Actually the best place to get a black center chin piece is out of a rattle can of satin black that's already sitting in your garage or basement workshop. Just clean the grey with Simple green or such like, sand it with some 180 sand paper, prime and let rip with a couple of coats of satin black. Gloss is good too. Matte may be a bit difficult to clean. Play your cards right, and it won't cost you a dime: the official cheapskate way. Looks fine too.

I have heard of people painting the chin piece. But the chin piece i have on there is already pitted and chipped from rocks and various road elements hitting it. And i would want to say that if its painted it would chip and scratch rather easily? |

Dye it black, That way it is black all the way through. I did it to mine and its holding up great. get a big ole' pot that is will fit in and some Ryte (sp?) fabric dye and go to town. |

If you are going to paint with a spray can put on just enough paint to get coverage. Excess film build up will allow for stone chipping. It is best to use a plastics adhesive coat instead of a primer(no film build up, and it is literally a paint "glue" for plastics). |

+1 for painting your own. I used just regular textured flat black paint that can be cleaned with engine bright. works good, doesnt chip.
it matches the rest of the plastic covers now, sweeeeet. looks like the same color as a frame puck too. |

Repainted mine with the xb silver frame paint, and a coat of clear. It's holding up well. Get rid of the rivets, once and for all. You can find the kit at americansportbike.com (Message edited by twig on March 07, 2008) |

Just painted mine tonight as well, with regular Rustoleum gloss black. We'll see how it holds up... |

Can someone tell me what the benefit is of getting rid of the rivets in the chin fairing? I've been trying to figure this out for a while. |

I got rid of the rivets because the center section was not fitted to the bottom correctly - It was cocked and there was a noticeable gap. I had to refit it myself. |

i got rid of the rivets because i swapped out a black center piece on my 9r for a grey one and i didnt want to go through the hassles of trying to rivets back in it. |

I hated the way the original grey plastic would stain up with road grime, so I painted mine with a rattle can of black bedliner. Durable, doesn't chip, and easy to clean. No more road grime stains. |

I believe the XB9sx and the XB12TT come with black molded center chin section from the factory. The Buell web site shows both bikes with the black chin center section. I just ordered the center section for my XB12Scg and it was around $30-$35. Part number is M0698.02A8AMBE The rivets and backing washers are separate if you want to use them. I'm using new rivets and staying with the original design. I thought I read somewhere bolting the sections together was a problem because of the vibration. Looks like some have had success with eliminating the rivets and painting the plastic. I agree the grey is a pain with road grime. I'm looking forward to riding this season with the all black chin piece. Dave |

What are you guys using instead of the rivets? I believe nuts and bolts - whatever size fits in the holes. Likely locknuts of some type.} |

I bought Al's little kit @ American Sport Bike. It came with a thread tap and enough hardware to do both the chin fairing and the ignition cover.
