Dirtbeard, ... What did you fuck up?

Well, sense you asked....

Just the other month I installed a $200 chin fairing on my Y2K M2 and it looks good! It was a little bit expensive, but it looks good. We all understand that looks are everything don't we? I mean, I could have gotten a Dyno tune-up or bought a tail bag or something, but looks are everything right?

Installing a chin fairing requires that you install the shift lever with a new bolt and a new set of spacers. Actually, two new bolts and two new sets of spacers.

Same story, second chapter.

Sometime in the past, the bike started to leak oil from the place where the shift lever sticks out of the engine case and I wanted to replace the oil seal. AND the front muffler mounting bracket vibrated itself into three pieces.

Somehow this seemed like a good time to take it all apart and repair everything at once. While I was at it, why don't I just switch over to Mobil 1 synthetic oil too?

I took the left side engine case off, replaced the oil seal around the shift lever and the primary case gasket and bolted most of it back together.

The front muffler bracket didn't arrive in the mail for a couple of days so work was halted.

Two days later I installed the front muffler bracket. The chin fairing went back on with the two last bolts and Mobil 1 gear lube went in the primary case. So far, so good.

Same story, chapter three.

I went out for a 200 mile ride around Mt. Rainier on Friday night. By way of Enumclaw, then Cayuse Pass, Paradise, Longmire, and home via Highway Seven to Spanaway and Tacoma.

I'm wasn’t very happy with the way my bike was shifting. I mean, I thought this Mobil 1 stuff was supposed to make things better? By the time I get to Spanaway (165 miles) I'm really unhappy. Hey, the shifting is getting worse. WTF! I look down and see the shifter bolt is just about to fall out.

I rode the last 35 miles in third gear with my left heel pressed against the head of the pivot bolt so I wouldn't loose the bolt and the spacers or any other parts. It seems that I forgot to use Loctite on the two bolts that hold the chin fairing and the shift lever on.

Most of the oil in the primary case dripped out and made a big mess on everything south of the shift lever. Damn! That means slick tires, a dirty swing arm, dirty muffler, empty primary case, bad shifting, sore leg. Damn, Damn, Damn.

Chapter four.

When I got home I removed the muffler AGAIN (and you all know what a pain that is). I reinstalled the two bolts with LOTS of Loctite, drained the primary case of whatever was left of the $7.00 per quart Mobil-1 gear oil and started all over. Another $7.00 worth of gear oil, $67.50 worth of paper towels to clean up the mess and I still don't know if I really fixed the hard shifting problem or not. I guess I’ll know tomorrow when I test ride the darn thing.

The only thing that keeps me sane is that I’m not really sure if the nice folks at (Fill In The Blank) HD dealer would have done a better job of repairing my bike. Mistakes happen, do-do occurs, yada, yada, yada. No real harm was done and if it’s all OK now I’ll be a happy camper, but I hate the idea of spending $200 just to have screwed up my bike. I could have gone without the chin fairing, kept the old bolts and installation procedure, and saved myself a lot of time, trouble and money.

On the other hand, my cousin Lloyd is still in Harborview Hospital and would gladly spend a few hundred dollars for a motorcycle accessory he didn’t use to gain back his good health.

Things could be worse. Praise the Lord for the good things we have and don't worry about what we don't have! Don't sweat the small stuff and remember that it's ALL small stuff.

RAY2K!!! er, DIRTBEARD! You DON'T use Mobile 1 gear-goop in our tranny's. Just the regular Mobile 1 V-Twin mix. Honest! I have the printed info here if you would like to paruse it. They say Mobile 1 V-twin was designed with our shared primary-tranny system in mind!
Let me know if you find any V-twin oil available. I went down to the Wal-Mart @ the stuper mall where I gots it befor but they don't gots it now! They and Shuck's are SUPPOSED to carry it...

Galen: You might be right about the Mobil 1 75-90 gear goop but the nice folks over in the Knowledge Vault / Lubrication section think differently. My understanding is that the V-Twin stuff is motor oil and would be too thin for use in the primary case.

My info comes from the guy who designed the Mobile 1 20-50 V-twin oil, Chuck Goldman. Him say his goo is good for both holes!

Did you run the Harley goop through your pinkies when you were changing it? I did when I went to the Mobile stuff. VERY similar in viscosity while being rubbed between my fingers.

