see the derby clutch cover is vented? does this present any problems, i know it wont leak because the gasket is around the center. would this cause a hazard of dirt getting in there, i didnt bother looking to see what was in there when i changed mine. would it have a better cooling effect for the clutch?

The 1987 GSXR 750 Limited Edition had a dry clutch with a vented cover like that that was supposed to help keep it cool.

Some recent Ducatis also ran a dry clutch and vented covers for the same reason.

However, unless the clutch is run dry, I can't see how that makes sense.

Agreed. It's bling and I kind of like it but I would expect that dirt would get in and, if there is oil in the primary, it would make the equivalent of grinding paste resulting in faster primary chain wear.

The reason the Suzuki and Ducatis worked is that there was no primary chain. Those bikes have primary drive via gears instead of chains.

Now, if the primary chain could be replaced with a belt and run in a dry case or if the chain could be periodically lubed and then run in a dry case, it might be just fine.

It does look cool though and I am not going to do it either.

Its an optical illusion. There is a black plate (that encloses the primary) behind the cover. Nothing will get in or out of the primary. Harley makes a similar one for their bikes too.

yeah, the only part of the derby cover that seals the primary is about a 2 in circle in the middle of the cover..... so anybody could do that to a stock cover...

if it truly is vented to let air into the primary chamber cover in order to cool the clutch, i believe oil would have the ability to come out

i did that,at first just put holes in it,but at a buell meet saw someone else had done it so attacked it again now it is cut just outside of the oil seal with the 4 mounting points cut around,so it looks like a circle with 4 evenly spaced mounting points sticking out,looks better,more modern and saves 88gm,and no it does not leak oil,take a look at limitedx1,s pic,its cut outside of the oil seal.

I suspect it is just an illusion. If it were vented, dirt and debris would enter and oil would escape.

Unless it is a dry clutch.

it is not venting anything except the outside of the primary cover. it is however cut to save weight(?).

You could pee more than the weight you'd save. It'll make your wallet lighter, though.

I still like it. Now I might do it. My cover is all scraped up from Wolf Pen damage anyway.

A good friend of mine said other than the center o-ring seal for the clutch there is nothing inside the cover there. so i found an old one in his shop and im going to take the power tools to it!!!! i love cutting stuff off and not having to put it back on, lol

Limited, I went to the local H/D shop and picked up this one in the sportster isle and drilled it myself. Best to have an extra on hand in case you don't like how it looks or make a mistake. Oring resides where the circled outline is so no chance of leaks.

doesnt look like it would bolt up to the original tuber cam cover holes, but im sure it could be done with different brackets from them. i would email them, that kit is way bad @$$.

i picked up and extra derby cover and im gonna start cuttin here soon. i plan on removing all material between bolt holes to make a cross pattern.

hey limitedx1,thats what i have done to mine,it did look like buellfighters to start with,i highly recommend you try it first on an old cover,i did and was glad i did,getting the sides parallel and square to the mounting hole was not as easy as i first thought,even though i measured twice i still had to cut twice,the plan was to hacksaw then file,hacksawing went ok but i ended up using a small anglegrinder,when you cut next to the mounting holes cut well outside your marks,i held it in a vice with wood,do the vice up enough to hold it and no more as it is not the strongest piece of metal,am pleased with the result but so glad i tried it first on an old cover,it just needs the edges polishing smooth now,
