Need a little help, on my way to work this morning I heard a sudden pop and then a very loud exhaust/engine noise and there was a fair amount of a fuel smell. So my conclusion is something blew out, something in the intake or a spark plug or something. Anybody had anything like this happen before? So it seems to be up top, and since I am now stuck at work I guess I will try to take the airbox off to see if I can see anything. I have never pulled the airbox all the way out myself, doesn't look that hard, but a little unsure of myself. I see the 4 screws, how do you take off the boot the goes to the throttle body, do you just pull it off or do you leave it on and pull the cover off around it. Any help would be great so I can see if I can get her running to have a ride home. By the way it is an '04 XB12S. | ||

Maybe just a backfire and stumble, and could have lead to a fouled plug. I would start it and try to drive it before I took it apart. I have had this happen before, and after the backfire cleared from the intake area it was ok. | ||

I'm sorry, but lemme get this straight? It made its little cough/snap/pop sound from up close to the airbox or around the sides of the bike? then the muffler backfire and the bike stalled? If it stalled and will not start I would think that something bad is afoot, but if you havent tried to start it I would give her a couple cranks, hoping that she doesnt make anymore funny noises, I wouldnt worry. I have this happen when I am in a hurry and dont let the bike FULLY warm up and try to leave on it. And just saying, not pointing fingers at anyone, if it does backfire, chopping the throttle fast and deep wont clear the gunk or help the mix. Just hold on her steady after its started, not at like 5k or anything, but like 2-3k, in short duration. hopefully you can ride home today. bad gas? battery terminals? check that wire harness. I may not have explained the severity of the noise, it sounded like someone blew a hole in the head & didn't run well after that (at all). I was just lucky I was only 1/2 a block from work when it happened, could have been worse, could have happened in the middle of my 10 mile commute. Well, I work at a Ford truck shop and the shop foreman rides a xb12x, so we dug into it with a fair amount of confidence. I was right, there was a hole in the head...or more specifically it spit out the front spark plug. From what we can see all the threads seem ok, so I'm going to try and put it back in at lunch and hope it works. Wish me luck. | ||

Running the Buell race/performance plugs, installed by the dealer at last service. Guess it just worked itself loose...until I get in there fully I won't know what the deal is. | ||

Suck, dude. I blew a spark plug on a 1975 VW Beetle. I know what that noise sounds like. Luckily it was the front cylinder head. | ||

I thought it was lucky too, but the plug doesn't seem to want to go back in, I think the head is messed up. Off to the shop it goes under it's extended warranty. | ||

I'm betting the threads are ate out. It rattled alot before it came out. I've seen this on another Buell with the Buell race plugs, front cylinder, too. Hmmmmm. | ||

I'd think faulty installation would be a far more likely culprit than something being wrong with the plug itself. For every one example like this you'll find, I'm sure there are hundreds of others with no issues. I've been running the Pro Series plugs for over 16000 miles without an issue...speaking of which, I should probably change those... | ||
