Bike will not receive power because of the electrical, every time i turn the key it blows a fuse. Anyone have any ideas, the wiring has been totally checked out. Buell XB9 |

I was blowing my key switch fuse and my ign fuse sporadicly. I found two nicked wires directly below the fuse box. One was ign and the other was the key swtch wire. Since taping it up with electrician's tape and moving it a bit so it wasn't pinched under the fuse box anymore I have had zero problems. Another notorious spot for chaffing wires is right at the steering stem. I had a chaffed one there the very day I bought the bike. Electrical problems are the very worse because they're such a pain in the arse to find. I'd go through the wiring with a fine tooth comb. First look under the fuse box then check at the steering stem as these are the most likely places. After that (if unsuccessful) you'll need to dig through the harness. Been there, done that. Very frustrating. But.. Once the problem is found and fixed you will be so happy. On Edit: I know you said the wiring was checked out but mine was too by a dealer that some how wern't able to find any bad wires. Translation: Minmal search. They obviously didn't bother to pop the fuse box up and have a look see. It doesn't require tools and takes a second so I can't explain why they would ignore that spot. Ironicly, that is exactly where I found my problem. The place the dealer didn't check (Message edited by metalstorm on March 14, 2008) Second Edit: The dealer that did the looking is not the same dealer on my profile. This was all at an unamed dealer in San Francisco long before I found a dealer (closer to home even) that cared about Buells. (Message edited by metalstorm on March 14, 2008) |

My 2003 XB9R had a problem like that a few years back. I was riding one day and the bike just completely died, I found the ignition fuse had blown, replaced it, turned on the ignition and it would blow the fuse again. I did all the wiring checks and wiggled wires and went through 5 more fuses all with the same blown fuse result. I read here on the board someone else had the same problem and it was caused by the speedo sensor, I disconnected my speedo sensor and the blown fuse problem stopped, I replaced the sensor and all is well. The sensor did not give any indication that is was going bad, just that one day everything died. It's easy to disconnect to see if you have the same problem as I had, takes less than 5 minutes. |
