My son insisted on riding his dirt bike in sneakers this past weekend. After about 20 minutes he burned his ankle on the motor. He swore he would never ride again without his boots.
You see, even a 9-year old can learn from their mistakes. |

Does it make some people better, faster riders to condescend to those of us who dont wear head to toe leathers, armor, pads, and tampons?

I'm a firm believer in freedom of choice. However, don't pull up to me at a light and ask why I'm wearing a helmet and all that gear (like a dumb a*# kid did riding a HD not too long ago).
I told him if he had to ask the answer would be lost on him. Naturally, he was at a loss for words. |

Those of us who wear the gear only care about those who are willing to listen and heed warnings about why wearing ALL the gear ALL the time is important.
NONE of us give a crap about folks who have made the conscious decision not to. Just don't expect us to scrape those folks off the street. Personal choice means I choose not to spend my time with a garden hose and bleach at an accident scene. As part of their personal choice, they should make damn sure they don't file a personal injury claim with their insurance company or with their health provider because their injuries are more severe due to lack of gear. It increases MY rates.
Less gear is less gear. Sometimes I choose NOT to wear my seat belt. I know I should. I know that my level of protection is less when I am not wearing it.
The difference is that I don't get indignant when people state the obvious, that I SHOULD wear it. |

Having resisted posting what I really thought about such a post, I have come up with a less offensive retort.
I feel not better as a person than anyone, I do however feel better protected than people that dress as you do.
How's that for restraint?

How many of us got caught in that pea soup fog at Suches? The truck that crossed the double yellows didn't care whether I was going 30 or 60. |

Second that on "Pea Soup ala Suches", later I wound up following a fella on a GS with a super lime yellow suit on ...but in the foggy conditions, it stood out despite the inevitable 'eeeew yuck' comment. I'm rethinking what ideal raingear should be ....that jacket stood out far more than every scrap of reflective tape that could've been applied to the bike.
Tampons? darn it I knew I was missing a piece of gear!

BTW...I just modded my carbon fiber tampon with a braided steel pull-cord. Now I need one of those uber cool 3% stickers for it... |

Well, I knew I might ruffle some feathers with that one. If I was being an •••••••, I apologize. It just gets tiring whenever this stuff comes up and people get on their high horse and preachy.
For the record, I almost always wear a bucket, leather jacket, and jeans. Thats my choice. I dont feel like Im being unreasonably stupid for not dressing up like tron to ride to the bank.
If you think my choice affects your insurance, then I dont know what to tell you. Insurance rates are as high as the market allows, and they would be no matter the reasoning they use. |

I LOVE the guys that say they dont wear a full face because they like to feel the wind in their hair.. Along with every bug and pebble that you come across huh? screw that noise...
Oh, btw, a waitress at my moms restaurant died friday night. hit a deer and was pretty much unharmed except for head trama. He didnt own a helmet... just a little something to think about.. |

I've never ridden without at least heavy jeans and boots, and the LAST time I rode without a jacket, I scraped a couple of layers of skin off my right shoulder after being centerpunched by a wide asleep driver.
As for the clowns I see out there in shorts and flip flops, well obviously they've never even stacked on a bicycle, let alone a motorcycle. When my knees allowed me to spend a lot more time on my mountain bike, I'd shake my head over riders that didnt think they needed gloves. 9 times out of 10, they'd refuse the offer to use someone else's spare gloves, but after going over the bars onto red shale or sandstone, THEN it wasn't such a bad idea. |

I guess your right, I can be indignant toward self righteous people who feel the need to tell others how they should dress and back it up with an ignorant statement about how those who dont raise your insurance rates. Let me explain to you who is really raising your rates.
In Florida last year there were approximately 900 deaths on motorcycles. Of those some were wearing helmets as I always do, many were not. some were even wearing full armour as you criticize others for not doing, but the most interesting part is that NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE HAD TAKEN AN MSF RIDERS SAFETY COURSE! All of the armour in the world is not going to save you if you dont know how to swerve and counter, or swerve in a curve, or brake out of a curve. Most motorcycle accidents happen to people who hit something that is directly in front of them and they take NO EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID IT! Lack of knowledge is raising your insurance rates, people who ride beyond their means are raising your rates, my choice not to wear armour do not. And by the way, if I have an accident that is your fault, whether Im wearing a full suit of armour or a thong and a Hanna Montana wig, I will file insurance claim for every bit of injury you have caused me. Dress however makes you feel safe. I wasnt putting anyone down for their choice to wear gear and I wasnt calling anyone out. But if you really want to be safe, learn how to ride through an MSF course and practice what you have learned until it is second nature. |

I live by this motto... found it in an issue of Maxim Magazine years back:
"Nothing is boring when you're wearing armor."
I can't even remember what they were talking about (it was funny!), but I clipped it out and stuck it on the wall, and it's been there ever since. I think it's true. It's like a costume party every time I go out. I love Halloween! 
They call me the Red Power Ranger at work.
BTW, I find armor to be quite comfortable. All depends on what you buy. I don't even realize it's there.

When you go down, it does not matter what caused you to go down. It doesn't matter if you are Valentio Rossi, took an MSF or have the greatest insurance going. The thing that matters is what gear you have on, period.
Wearing gear does not necessarily mean you will not get injured, but gear will reduce the likely hood of severe injury. The less injury, the less insurance claim, the lower the rates for everybody. The greater the injury, the greater the insurance claim, the higher rates passed onto everybody.
So, wear what you want to wear and I'll wear what I want to wear. I'll laugh at those I see wearing flip flops and tees and they can laugh at me for looking like a NASA reject. |

Hell, If there were no helmet law, I would ride lidless for most of my riding, in jeans and a t-shirt with a pair of gloves and boots.
I have been on two wheels for 24 of the 29 years I have been here. Crashed with and without gear and still dont give a shit. My last good crash would have been really ugly without gear, but I would not have been rocking a wheelie without it.
My choice to make, and for you my insurance is higher now folks, I never filed a claim and am still paying the bills, it is called PERSONAL LIABILITY! |

I'll stop there.Wear what you want, tis no body's business but your own. If you have the unlucky chance of going down with out gear, don't expect as much pity, help, empathy, etc....
My 1st trip to MB taught me a lesson about gear, it was and is my freind(specially in that area). And yes I would rather sweat than bleed! |
