Is it just me that thinks the exhaust exiting onto the rear brake caliper kind of a flawed design. you would think it would get hot, and forget keeping the wheel clean. could this be the reason every one complains about it? I have zero seat time on mine yet (too cold) so I dont know what it is like yet. |

The exhaust has "browned" the finish on my rear wheel. I suspect it gets the rear brake so hot that it's the reason the brake howls when used. |

Careful... You might rouse the people who think that the rear brake is the spawn of satan, and that even the thought of using it will cause immediate death!!!!! I never figured out what was wrong with my brake, although I have a feeling may have been oil... But after burning it in it got a little better. I am not sure how much the exhaust affects it if the rear brake is being used regularly |

I like my rear brake and think it is just right, there was a guy on here that did put turn out tips on the exhaust and has pictures posted back in january but forget his name but if you search it is on here. Mike |

I can add a little back brake, lock up the tire or anything in between. I burned it on my first ride, even before I singed the papers. (but I knew that I was going to after about 30 seconds after I got out of parking lot) My back wheel and brake rotor seems to get dirty at the same rate as the Uly with Micron exhaust or the Lighting with the stock exhaust. Now I've never gotten off the bike and grabbed the rear brake to check the temperature. The result I guess would depend on just how much I'd been using it. But I think I might try that. I'll bet it will be cold. |

I burned my back brake in early on and have no problem locking it up if I want to. However, my mornings are cold and the exhaust hitting the axle and disc, condense a LOT of water and a tiny bit of oil. First 2 or 3 applications of the rear brake are useless each morning. If you want a rear brake, you have to USE it. Don't try it once and say it's crap, because the first few times ARE crap. Broken-in and kept clean, you can burn a flat-spot on the tire in no time. Not sure why some say the rear brake is useless. Mine will lock-up the backend in a heart beat. If anything it may be a little too good. Definitely much stronger the the ole XB. When I first picked up the bike the rear brake was weak as well. After doing some pad bedding-in exercises, it become much stronger. I think as others have mentioned, proper breakin in is the key. |

i havent tried to lock mine up, but it works ok from what i can tell this might sound dumb - but why are people ocmplaining that the exhaust might get the brakes too hot? i mean, feel the exhaust as it leaves the muffler. ok now do some braking and feel your rotors. ok. now which is hotter? the exhaust really isnt that hot, id say its easy to say a 100* day would be harsher on the brakes than the exhaust. also - keep in mind, buell spent a lot of time on this thing, i think theyd know better than to do something that'll make the bike dangerous (besides all of that torque lol) |

After owning 5 Buells and Umteen bazillion other bikes I would say weak rear brakes are a Buell trademark they think the rear brakes are evil and will kill you. They are far less powerful as most bikes I have owned. I have asked the service departments many times and was told the bike was in factory spec. As Garrett2 said, Buell don't make mistakes, so its us thats mistaken. |

whoa whoa whoa, im not saying they dont make mistakes, but i doubt they'd overlook this sort of thing when developing the bike |

I race for liberty buell, and have even raced daytona and no rear brakes at all. The point is in my mind if they didn't work I wouldn't miss them |

Thanks Mutation racer you just answered one of my questions I posted else were, it was about using the rear brake when racing and I assumed that the rear brake was not used in racing just down shifting with front braking, I also would like to know about a few guys have posted jumping gears when down shifting like from 5th to 2cnd skipping 4th and 3rd is this a racing trick? I do know if I was cruising in 5th or 6th and needed quick acceleration I would jump of few gears down and nail it, but I think if racing and coming into a corner I would not skip gears but just downshift so I am in the right gear for exit, I have no training and just trying to prepare myself for race school. I'm not concerned about the heat on the brake from the exhaust. I definitely see a lot of water condensing on the cold parts, particularly the disc, that are in the cloud at startup. This will cease to be a problem, for me, soon as nothing condenses on warm parts. No big-deal, I just use the rear brake lightly a couple of times as I'm leaving the neighborhood and it works fine for the rest of the ride. Z |

For me the back brakes are to keep the bike in place when I'm stopped at a light on a hill. It gives me to chance to sit up and stretch on long lights. dave (Message edited by cmonkey on March 20, 2008) (Message edited by cmonkey on March 20, 2008) |

Dave I am thinking of going to penguin racing school they are based in Mass were I live and teach at Loudon race way which for me is around 60 miles away, I am not sure if I should take the ARC course first and should wait to my son can do it with me, I really want to get on a track and the quickest way is Penguin racing school, My son want to go but I know he is not ready for anything near this, even the ARC course wants you to have ridden for a year or more, he is a newbie and want him to take the advance riding school and go from there, he is not like me and is cautious, I was crazy growing up and could ride allot better then I can now, I just want to have fun and the street is not the place with this bike, Penguin racing school has a two day course in june and think this might be a good time for going. Mike: Sign your son up for Keith Code's school. He is ready for it. Code is a riding school, Penguin is a racing school. |

I've never ridden a Buell I could not lock the rear brake up on. Unless it had a non-fuctioning rear brake. I did have mine go out once and even though I don't use it much it was distracting to have it not working. Of course. . . I haven't ridden that many Buells.

Court my son just started riding in november and you think he can do this superbike school, I was planning on going to penguin school then do Keith codes school at the end of the summer fall, I would love to see my son race but do not know if he is ready for this but I am no expert on learning how to ride I tought myself in the dirt. Mike: I did the keith code school and it's worth every penny. Everything I learned there I can apply to everyday riding. Even if you or your son don't take the KC Class, get the dvd and the book 'twist of the wrist'. I've been riding for years, and to see the physics of riding and cornering explained was an eye opener. In going through that book, I realized I was an accident waiting to happen. When I went to the class, I was excited and ready to drag my knee around the course. The class was definitely an eye opener! no kneedragging in the beginner class. Dave |

Thanks Dave I will get the dvd because getting my son to read will be a challenge, I do not know which school I am going to start with but I do know I do not know it all and want to, I want to get on the track the fastest way is to do Penguin race school and then I think in the fall I will take Keith Code's class before going to the dragon in the fall, I am hoping that both my son and I learn allot and if I was going to race it would be the single cylinder class, I think it is the cheapest way to racing and can find the parts on ebay, I also got a buell blast that I am rebuilding so I will see were that takes me, first things first and getting the bikes safe and make sure my son takes a advance riding course or more, I will get the dvd and go from there. |
