Air leak on the intake manifolds.

Blocked fuel/faulty fuel pump.

how in the world does a leak in the intake manifold cause a backfire? I am having a similar problem with my 99X1 and recently heard that problem. I just don't get how the part that lets air mix with the fuel, a leak in a gasket, i am guessing, would cause the problem.

When the engine runs lean it tends to get hotter. Also a lean mixture ignites easier than a rich mixture so what may be happening is preignition due to the lean mixture. This can be caused by letting too much air in eg a leaking intake manifold rubber gasket or the injectors not injecting enough fuel blockage or not enough fuel.
