.... but I'm an Ss guy, and totally ignorant when it comes to the 1125R. I'm curious, how does the Rotax compare to the Lightning 1200 engine concerning maintenance? The simplicity of the S engine was kinda' the deciding factor when I was shopping around, since I'm only mildly handy and don't have a lot of tools. The 1125R looks like an awesome machine... would it be much more difficult to maintain? ~SM |

Do you like coolant?? That is the very first question you should ask yourself. The only thing that the liquid cooled motor is calling for beyond the air cooled motor is the Valve adjustments and coolant flushes. This info is speculation only as I dont own one and have not seen a manual yet. |

I'm mostly indifferent about coolant. It's one more thing to worry about, sure, but at least it's not a difficult thing to worry about (unless they did something crazy with the drain). Now valve adjustments.... that's a bigger deal. I really liked the fact the S didn't need such a thing, because I've heard some of the Jap bikes were nightmares to adjust. Wonder why they didn't rig that to be fluid-controlled like the S? They added more fluid to the engine and used less of it...? ~SM |

1125R pluses compared to XB + no primary chain adjustment + no primary fluid replacement + no clutch adjustment 1125R drawbacks - coolant checks and replacement (replace every 31,000 miles) - valve adjustment (check and adjust every 12.000 miles) Once I get the shop manual I'll decide if I take on the valve adjustment myself. Most likely I'll have the dealer do that. Otherwise, the rest of the maintenance is pretty straight forward. |

I am hoping my dealership will let me watch how the do rotate the engine and adjust the valves, it is the only way they will get money from me is if I can watch, I do not trust service shops for good reasons, I will tell one story but have many. I brought my bike in when I was young to be re jetted, they charged me 65 dollars and told me the jets could not be changed because they were pressed in, six month later I took the carb off and they were screw out jets, guess who got screwed? I went crazy looking for my receipt to bring it back to them but could not find it, I have more stories just like this one. Mike |

Good point Swordsman, yea make that extra juice do work. The Valve adjustments are at 12000 miles. Add a coolant check to your daily or weekly check and you'll just about have all the extra maintenance. Hopefully these cams will hold up better than Kawis |

Once the engine is rotated for service the valve adjustment procedure is simple. Once you look at the procedure it's obvious there are designed features that minimize the difficulty. (Finger follower spacers that allow you to slide the follower out of the way to replace the shims - with the camshafts in place) It's definitely not a Ducati. |

Does anyone has an estimate of what the time alotment is for the valve adjustment? I am wondering at every 12k what the cost would be? Another one I am surprised at. Thought most new motors were moving to 25k for valve check. Probability of adjustment at 25k is low. |

I don't know...I was told by a tech that if they aren't ticking, don't even bother tearing into it to check. ??? |

if I remember correctly, arent these a shim and bucket setup? I dont believe this setup can become to tight with wear. |

Huh? Never heard that one before. If I understand it correctly, Valves become tight due to valve face and seat wear. Valves become loose due to cam/follower/stem wear. I'm not sure what it would be about bucket/shim designs that preclude them from going tight. Please explain. Al |

If I understand it correctly, Valves become tight due to valve face and seat wear. Valves become loose due to cam/follower/stem wear. Al is correct and it doesn't matter if it has a bucket/shim setup. (Message edited by dentguy on April 09, 2008) |

Oh yah, I forgot about valve seat wear. what I meant was when two pieces of metal touching each other wear the actual pieces get shorter causing them to become loose. |

I think my buddy's ST1300 doesn't need to have the valves checked until like 40-something thousand miles. I can't wait to test ride an 1125, but the low fuel mileage and higher service stuff is such a turn off. I know I'll cave once I ride it though, lol. |

ST1300 have a 16,000 mile valve check interval. Mine didn't change/ need adjustment until the 80,000 mile check and then it was only 4 out of 16 that needed a minor adjustment. Even then they were just at the edge of the spec. and not totally out of the spec. 3 were on the tight side, one was on the loose side. Odds are that with the proper design of the 1125r, checks will be done but, changes won't be required until the 5-6 check. YRMV but that's my take. Neil S. |
