The Aussie National Rugby League Season starts tonight.

Similar game to yours - but played at fast forward.

you can only lateral - the only way the ball can be promoted is kick it or run with it - and the clock - or play - rarely stops.

Instead of a 'snap' you have a play the ball. Each team is allowed 6 tackles - or downs - and then they kick. But you can catch your own kick and it's play on.

Simple huh.

I played Rugby a few times. It was too much fun. Had little idea of what I was doing. Managed to score a touch. I was my own biggest hero there for a minute.

The beer drenched celebration after was even better. : ]

One of the best things about Rugby is that you have to actually touch the ball down to the ground in the end zone to score a "touch-down", or "touch" for short, none of that "breaking the plane" foolishness.

Some Aussie Kultcha:

In the Eastern states of Aus and Maori NZ the main game is 'Rugby League', this has different rules to 'Rugby Union'.

League was the breakaway professional code and Rugby Union was more Old World European.

Kinda like the NBA and CBA or the leagues that were amalgamated to form the NFL.

But when the Rugby Leage went its own way they changed the rules and have never re-joined.

'Rugby Union' is played in more countries worldwide that 'Rugby League'.

They are two quite different games and playing styles - although many players successfully switch codes.

'Rugby league' is only really popular in the Eastern states of AUS, the North of Britain and with many of the Maori folk in NZ.

Rugby Union is played far more widely.

I don't like it much - it's rare that anyone is a fan of both and the arguments can be quite heated. I much prefer the League.

This is quite handy living in NZ where 'Union' and the All Blacks are a religion. I just go 'whatever'

In the Southern and Western States of Aus they play a different game altogether.

"Australian Rules' Football - the AFL - is more popular than either Rugby code on the continent.

Aussie Rules is Geallic football played with an egg shaped ball on an enormous oval. Approx 3 times the area of a NFL field.

It's a game of punting the ball as far as you can and high catching or 'Marks'. If you mark the ball you get a free kick.

Beautiful game - rugby folk call it 'cross country basketball'.

'Cept you can tackle!

I was pretty good at it till it stuffed my knees.
