, ride it... a lot.

Slyprinna yes made it to the dealership and the service manager that was suppose to get in contact with Buell has thursday's off,

I had talked to him monday about getting the specs from BMC to test the bike and have numbers to go by,

tuesday I called again to see if he did get in contact with BMC and to give him some numbers I had that might help when talking to BMC,

I had asked if thursday would be good day to bring the bike in which should have been plenty of time to get in touch with BMC,

So the service manager who was suppose to get in contact with BMC like everyone has been telling me to do, blew me off,

He said that thursday would be good to bring it in knowing that he has thursday's off.

He did not tell anyone anything about me coming thursday or give anyone info on my bike so it could be tested the right way and have the specs to know if it is right or wrong.

I also would think three days to get that info from BMC would be plenty of time,

I think that he would be able to get that info in one day,

no one there knew anything so another wasted trip.

So Mike, did the bike go dead battery once there? Did it go dead at all yesterday?
It was a long trip there right?

Fresno:

"Funny how you can dismiss such blunders, Court, yet BMC walks on water everywhere else."

What a crazy mischaracterization of Court's attitude towards Buell. The man has publicly excoriated Buell for their deficiencies. Yet he never leaves it at that; he always offers constructive advice as well.

But hey, if your heart's desire is to start a thread to critique Mr. Canfield, please do so; he even has his own section on BadWeB. Just be prepared to have much of the entire place come down on your head in his defense. We all have our quirks. I don't know anyone who has done more for more Buell owners than Court.

So, if you have something of value, something constructive, informative, entertaining, intriguing or whatnot to add to this discussion thread, please do so. Otherwise, quite is appreciated.

You've been asked to honor this same request before, yes?

I'm not at all concerned about what causes you to behave so negatively/inappropriately here. When you cease doing so, I will be 100% satisfied with that alone and will have no desire whatsoever to be informed of what caused your former unwelcome contributions here.

I strongly suggest that you apply same attitude towards a singular case of a factory warranty repair/replacement. No manufacturer is going to share such information with the public as you imagine they should. It just doesn't happen.

Businesses are like that, they don't throw their subcontractors (often views as partners) under the bus at the first sign of trouble, they work with them in private to address problems and concerns.

>>>The man has publicly excoriated Buell for their deficiencies.

And have the nasty-grams from Harley-Davidson to prove it.

No biggie . . . I call the blunders I see . . . miss some . . and have the pleasure of defusing many an inaccurate internet urban legend.

Hey . . . have you heard the one about the 1125R with the charging system that wouldn't?

: )

I suspect Mike's bike will be just fine.

>>>I also would think three days to get that info from BMC would be plenty of time,

Mike . . .be aware that once you get past Customer Service and start dealing with the Tech Group you are dealing with folks who could attend an office party in a Mini-Cooper. The last time I got pissy about waiting 3 days I found out the guy I was looking for was in Europe testing.

The good news is that there are a couple of these guys who are REALLY good.

I tried to count the other day . . just using the things you've mentioned and I was coming up with something like 40 NEW NON-FACTORY connections. I did not include all the temporary "on-off's" for testing.

I might, if I were you, try checking each and every connection.

My prediction is that your battery has nothing to do with it and your problems are totally unrelated to total load.

Blake a battery discharging is a problem I think,

on the Buell site it says 3000 rpms high and low beams with heated grips and the bike is able to handle this,

I was riding at 3800 rpms and just had high and low beams on and the battery was slowly discharging and was 12.4 after 1.5 hours,

now at 3800 it should put out more power then 3000 rpms,

the ride home was at 4500 rpms and had a fully charged battery when I got home,

so no problems but the battery was discharging when it should have kept the battery fully charged at that rpm and not using heated grips.

Blake I got two questions that I was suppose to get answers to,

1 how many watts does the bike use with everything on,

2 how many watts does the bike generate at 4000 rpms,

now let say I have at that rpm 100 watts left over and I use a 90 watts which leaves 10 watts and should keep the battery at full charge with those ten extra watts,

am I right or wrong?

anyway how can I get these numbers,

I was promised these numbers.

