Hey Guys,

I am completely new here... both on the forum and with the bike.

So last week I saw a 2002 S3T with 4500 miles... LOADED... bags, screens, heated jacket, blah blah blah... but most importantly it came with a Race ECU, K&N Filter w/Carbon fiber cover, and a Supertrapp w/15 discs.

So here is my question... the stock exhaust with stock ECU and the K&N filter was nice a quiet and the wheel would come up in first gear...

Now, I added the race ECU and the Supertrapp with 15 discs (no packing material in it... need to get some). The bike is louder by quit a bit, is seems to spin up fast, but the front end does not seem to come up as easy with this set up. I did not ride the old setup much, but seat of the pants seems that the bike is about the same... hard to tell.

So... here are my questions:
- do I need a TPS reset? What is this? What should I be looking for as indicators as I posible symptom?

- Should a race ECU/K&N/Supertrapp setup be a radically better performer than the stock ECU/K&N/Stock Exhaust?

- How many discs do you run in the Supertrapp? I live in Seattle so my level is pretty much sea level... just wondering

- Should the bike run better with the packing material in it?

I love the sound... it sounds very badass harley like... a lot of cool noise, but in reality I would rather have more power less noise then more noise less power.

I like the stock set up for touring... the race kit for being noticed and sounding cool... and hopefully more power once I get it dialed in.

I have a feeling that once I get this set up it is going to be one sweet ride. All my other bikes are japs... Vstrom 1000, FJ1200, KLX650, CB200t...

Thanks guys ANY direction about ANYTHING on this bike would be great. I have found some limited stuff on the net, but limited... I am hoping you all can help me out.

Any time you change the ECM a reset is needed, any time you alter the TPS pot you need a reset,

changes in the pipe and the filter you need to allow the ECM to relearn for conditions. [ AFV reset / relearn ]

the packing dampens the sound remove disks to quiet the exhaust check that you have the updated super trapp if you have the purchase recipt and have an old one you may be able to get the update.

The race ECU has better drivability but is tuned for the race kit it also runs richer
possibly excessivly

spend some time reading through the Knoldge Vault [KV ]

congrats..

Welcome. Fine acquisition. 2002 had all the updates/advancements. You shouldn't have much to worry about. Check out the X1 files, good info there. The chip/exhaust/intake upgrade s/ make a noticeable difference. It did for me, especially in low and mid range RPM's. I also have the STrapp, I run 24 discs. Great sound and best power curve according to dyno. The dyno is avail at NRHS ( I think ). More discs will mean more power but also more sound. Mine is loud but relatively quiet in comparison to the D & D. You will need the " race " screws to run more than 15 or 16 discs. Even though bike has low miles I w/ do a plug/wire upgrade and change fuel filter. I use the Pro-Series plugs/wires w/ great results. Be sure to get the right temp plugs. Enjoy.

Hey Guys,

Thanks so much for the prompt replies guys.

I will be ordering up packing material, 12 more discs (for a total of upto 27), and get the TPS reset. The ST appears to be the updated version.

A few more questions:
- should a harley shop be able to do the reset? or is this something specific to Buell? I am not sure the level of cross over here and I have great harley shop down the road and the nearest Buell is 30 or so miles away... so I was wondering.

- Where do I order the upgraded plug wires/plugs/fuel filter? I am having a hard time finding suppliers for Buell parts.

Thanks again for all the help.

Best regards,

Fuel filter s/ be stock item thru Harley. Same for the Buell Pro-Series plugs. The Pro-Series wires I found at Ironmachine. There are other quality plugs/wires avail but I try to use Buell parts whenever possible. I w/ think an H-D dealer could do a TPS reset. Make sure you have the right screws for the extra discs. If u need them, they are in the Fatbook which your HD dealer can order.

You can buy software from American sport bike, http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/9305.html, that will save you $40 or so every time you need a TPS reset. You'll find that Harley shops will agree to service Buells, but Buells are different enough that you'll pay for their learning experience. Take it from someone that has learned the hard way, buy a service manual and don't be afraid to undertake as much of the service/repairs you can do yourself. You have a great resource right here for advice and lots of opinions.

Jackiriah,
Welcome to your S3 and to this site. I love the styling of my 2000 S3 and of course the feel of the ride.

As a newbie to riding myself(just started last summer)I have found the boys and girls on this site to be an amazing collection of knowledgeable and caring individuals who are very supportive of people like me who know so little.

Do flip through the knowledge Vault. It lives up to it's name.

Enjoy your ride,
regards, Bob

Welcome.
I've got 35,000 miles on my 02. It's got a D&D can, race ECM and Pro A/C with an American Sport Bike billet backing plate. It runs great and is my primary transportation in the warmer months.

Remember, that the race ecu was dyno'd and tuned using the race header and race muffler. Not the pro series slip on. I've run both exhaust systems (as a matter of fact I've run just about everything). The race system is the best along with the D&D full system. The performance level with a slip on is not far off almost being the same. Do get a TPS reset and seriously consider getting datalink or ecmspy for optimum tuning. You don't need to do it but if you want it perfect that's the way. I've always run race ecms on both of my tubers and they do great with either the slip on or the full system. As has been said before, the race ecm will run ever so slightly on the rich side (check your plugs you'll see). It won't foul the plugs but it will keep them just rich of peak. Not bad at all. Ride safe, BR.
