Hey guys. I have an 01 Jetta Diesel that I have had for about 3 years now. love the car!! it has some various mods to get better power. and gets about 45 mpg highway and 39 city. But as the price of diesel keeps going higher and higher I find myself wanting to switch to fry grease. I'm just curious of anyones thoughts on that here on BadWeB. I have done lots of research and know what is needed and already began getting the equipment ready. Found a few online message boards related to it, which are very helpful. anyone on here run fry grease? :-) I'm curious to hear???????? | ||

I used to work at a place that used barrels and barrels of HOSO. High Oleic Sunflower Oil. Much more pure than just fry grease or vegetable oil, had a trucking co. owner stop and pick it up for his tractor trailers every month or so. If you can find a place that does any mixing or processing that uses it you might be able to pick it up by the drum. Just a thought. | ||

I know a guy in CT, who has done several TDI SVO conversions. PM me if you want his email address. All things considered it's a fairly simple process. My wife has an '03 Jetta TDI and I'm always thinking about the conversion. It is a little more problematic up here in the NE with the colder winters. | ||

You may have already read this, but I saw it on a show on either the Discovery or Nat Geo channel. The best way to get free grease is to hit up Chinese restarants and local mom and pop joints. They find it easier to have you take the grease away for free then to charge someone to do it. | ||

I go to two different bus garages that both cook fry grease and run it in both cars and buses. They collect old cooking grease from restaraunts. The only problem I see with it is if the EPA types from you city/state find out about what you are doing, you may have to install some spill equipment, such as a resevoir around the manufacturing area and absorbant mats and such. The only thing that scares me is the methanol, but I'm scared of my own shadow. | ||

Well, luckily enough I have a good friend who has a good friend who manages a Pei Wei. So fingers crossed she can hook it up! I have five 55 gallon barrels ready to be filled :-) I also have two real good friends who both have older Benz diesels and are awaiting my further findings to swap there cars over too. | ||

Rah- I have an F250SD that drinks diesel like I drink beer at March Badness. I'm getting ready to start making bio-diesel There is a guy around here running straight veggie oil with zero issues. Smells good too. Good luck. Hopefully I won't blow myself up. | ||

Well oil almost hit $110.00 a barrel today so Im thinkin a lard powered truck might be the shit in short order..heh... If oil keeps goin up, fat people wont be safe as the less scruplious bio burners will be meltin them down.... | ||

Home-brew biodiesel is looking better all the time. Diesel here in SC is ~60 cents/gallon higher than regular at present. Of course, last summer it was 20 or 30 cents/gallon cheaper. Hopefully the price will come back down when the weather warms up. | ||

I don't know where you guys are located but here in the Midwest most restaurants have their grease recycled to save money. | ||

Well most places have to pay for someone to haul off there grease and clean there grease traps. So lots of places will gladly give it to you for free, as it cuts there overall costs. I thought about bio-diesel, but it takes soo much more to make it then veggy oils do. plus i'm in Texas, it doesnt get that cold here, so I can just add a few extra heaters and keep the grease warm during the colder months. I paid $3.91 for diesel yesterday!! way too much in my book! and I doubt it will ever go back down under $3 in my lifetime! Well until I start the veggy thing :-) then it should be under $1.50 / gallon after I add up the cost of filters and containers and such. | ||

Yes, you have to pay a fuel tax on every gallon you process if you run it in a motor vehicle, and they're dead serious about receiving their revenues. Food for thought. YMMV. | ||

Can't you just filter the fry grease and run it as is? I seen them do it to a Desil Benz on Mythbusters with no mods to the grease or Benz.... | ||

Johnny, If you install a heated holding tank, use engine coolant through jacketed lines and jacketed tank, the northern climates are not a factor. If you can leave your car running even overnight you would never have frozen veggie oil or a cold car in the morning. There are companies in the US that make conversions so you can run petrol diesel till the car warms and switches to veggie oil when the car is warm enough. The down side is YOU must remember to switch it back just a few minutes before parking the car. If you don't you end up with veggie oil in the fuel system at start up. I'll try to find the links when I get the chance this evening. | ||

Old diesel Mercs (sorry Benz's to you) will run on just about any light oil with no mods, just make sure it's well filtered before use. If you live in a residential area & want to do this unseen in the comfort of your garage, here's what you do. Get a decent 12v DIESEL fuel pump such as a Facet, & a set of filters off an old truck or tractor, (make sure they're off something with readily available cheap canisters) use an old car battery to power the pump, & filter direct from the container into your vehicle. keep an old overall on one side for this specific job, & use old cardboard carton on the floor to absorb spillages because you WILL spill some. Agricultural fuel is tax rebated, so is a fave to use but it's dyed red here & will stain the inside of your tank & filters. We also used to use light heating oil, 55 gal drum of oil & mix in 1 gal of cheapo engine oil to give it enough lubricating properties. Down side is a bit smoky. If you're in a cold climate & your diesel waxes, 10-1 diesel & gas. Used cooking oil works well, but anybody driving behind you thinks you've just bought a bulk order from the chippy! Commercial vehicle (big rig) diesel is absolutely fine to use in any diesel car, if you know any small trucking companies they may do you a deal to buy some from them, as they generally get a better price than you can & also they claim the tax back on it; plus the more they buy the cheaper they get it. Hard up truck drivers may also do you a cash deal, (a decent high capacity hand pump such as a sailboat bilge-pump will aid you here) All these things I have done, not all of them are legal everywhere,or safe, or good for your vehicle, but they're all cheaper than the gas station.