Court this time it was the dealership I bought the bike from,

he told me that thursday was good and then I find out this is his day off every week,

so the question is did he do this on purpose?

I do know when I ask him if he could get specs from BMC and test my bike he sounded frustrated or something,

I was warned there is a guy there that hates Buells,

maybe this is the guy.

The Dealership is awesome it is the service department that sucks,

I can tell story's that are allot worse than this service department.

I think nobody takes pride in what they do for work anymore and just show up for work just to do as little as they can to collect a pay check.

If you add up all the light bulb wattages,
Headlamps Six bulb with high, low, and daylight running modes
Daylight mode 35-watt [H8]
Low beam 70-watt low beam (two each 35-watt),
High beam 140-watt (70-watt low beam plus two bulbs, each 35-watt)
Tail/Stop Lights 5W/21W
Turn Signal Lights LED manual canceling
License Plate Light 5W
That looks to be about 220 watts (with high beams on) just for lighting alone which is a tick more than half of the rated 432 watt max output. The Buell website does not seem to show the heated grip wattage output so that can't be accounted for at this time. The wattage output is variable (the lower the rpm the lower the output wattage) Just as the Buell customer service info states riding the bike in the 3000 rpm and up range is considered the normal operating condition. Some of us are very use to riding the XB bikes in the 3000 to 4000 rpm range which has the XB bikes in the middle of there power bands and effectively at peak wattage output for the charging system. The 1125 just needs to be run at a higher rpm and the charging system will be just as efficient as the XB series.

I believe at this point...concerning Baggermike's deal...

Fact 1. The bike is under warranty, unless something really ill, by owner, has been proven cause. Not yet, as owner still has his bike and as of a different thread just read, added an aftermarket tail light?

Fact 2. All the threads listed here to date bring way to many questions mixing in with the problems associated...electrically speaking.

Fact 3...AND most important! A warranty issue/dealer service responsible party MUST have a fair amount of time/access with THE bike in order to resolve.

Recommendation...

Remove ALL electical related add ons BEFORE you LEAVE your bike at the dealer. Give them a week to diagnois and THEN question their findings...

Or leave all as is and wait patiently for just one week.

I assure you, they will have answers for you if done either way...just don't be offended or surprised if it is something that you don't want to hear.

No ill meant to Baggermike. I think WE ALL want to see him resolved and happy with his 11.

Slypiranna +10

I agree completely.

I have given my dealer ample time to work on it and they have been absolutely awesome!!! Livermore HD/Buell ROCKS !!!

I also have not tried to tell them what to check...only what the symptoms are....they needed to go by the book to diagnose the issue(s) I have had.

These bikes have a 2 year warranty with no mileage limits (thank you Buell)....let the dealers do their jobs and fix any problems that arise.

If your dealer can't / won't help....find another one....I changed dealerships last year when the closest one couldn't replace my XB9's clutch cable when it had snapped on the way to work. They couldn't fit it into their schedule for 3 weeks....they lost me as a customer.

I might as well update since I started this thread.

My bike has been holding a charge and seems like it is charging fine.
I did buy a battery tender and bought connectors for all my ATV,S3,John Deere.

I only had the tender on the 1125r once a few days ago.
I checked my voltage this morning and it was 12.79 so all is well.

I did a little research based on data available here on badweb. In other words, the numbers below are based on posts here on bad web.

Keep in mind most of these problems are considered resolved by the individual owners and there is no clear root cause.

92 - 1125R owners.
71 - Owners have had no reported charging systems problems.
21 - Owners reporting one or more charging system related problem.
18 - Reported dead batteries.
1 - Reported grounding problem.
4 - Reported Voltage Regulator problems.
1 - Reported Stator problem.
2 - Reported Security system draining battery.
1 - Reported ECM replaced (for dead battery).
2 - Reported suspected stalling relating to low battery.

