I'm looking for honest (really) feedback with respect to recommended/required mods applicable to Buells. I have a Sportster and it seems I have spent as much on engine and other performance mods as I spent on the bike when I bought it. I am interested in a Ulysses. My understanding is that the Ulysses shares the XB engine now used on the 1200 Sporties. Should I expect to have to do similar upgrades to a Buell that are being done to the newer Sporties? Be brutally honest. I'm not really looking to shell out $11k just to have to spend another couple of grand to get it to run decent. Thanks in advance for your honesty. |

Two completely different engines. The power of the Buell engine is light years ahead of the sportster mill. You wont have to put much of anything in to the bike unless you want to. Enough power right out of the box. If you havent gotten a test ride get down to your dealer and jump on one. |

Thanks. I rode a new 06 a couple of months ago along with a V-Strom, Tiger, and Bandit. I really liked the Tiger and the Ulysses. I think I'm ready to pull the trigger on one of the two. I like my HD dealer which is why I'm really researching the Uly. Thanks again. |

Short Answer: Stock 2008 1200 Sportster = 73 horsepower Stock 2008 1200 Ulysses = 103 horsepower Long Answer: Many would recommend getting an aftermarket exhaust, opening up the air box, and adjusting the ECM in order to really open up the motor, but from the factory it still will put the Sporty in a box as far as performance goes. |

Thanks Mike. Are you sure that the 103 is at the rear wheels? |

no that's crank HP, probably ~85 HP at the rear wheel stock. |

I bet it Sucks to have spent all that money on a new bike to find ot you had you spend even more to maybe match the stock power of a Buell. |

Yeah. I was pretty disappointed when I bought my Sporty 5 years ago. It took some $$ to get it where it is today. If the 85 number for the Uly is accurate, my bike trumps the stock #. I like the Uly though. It's either that or a Tiger. Thanks |

Two completely different engines. Hammer, gotta disagree with you here. The new Sporter's engine differs only in compression, cam profile and intake/exhaust design. I owned one, and the power of my Buell isn't light years ahead. After a Supertrapp exhaust and a new aircleaner and rejet (mine was a carb'd '04), I was making 78hp at the rear wheel, which isn't that far off from an XB. I would have been at 80 easy with the aftermarket ECM to raise the redline - this was with nothing more than an intake and exhaust change. Both engines are proving to be just as cold blooded as the other, and I love it, lol. What the XB has that the new Sporty doesn't is 150lbs less weight. I think that's where most of the performance difference is made. |

Ok so I may stand corrected, compared to my 95 Sporty it was light years ahead. Mind you though with the same type of mods on a 12 engine the hp would be in the mid to high 90's |

Terp - remind me when you come in and we'll pull the baseline dyno for the bike you're going to ride. It's all cleaned up and charged up...ready to go |

Hammer - yeah, the pre-04 bikes were a bit slower than the '04+. '04 got the XB heads and fly wheels, etc, so power was WAY up. I've done intake an exhaust on my XB, and while I don't have the Dyno sheeet in front of me, I know I'm not breaking 90hp at the wheel (according to Liberty's dyno). However - this guy has done heads and cams and the whole nine on his sporty - do that to an XB and you can be in 115hp territory. |

Well, curiosity got the best of me. This 07 baselined (SAE correction on a Dynojet) 89.38hp and 73.51tq. I love the power curve - it's a 45 degree line pretty much straight from 25hp/2200rpm up to 89hp/6700rpm. |

The XB also gives you that without the associated hernia I get riding my rigid. My bike has the Thunderstorm conversion. It is bad ass but kills you on longer rides. |

Ratbuell, Is that for the 1200 Sporty or the Uly? |

Probably the Uly and probably the exact bike I am considering. (Message edited by terp84alum on March 18, 2008) |

165. I can't ride just yet as I'm still recovering from my SLAP tear surgery. I am heading down your way shortly to see if my heads are back. Also, you never emailed me the pics of your wife's Sporty. |

Bah. Must have bounced, I'll resend the pics tonight The Uly is all nice and shiny in the showroom for you...and the battery has electricity in it now, too! Guess I'll just have to ride it for you then.... |
