I found 26357-02B, and figured that's what he's talking about. My oil pressure seems to be good, so I don't think I need a new pump. I already have the B50--got it for $85. (Message edited by reuel on March 18, 2008) |

Concur w/EZ. Glitter is 'normal'. B50s will just give you more power.Really doesnt take anything away. You'd have to do serious cams to get a 5000+ rpm only 'punch'. The B50 & XB cam both peak at appx 6800rpm(which can depend on headwork, exhaust and intake). If you're drag racing or LSR then going past that doent make much sense. Road racing or running through the twisties, the B50 is good to 7500 rpm. That means you've got the same power at 4500 rpm as 7500rpm (minus some torque). The extra 1000 rpms above stock gives you a nice wide powerband to play with. Really makes it a nice bike,IMHO. A lot of it depends on how much you want to spend. You've got the B50's then add the rocker arms (but as long as you upgrade the springs, rocker arms can be added anytime easily-rockers arms cost about as much as cams!). Extra rpms or higher lift means new springs anyway (some like to shim stock valve springs instead, but I dont consider it reliable). Thats a brief summary. Make a plan on what you want to do, it will save time and money. {26391-06-updated high performance oil pump drive gear} |

This was more glitter than I'm used to seeing. I'll be taking a look at the gears under the timing cover this weekend to see if I'm about to suddenly lose oil pressure. I'm also talking to Revolution Performance. The basic kit (cylinder, piston, head) is $825. Strange that the web site says $375 for the performance kit, but the guys there tell me $399.95. I figure I can go ahead and get into the transmission and everything else since I'll have the Blast that far apart. It won't be a big jump to send the case to be bored, then I can go 600 instead of 515. I've been planning this for a couple years now, but the wife hasn't signed off on it yet. Since it's been faithful for over 7 years, she's Ok with me spending money. She just hasn't said when yet. I figure about or at least $1000 for what I want to do. Using the B50s, should I be fine with stock push rods and such? |

Yes, stock lifters and pushrods would be okay with the B50's. I'd change to Jims or Hydrorev lifters and adjustable pushrods. It'd be a good idea to do at least new lifters with new cams, especially if doing as much as you plan. |

PS Dont forget to ask for a Badweb discount. That will probably drop it down to $375! |

Gearheaderiko, I have my bike in the shop now and was going to drop of the Andrews B50 cams and the HP oil pump gear drive. My ride is a 2005 with only 1,500 miles. I saw in the tread response above from you that I should consider aftermarket lifters and adjustable pushrods are they required? Please let me know as soon as you can! Cheers, Robb |

No they are not required, just a good start for mods later on. So the Dark side wispers - lol EZ |

Concur! W/1500 miles on the ODO I wouldnt even consider it. Higher mileage engines and/or planning on upping the rev limit, I'd consider it a must. |

Got the HP oil pump gear drive but where am I going to get the Jims or Hydrorev lifters and adjustable pushrods? Any advice on where I purchase those items would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, totolandman |

why would anyone put in HEAVIER adjustable push rods when you want to get all you can get out of your engine ??? |

Concur! - You can get them in any size, however, the adjustable are handy and where often used to get the measurements for the permanent ones - if you where a racer. EZ |

You can say the same about porting. I've read articles on reducing the size of ports for increased power. He actually changed the entire shape of the ports, but ultimately reduced them by about 30% if I remember correctly. Peak HP was lower, but average HP was higher. I have the link somewhere ... |

the question is, what do you want to do with your engine ??? |

I want POWER! LOL! Really, I just want to increase my whole power curve. I'm not going to race, but I do like to be able to accelerate into traffic. I want another 1000 rpm or so. I'm not looking for max HP, but overall HP and torque gains from bottom to top. I'd like to keep some fuel economy, so I'm striving for higher compression, but I'm not expecting too much, since the Blast is already doing quite well. |

Yes - I have a friend in SSF who drag races Sportsters and he goes with the large intake small exhaust port theory - and that is how he does all his flow-bench work as well. EZ |

Things have evolved a lot from the days of big valves and mirror polished ports! There's a lot more theory that goes into it now. Reuel: 60-70mpg is still achievable with the most of the mods discussed here. |

Erik, 60-70mpg? That would be something. My completely stock Blast only got over 60 mpg once with a tail wind at 55mph. I guess I'll have to start thinking on the high comp again because my stock piston with Jardine exhaust only gives me mid 50's if I hold it about 60mph. So a couple questions: 1. About how much will a 515 piston, B50 cam and stiffer springs help my gas mileage? 2. How about just going with just the piston since I don't really need more power and really want to cut back on gas and oil use? 3. Is anyone getting over 60mpg at around 70mph? It would sort of suck to go back to the stock exhaust, but if Thanks. Paul |

Hey EZ, I can still get AA gas here. It just costs 10 cents more per gallon. Does this mean that on other web sites when the folks are saying they average 55mpg at 75mph with their 650cc BMW singles that they may be exaggerating? Oh well, I was just wondering with only one Blast to compare to and having had so many problems with it so far. The 515 is really tempting, and we are getting our tax rebate. Perhaps I can talk my wife into using mine to stimulate the revperf economy a bit. Paul |

Yes - they are stretching it a bit, I know this because I have friends in the SFMC with those BMWs and they said they average between 45 to 50mpg - with 55 being their freeway mileage. You'd probably get better mileage with the Rev 515 kit also. EZ |

Stock exhaust would only hurt mpg. While there is much debate about the quality of gas, I cant argue it since I had more problems with knock and ping last year, that was never an issue. So gas quality might be an issue for mpg, but California is also known for having cr*p gas. Stiffer valve springs wont improve anything just allow for better cams and more rpm. However, improving the combustion of the gases in the cylinder head will improve mpg. One side benefit of the XB top end was the ability to use leaner jets as the XB combustion chamber is more efficient. That improves mpg. We did get 65mpg on the SLO ride a few years back! The high comp piston is also said to improve combustion, although the jetting didnt go leaner when I installed mine. I've havent specifically checked the mpg, but it's not bad though. Improving the performance of your engine can improve mpg. Redoing the piston/cylinder will probably help as factory tolerances arent usually that good. |
