Gentlemen...I am in need of serious help. Just got done doing some custom work on my bike an fixed a bunch ofthings. Nothing related to the starting system. Starter is barely kicking out and may turn the engine through one compression stroke. The ground wire from the Voltage reg the screws in the back it is getting so hot that it is starting to melt. I checked battery voltage and it is good. Battery is a factory Harley batt that is less than a year old. I did change all of my oil lines to steel braid an realized they were arcing on the battery. Have since covered them with rubber where they would contact the starter and still have the same problem. Any help would be appreciated. |

I miss stated something. The steel lines were arcing on the starter and not the battery |

Also, I am trying to start it in nuetral without a clutch cable installed. Mine broke off at the primary. Could the lack of a cable be too much load for the starter to handle? |

The VR ground wire getting hot like that is a good clue that something is amiss with the battery-to-engine ground circuit. I'd start troubleshooting by removing the ground strap from the engine case and the frame and give the ends of it, the lugs, a good cleaning with sandpaper or file. Also scrape off any paint or corrosion where the ground strap gets bolted to the frame and engine. Reinstall the ground strap and see if the starter works any better. |

Thanks Sparky, as I was looking at the service manual wiring diag. I noticed, and forgot, that the ground strap from the VR to the exaust mount was not installed. I threw it away because it was jacked up and forgot to get a new one. I'll pick one up today and hopefully give it a shot. |

Got it fixed and it sounds great. Replaced the front and rear straps. Big difference in starter speed from before I broke it down. thanks again Sparky |
