Howdy folks.. After riding my '07 Uly, which has 8700 miles, for a week in the rain I changed the tranny fluid and found some nice rich creamy goo. I flushed the box with ATF like i learned here on BadWeb, and then changed the Formula + twice just to be sure. But... now the warmer the engine gets the cruchier second gear gets... 1st to 2nd feels and sounds fine for a few miles but then gets worse and worse. It never fails to go into gear or out. just feels and sounds really bad.. No metal on the drain plug, thankfully. Is this good, bad or just normal ? |

Did you adjust the primary chain tension and clutch all together (and by the book)? That makes a huge difference.... |

Crunchy sounds from the trans are not normal. The buel/sportster trans are pretty strong and rarely give problems. If the noise is only in second gear one possibility is the snap in bearing on the countershaft that it rides on. Here is a pic of one from a sporty.
I wish they never did away with the trap door set up. It was so easy to pull the trans out for service. Now the motor has to be pulled and the cases split. You should get it looked at soon, you don't need the trans locking up. |

Excessive primary chain slack can sound like gravel in the primary under certain scenarios, and fine the rest of the time. It's the chain grinding the primary case. It can also cause sloppy engagement and sound crunchy on engagement. The 5th gear drive assembly can also be damaged, and that can make crunchy noises as well. But all in all, especially on the XB's, the trannies have been pretty darn solid. |

Thank you for all the responses. I did adjust the clutch and primary chain at the same time as the fluid flush, so I'll get the manual out again and check them both Thanks again. BTW. I'm liking the Uly so much im gonna sell my Ducati. Anyone need a rip roaring '94 900ss with all the go fast modifications?? Its a wonderful bike, but the Buell is just as fast, more comfortable, and, I cant believe im saying this, Handles better. |

Desmo900, You probably know already, but make sure to check that primary chain slack in a lot of places to find the tightest spot to measure. The amount of slack will be very different in many places. (Message edited by dentguy on March 11, 2008) |

Fluid level has a bigger effect then I can explain as well. I can observe it, but not explain it. |

Well i solved my crunchy second gear problem. My new boots were the culprit. I had some boots made for me by Z-custom leathers and the toe is much softer than my old boots. so when I was shifting the leather would ease the shift lever just a bit out of gear, then my toe takes up the slack in the boot and I more firmly finish the shift. Who'd a thunk it. |
