Knot sure if this is the right place to put this so I will put it in a few spots. I am being transfered (for work) from Dirty Jersey to California. Since I am senior of the losers being transfered, I have my choice of cities to work out of. I will be commuting in a company pick-up truck so lane-splitting is not an option. All I do when I'm not working is ride / race my Buells and ride my road bicycle. The cities I get to choose between are San Francisco and Los Angeles. I am basing my decision on distance to racetracks that have trackdays and racing and work commute time. I am searching Roadracing world & motorcycle technology for track riding groups and racing groups. Any info/advise that helps me make my decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. | ||

Well, the LA 'area' as far as I know has 3 tracks that run track days (ButtonWillow, Willow Springs, California Speedway) as well as Pahrump, NV and perhaps others in the AZ, Nev area, not to mention those near San Francisco. Living in bleak NJ, I'm not sure that you realize that LA has the best weather in the world. No rain, no bugs, no ice, no snow (though snow is available within a short drive). So if your going to get tired of the same sunny forecast everyday, move to San Fran! Paradise does not come without its pitfalls though. Traffic, high housing costs (same as SanFran, but falling)and traffic. | ||

Infineon (Sears Point, near Sonoma, CA) and Laguna Seca (near Monterey, CA) are the major tracks for the San Francisco Bay area. Jack | ||

Heck - even though I live here in SO Ca area, I have to say that Thunderhill is my favorite track. Designed by racers it really does have more than almost any track. Off-camber turn, decreasing radius, hairpin cresting a hill (like Laguna's corkscrew) - a long fast back section make for a challenging ride. Takes a little longer to learn but it's a TON more fun. Also, Pahrump (Spring Mountain) and Reno Fernley are within a few hours of either the Bay Area or LA Basin. Haven't been on Spring Mtn since the re-design. Las Vegas is a great facility - though there are no real elevation changes. Fon-Tucky (CA Speedway or whatever Fontana is called this season) is OBSCENELY expensive to operate because they've brought it up to NA$CAR standards. Track days there are all around the $300 level. |
