Happened to mention to a guy at work that I was thinking about a buell and he knew a guy, who knew a guy with one for sale.

00' X1 Red/White Stripe with 14k on the clock, k&n and vance/hines muffler.Had a clutch 400mi ago, has had the rear shock replaced (as a recall?)

Aside from the other recalls and leaky rocker boxes, are there any other issues I should be looking for/concerned about?

As long as it's been taken care of it shouldn't give you any grief. Some folks prefer carb over FI but I've never had the first ounce of trouble with my introductory year FI. Any bugs should already be worked out, rocker box gaskets were notorious for blowing but replacing them with Cometic or James will do the trick.
If you end up with it get a service manual and save this site to your favorites as it has been a treasure trove of info. for me.

As with anything else, the more factory parts, the better.
Once you get it home, the primary shoe should be replaced. It's $17 or something.
The 2000 and back had a weak part that would sometimes break.
Buell X1: crazy awesome.
I am almost up to 82,000 miles on mine and it's still not puffing oil : )

Sure seems like it went through a clutch pretty quickly. Ditto what was said above on the primary tensioner.

Mine lasted 50,000 miles.

I think the red stripe color is awesome! You may end up replacing the shock at some point, they blow the seals. A Penske is great, but lots of $$, Works Performance is good too, not quite as pricey. Muffler mounting is important, make sure it looks good. Check for loose bolts on regular basis. Buells have little glitches that come up here and there. Throttle position sensor can go out, or so some small wire can get abraded and make the low beam go out. Be prepared to do some work on it, but dont let it get you down. The bike, and the friends you make, are great and well worth it. Also, run high quality oil like Mobil 1 synthetic. Check the primary chain tension. Change the primary oil every two motor oil changes. Lube the clutch cable. I have 23,000 on mine, stock clutch, runs great.

Sounds good. Thanks for all the tips. Clutch is kind of a concern for me as well, but apparently the owner is a larger guy (270)so maybe some aggressive driving coupled with the larger driver. I'm going to look at it tomorrow morning, so I'll try and take some pics. He only wants 3,000 for it and my buddy at work thinks that I can walk away with it for 2500 if I show up with cash.

Known issues
shock, Primary chain shoe, main switch (Key) wheel bearings, belt, Isolators, Head mount front, the air box leaks dirt into it, exhaust mounting.

other side, easy to work on, parts are available, unique, the ECM can be tweeked
,the race ecm is still available engine has hot cams in it from the factory
lotsa bits that can be polished.
Cassette tranny no fiber glass body work.

If it has the PM wheels then they are even more rare.

watch for bad isolators, and the front cylinder head mount.

Weight limit for passenger was about 300#
MAWL was 800 ~ 850 if memory serves, bike is 480 or so

I just put belt and sprockets on $500
2500$ is a steal if its in good shape.

If you are not handy and / or do not have deep pockets you may want to reconsider.

Clutch could have been a spring plate coming apart....not necessarily a sign of abuse or abnormal wear. Or...hamfisted adjustment could have burned it out. Go over all the adjustments (buy a shop manual on the way home from picking up the bike) yourself so you know where you're starting from, ride, enjoy, repeat : )

I've been working on cars since I could walk, and now I work for P&W building/rebuilding power turbines so I'm fairly handy and have more like medium depth pockets : ).

A service manual is always the first thing I tell people to buy when they ask for step by step help on the car boards I belong to, so one is first on my list if I pick this bike up.

The shock and shoe issues I'm aware of now. Key switch seems like a no-brainer. I've seen post's about the front mount bolt, any fixes available (better fastener maybe?), air box is gone. I'll do some looking for upgraded isolators, maybe in urethane.

Waiting for a call back, no answer this morning when I rang to setup a firm time. Luckily the bike isn't listed for sale anywhere yet, just by luck that I found it.

The standard Iso's are about the best Al at American Sport Bike has tried the urethane types with less than stellar results.

the mount can be up graded to a billet part. There have been endless debates on the mounting bolts

$2500 for an x1 that needs a few minor adjustements.......priceless!!!!!!

2500 is way less than i got into mine for, but my red stripe only had 4k miles and new force pipe, race emc, carbon intake, pm's.

i would be in my truck right now to pick that bike up ASAP!

Check out the X1 files. Don Castro's page has some good info as well. BTW I know where you can get a 2002 X1W, never sold/titled and still at dealer. They are asking 5K and it includes the factory 1 year warranty.

Never got a call back. Talked with my buddy at work and it turns out that I got beat to the punch, guy came by on sat to look at it and decided to take it (no shit). I'm still looking for an x1 so this thread gives me good info for when I find one.

@Warlizard Drop me a PM, that's about a $1000 more than I'm looking to spend, but for a NEW x1 I'd be willing to spend a bit more.

My guess is you need to spin-up yer turbo a little quicker! 2.5K is almost theft. My 99X1 was a 3.5K value trade(a 92V Max in great shape, but way too fast)then it had some small issues. I still feel blessed as I got the better end of the deal.

I bought my 2000 S3 2 years ago as a new leftover -- gave $5500 for it. Best deal ever. The warranty came in handy as the bugs were worked out -- and I came to understand and appreciate the machine. If I had shelled out the $3000 in work that the dealer performed under warranty I might not have been the Buell fan I am today. Now that it's out of warranty and I have found friends in the area, and the friends on this site I am not afraid to do most of the work myself -- but if I'd gotten into it used and experienced the early problems on my own dime, I think I would have traded it off for a UJM and been far less happy. An appliance is OK in the kitchen but not in the garage. There is a great sense of pride every time we complete a 3 or 4 day tour and the Buell has performed as well as the cookie cutter bikes my friends ride. I always tell them the only reason we can say we went on a motorcycle tour is because I was the on that brought the motorcycle --
I'd look seriously at the new one! --Bneck
