Can I change the filter out without draining all the oil. I've never had a dry sump vehicle before.. I changed the oil this weekend but my filter pliers apparently punched a small hole in the filter. Those Buell filters seem really thin... | ||

Yes, but you will have to run the bike and check the level. Also, NEVER USE PLIERS TO INSTALL A FILTER EVER!!!!!! The RIGHT WAY to install a filter on ANY AND EVERY MOTOR is 1/4 to 1/2 turn after the gasket seats. I only use the caps for emphasis, I am by no means yelling at you. I have changed at least 100,000 oil filters in my life on cars, trucks and bikes and never had one leak or vibrate off. Besides a filter that was installed properly will not need pliers to remove either. Good luck, enjoy, and welcome to Badweb! | ||

look into a proper oil filter wrench/socket to remove a stubborn one, and never install with any tools besides your hand. Make sure your o-ring on the filter is clean and the mating surface as well, lube with a fingertips worth of oil around said oil ring as well. This will make it seal at that 1/2 turn after it seats the gasket and make it a no-fuss operation next time so you dont need a tool to remove. be sure and fill the filter with the 4 oz. recommendation as well. I'm sure we can get about 1,000 tips and tricks for changing your oil going on around here, welcome to badweb. | ||

I used "oil filter pliers" as I have on my car (which uses the same filter) for the past 80 changes without issue. Then again you can't get any leverage on its filter otherwise. I'll do it by hand this time. |