I've run it in my Buell for almost a year...

the S3T buell that sliced a deer in half near whistler at about 65 mph.....story was in CDN Biker mag a couple years back.... was a write off and rebuilt to resemble an S1.

amazingly the rider never crashed, managed to pull over and roll to a stop before the bike fell over...

same bike we watched do smiley burnouts at the VanIsle HOG poker run last year...

Roc- Is there a dealer here in town that you can buy salt away? I saw your post on quick board so how are things going with the bike?
Bob, Deb and Matt- thanks for the ride up the canal Sunday had a great time. And the food was good too. Look forward to getting my bike back all freshened up and serviced.
Lonnie- Well it's official I wiped out on the klx110 this weekend. Went for big air (12 inches) got all crossed up and splat on Matt's driveway. Bike took it better than me. Im sore.
Galen- Is your Buell together? I've been pulling for you. I feel your pain. Mike

Mike - I don't know about salt away, I don't think I've ever seen it. If it is a good thing and you find it, let me know.

Things are good with the bike. About 730 miles of break in and I'm starting to feed it some boost, kind of guessing that this is fine. Working with a buddy to build an intercooler, fingers crossed on that one because I'm "a measure once cut three times and then sand it to fit" type of guy. I still have a problem with fuel delivery but will figure it out. Really, I just want to take it out and ride it all crazy like.

Remember Ol' Dirtbeards sad four chapter story from last Sunday about not using Loctite on the shift lever pivot bolt and loosing the oil from the primary case? Not that it was worth remembering, but here's the wrap up. Chapters five, six and seven, as it were.

After I put it all back together I went for my favorite 40 mile loop ride and the bike shifted great, just like a Japanese cruiser. Funny how important having the shift lever solidly attached to the bike is. It smelled a little funny and the tire felt a little slick in left turns but it shifted great. The rear break was a weak but it shifted just fine. I stopped at the end of the ride to fill up and when I finished paying for the gas I found a BIG puddle of really clean oil under the bike. I looked under the bike and found a 4 inch long piece of primary case gasket dangling down from the exact spot where the oil was falling out. Bummer.

Chapter Six.

I striped the chin fairing and muffler off, and then dug into the primary case AGAIN! Replaced the gasket AGAIN! This time I was careful to properly align the gasket before sticking the bolts into their holes. I adjusted the primary chain AGAIN. Reinstalled the chin fairing and muffler AGAIN. Forgot to adjust the clutch so I removed the derby cover AGAIN-AGAIN. Blah blah blah. Filled it up with gear goo AGAIN and went to bed.

Chapter Seven.

I got up and rode the bike to work. It shifted like crap. Rode home and properly adjusted the lever freeplay. A clutch that doesn’t properly disengage shifts poorly it seems. I also diddled and fiddled with the placement of the shifter and the associated mechanism and that made a bigger difference than I thought it would. The bike shifts just fine now and no sign of an oil leak. It might shift even better if I used a lighter weight of oil but I’m not going to mess with a good thing now. Besides, I’ve spent my whole weeks allowance on 75-90W and couldn’t afford to change even if I wanted too.

I really hope this is the end of the story. If it's not fixed now I'm going to buy a Falco.

Ol' Dirtbeard

Roc, what are your jets now? I have a full set 175-205 for the CV-40 if you want to fool around some time. Have the air/fuel guage and O2 sensor as well, but you'd have to put a bung-hole in yur pipe.

Thanks Shotgun. The Aerocharger comes with a 240 main. I told them what I was doing to the motor and they sold me another jet kit that they said would be correct, we shall see. The main in it is just a bit smaller but the kit included another needle that is pretty thin. I ordered a fuel pressure guage from Jeg's today, hope to sort out my fuel system woes with it, and ordered an O2 sensor set up too - they were on the same page and all. I have a guage that has been modified to read with more accuracy over a smaller range, around WOT, so I should be good there. I think I will need a bigger dash! You mentioned that you liked the guy that welded the bung in your header, who was he and which shop? I will need the same and also another exhaust piece made.

Galen: I’m sorry but I didn’t understand your last post. Did you say that you went home last night, got good and drunk and put Betty down for another five weeks? Lets go for a ride, Dude, I’m tired of just talking to ya. Mt. Rainier is calling us. Gin is good, beer makes me fart

Steve: Thank you for riding with Lyle and me last night. Thanks for not passing us and letting us feel good about ourselves. We don’t very often get to ride in front, it felt nice.
