Knot sure if this is the right place to put this so I will put it in a few spots. I am being transfered (for work) from Dirty Jersey to California. Since I am senior of the losers being transfered, I have my choice of cities to work out of. I will be commuting in a company pick-up truck so lane-splitting is not an option. All I do when I'm not working is ride / race my Buells and ride my road bicycle. The cities I get to choose between are San Francisco and Los Angeles. I am basing my decision on distance to racetracks that have trackdays and racing and work commute time. I am searching Roadracing world & motorcycle technology for track riding groups and racing groups. Any info/advise that helps me make my decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Two Words: L. A. Motor sports capital of the USA, LA has easy access to the Mailbu Canyons, and Willow Springs which has a motorcycle club, frequent track days, and an on-track motorcycle repair/rental shop. Perhaps some Californian enthusiast like Slaughter, and Buellgirlie, can give you the real scoop. I live in New York. PS: You'll probably get more information if you start a thread on this subject on the Quick Board. This topic is a place for Buell riders to discuss their Harleys.

San Francisco. I am a native son of California and want nothing more to do with it. I lived north of San Francisco until 2001 when I moved to Maine. I lived about 5 miles from Sears Point Raceway, now called Infeon Raceway. That is good start for living in the Bay Area, it will give you a 45 to 90 minute commute to San Francisco. That is considered a reasonable commute by most people in that area. California is a zoo, they let anybody in. But if you can rank "normal" on a scale of 1 to 10, the Los Angeles Basin would rate a 2 or 3. Anything from the Salinas Valley north would start at about a 7 and go up as you moved further north. Jack P.S. That's a pretty silly profile you have there. Where are you living now, it might be helpful to answering your question. (Message edited by jackbequick on April 06, 2008) |

I'm gonna haveta say SF. The weather is better in LA but in the Bay Area you'll need just half the time to get from major urban to great riding areas (check out Pashnit.com). Now, if you were into MX/desert riding then the LA basin is the place to be. Either way though, you can't go wrong. It'll take you years to run out of new things to see. |

Native Californian here. Born in LA, now living in Cincinnati Ohio, YUK! If I could live anywhere it would be north CA, but I would also have to have endless amounts of money! SF is a bit more expensive than LA, but 2 good tracks close by and cleaner air! Most importantly have fun - ya' lucky bastard! |

Northern CA for sure. Infineon Raceway in Northbay, Laguna Seca near Monterey for track days. Santa Cruz Mtns for riding! It's a year around hobby here! Barry Hollister, CA |

SF. I live in the San Francisco bay area - L.A. isn't so hot for motorcycling. I lived there for a few years but now I am back by the bay. L.A. Yes, the canyons are great when you get on a road without some yahoo driving slowly and plugging up the roadway - a very common occurrence. My observation is that SO cal riding is better weekdays than weekends. It's a huge area with about a bazillion people clogging up anything that looks like a road. Yes, the canyon roads are great, but can't hold a candle to what awaits you in the San Francisco bay area. In the SF bay area: Tracks: Sears Point (Infinion Raceway) and Laguna Seca (Mazda Raceway) are both within easy reach. Loads of well maintained and less traveled mountain and coastal roads await. Fewer people. Early mornings are the best. Quite a few OHV parks (not that that's your thing) are easily reachable. The weather is cooler and the air cleaner, more conducive to riding. The area is smaller - so access to great roads is faster. My vote? Northern California. |

I used to have to travel to LA for training at an old job. Brown. Air. They say it makes for great sunsets, but all it did for me was aggravate my sinuses and make me sick for a week after I got home. And the people are just....weird. Granted I was working in the entertainment industry at the time, which I'm sure magnifies the weirdness...but I didn't really care for the place. |

Definitely SF, for all the above reasons (climate, seasons, scenic beauty, better restaurants), but also because of the wilderness and mountains up above wine country. Oh yeah, and wine country too. Seriously, having Route 1/Hwy 101 bookend the region is reason enough. Big Sur to the Redwoods cannot be beat. www.dubbelju.com will hook you up with a rental, so you can see for yourself. And hey, I grew up in Cincinnati. It's not that bad...is it? |
