Think I might have found a good deal for a solid project car. Just need your input on the value of the car before I trade for it.

1972 Cutlass Convertible
Supposed to be all original with a clean title
92585 miles
350 rocket with 350 trans
Console shifter bucket seats
Drop top works good and is in newer condition
slight pecking noise due to stuck lifter??
very little rust on bottom sides of car, with the most prominent being the hood and trunk lid.
Original Rims!! Also have original chrome Cutlass symbols never placed on fenders.
Red paint, black top

With the current market in trouble what is the quick sale value that if I traded for the car and needed to sell quickly what your be that price?

Any tips on what to look for when inspecting the car?

Look on the inside of all the fenders for rust, have attention to detail here, inside of the trunk and under the hood as well.

most anything is pretty cheap to repair on those kinda cars as long as you gotta good solid body.

know how to use a nickel to find bondo???

Wes what is a good deal??? I've had a few Olds. And know my way around them pretty good. Cutlass's like to rust at bottom of the fenders where they meet the doors. Another place is before after the rear wheel well's.Look in the trunk at the rear quarters. It will most likely take some of the trunk floor with it. Bottom of the doors. They my not look like it from the outside but open the door and look at the bottom's.They have rubber plugs for drain that the factory put in. Funny why they kept them plugged. What year is it??? Rag Top's are worth more but certain years are worth little more. Gotta pic

72 is a tough year, it really is considered the death knell for muscle cars. The styling wasnt dead until 74, but 72 for the crowd that wants numbers matching knows that is not the year to get. Emissions sucked the life and performance out of the stock motor. Now if you push the block to new with show chrome yadda yadda then that negates a bit of that. Good luck. Book mark Year One now, you will be there often. +1 for the convertible though

Actually specs wise with Oldsmobile the 71 was the same other then tail lights and front grill. And they were interchangeable.

'70 was the last year of the federally unmolested (i.e. high-compression) engines.

Last year of 10.5:1. Although the next two years did ok in HP department. But 70 was the year to remember fro all automakers. It kinda when they all made their best.

On a convertible the first thing I want to see is the floor pans. Lift up the carpet and pads and have a look.

You really can't do that,that easy on a olds anyway. Best to get under the car and look at the floor boards

Back seat bottom should be easy to do, push and lift, no tools. That would allow seeing under it and the rear foot wells.

"frame is solid and so is the trunk and floor pans. The transmission and brakes need work as well, it works in the reverse but the forward gears don't work and the brakes need to be cleaned and bled out. I changed all the oils in the car and starts up really easy, but it has a pecking noise because of a stuck lifter."

YEAR ONE has all those steel replacement parts for trunk, fenders, and hood. They aint cheap, but they should have them. Roll a magnet ball over the body. Filler is a biatch, the ball will drop. A friend of mine was looking ta a 66 MUSTANG, The entire rear fender was bondo, over duct tape and chicken wire. Git-R-Dumb. ;)

1972 was the last year before EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) on GM vehicles. It was 1972 and 1973 that's really separates the performance eras. 71 and 72 weren't so bad when you take into consideration that GM started rating engines by net HP instead of gross HP. Advertised horsepower would have fallen regardless of the lowered compression or not just because of the way they rated HP. 1970 is a convenient year because of the decade change, but high compression engines were still available from Mopar in 1971. The 1971 and 1972 Corvette and Z/28 could still be had with all the goodies, just not the compression.

1973... now that was a hit. But even that year had it's highlights with the SD455 Pontiac... a real racing engine in GM car in 1973 (and 1974, btw).

How audacious.

Do you want as a car to drive or to try to turn a buck? Last year I sold a 68 442 hardtop that needed a total restoraion for 3500.Also have a 66 cutless covertitable that needs restoreing.NOT FOR SALE.Bad thing is a olds, buick or pontiac cost as much to restore as a chevy but is only worth half as much at selling time. If you plan on keeping it go for it. A friend at work sold a 70 cutless with a 350 not a show car but a nice daily driver for 5500.I like olds and pontiacs better than chevys but hey I also ride a Buell. I like being diffrent.Hey even my rifles are odd calibers 2506, 300H&H mag, 45/70, British 303. Also have a 67 firebird with 427 chevy engine.

The Firebird had the chevy engine in it when I bought it. Up intill this year it was a land speed record holder at maxton. 4 speed 2.56 rear end. 90 mph in first gear. Shifted into 4th at 139 mph. had a record at 142+mph barely in 4th. The engine is now sick but when I get it back on the road it will have a 3.42 rear. the car is street driven.

Unless it's a '66 Acadian Canso Sport Deluxe with and L79 350hp 327...from the factory. The rarest of all L79 cars. My dad had one, then rolled it....argh...celebrating the day I was born. LOL

I saw a few of the Acadians back in the late 70s at car craft street machine nationals in Indy. Most people dont know pontiac built a nova clone back then for Canada, 66 and 67. They were nice but a diffrent front end.I have some pics some where but no scanner.

Just for sh#ts and giggles I tryed to run it at a local 1/8 drag strip with street tires NOT good. 10.50s at 89 mph in first. I did do a couple of 1/8 mile burn outs crowd went wild.I have ripped a drive shaft into in the middle. Droping the clutch at 6000 while rolling at 20 mph.I usely shifted between 6500 and 7000.Put 50,000miles on the street with this engine. It dynoed 550 at the flywheel. It was a dayley driver 4 years .

The bird now has a 8 point rollcage, fuel cell,On board halon fire ex. and full door net.I did have nitrous on it but never used it. As I ran in gas class. Back in 1980 I put nitrous on my 442. No one knew what it was back then. Had the fastest daily driven street car in the county at the time.It never lost a street race.

The 442 had a 400 olds with crane cam, edelbrock intake, 850 dp holly, headers,msd ignion and made 350 hp at realwheels wo nitrous. Now days that is nothing but in 1980 it was bad.

The thing has so much rust on that trunk lid lip area, I would hate to see the under side of the car. That car should be about $2,500, no more. I would not even consider that car, there are too many clasic cars out there these days for sale to have to buy one that is that bad for that much money.

Dont buy it. To much rust, there is 5500 dollars of body work to do on that car! You can find a way better deal on something more solid than that car. Did you run the numbers on that engine to see if it was actually on rocket motor and a #s matching car?

I can tell that the motor was painted. Thats not the orginal blue that they put on 71-72 olds and newer. I have to agree you have alot of work and money to throw at that car. But if its a task you think you'd like to do go for it.

That would have to be the car that I really wanted to spend a lot of time with. I can't see offering more than $3,000 tops. That is a lot of money and time sitting there.

I had a pear white 68 GTO with a 455 in it. My old man wouldn't allow me to get the Holly 4 barrel though! I sold it for college tuition.