77% - No Reported problem
23% - Some sort of charging system related problem reported.

I gathered this data by digging through all the archives, threads etc, I may have missed a post here or there, but did the best I could. I have a spreadsheet with all this data but since it has names and vin# I'm reluctant to post it here.

Blake or Court I'll be glad to share this spreadsheet with you if your interested?

That is a reliable sample size.

It is?

Show me the math and let me know what confidence level you are working at. Also have you segregated folks who have left the stock bike untouched and those, like Baggermike, who have made something on the order of 40 non-factory connect/disconnects? I think your sample looses validity when you allow all bikes, regardless of owner mods, to populate it.

Determination of Sample Size

I would, without working the problem, agree that it **MAY** (I'm wild ass guessing here too) be a 2SD confident sample size among Badweb. Are you inferring that the sample size is valid for ALL Buells?

Yeah, I'd like to see the spreadsheet but my interest would be in another issue that I think I could get from the spreadsheet. Fire it off to ME and next week I want to try something.

Thanks for your hard work.

Mike:

You are correct. I am estimating.

You have mentioned, at various points, items such as: (and please correct me, I'm working from memory)

  • Heated vest
  • heated glove
  • I thought you may have mentioned socks or chaps - maybe not.
  • All four headlights
  • GPS
  • Radar detector
  • turn signals replaced with LED
  • Shift Light
  • Volt meter
  • and about 20 "connect-disconnect to check" items

My count may be wrong, but I have ridden Buells over long distances in more states than anyone on the earth with the exception of Brankin.

I have helped prepare Buells for no less than 15 different events from Iron Butt competition to the Ulysses "Cairo to Cape Town - Extreme Adventure" trip.

I've learned one thing for certain.

The most reliable motorcycle ( it applies to Harley's, Hondas, Hodakas and Buells) is one that has not been touched.

Taking a new motorcycle and doing all sorts of "experimental" things is akin to tossing Derek Jeter a bucket of bb's and yelling catch. There is no way you can manage that much change at one time.

I'm not sure about the 40. I tend to think it is likely low. But I suspect, based on the number of 1125R's that are exhibiting NO PROBLEMS that your maladies MAY (I don't know yet either . . . there is simply no data) prove to be self-induced.

Regardless of if it is a design issue or an owner-installed accessory issue making changes, any changes, makes it very difficult to trouble shoot. When I go to trouble shoot a Buell the first thing I try to do is reduce the number of known variables.

You are right.

I could be wrong.

I'm no engineer, but I'm also no stranger to data analysis. There's always statistical debate about culling the sample population whether it's eliminating outliers or throwing out certain data points. I've always followed the logic of include all available data. If there are biases naturally occurring in the data so be it, but don't create bias by filtering the data.

As I said, I'm no engineer, but in my current job, I'm responsible for an enterprise quality assurance group. I am six sigma trained and have 80 some odd engineers reporting to me of various disciplines including electrical engineers, software engineers, network engineers etc.

The data is what it is. I will not filter it. You have a valid point if you want me to add a data point for those who have made electrical mods. I'll try to do that. But still how you use that information can create problems. For example after my electrical problems, I added a voltage gauge to help me manage the problem. Since my problem occurred prior to mods, it would be inappropriate to through my record out based on the fact I had modified the bike.

Meanwhile I will send you what I have.

The data is what it is.

Was any data gathered from any place other than badweb?

I agree that it would not be appropriate to filter. It is however appropriate to point out that the tasting was conducted from a single slice of the pie and a small one at that.

Bryan:

By the way . . . I agree with everything you are saying. I too am trained in Six Sigma (in fact I need to get some of my books back from some folks at HD) and I think one more thing we can agree on is that what you have presented is DATA, not conclusions.

The problem with the internet is that someone, lacking an understanding of data, could make the foolish statement that "23% of Buell 1125R's have problems".

That, of course, would be akin to saying golf balls and eggs come from the same place as proven by their similarities.
