A big BadWeB "thank you" to Hugh (Whodom) Odom for breaking the news about the following change to Buell's recommended break-in procedures:
Limit engine speeds to no more than 4000 RPM during the first 50 miles and no more than 5000 RPM from 50 miles to 500 miles. After 500 miles, as you wish. Old recommendations were...
During the first 50 miles (80 kilometers), keep the engine speed below 2500 RPM in all gears and do not exceed 50 mph (80 kph). Do not allow the engine to lug. For the first 500 miles (800 kilometers), vary the engine speed and avoid riding at the same speed for long distances. Engine speeds up to 3000 RPM are permissible in any gear after 50 miles (80 kilometers) have accumulated. but Do not exceed 55 mph (89 kph) for the first 50-500 miles (80-800 kilometers). Blake, Sounds like there may have been another jump in QC and manufacturing processes. That's more good news for new Buell's! Brad |

I'm thinking they finally realized and acted upon the fact that the Buell power-curve characteristics being significantly different than the Sportster engine power-curve. |

Here's a scan of the actual pages from my 07 Ulysses owner's manual:

Ouch! This hurts. I got a new 2006 Buell Lightning Long on Friday. I rode it within the old guidelines for 370 miles before having to leave on a business trip (well, with a few minor exceptions with the worst being to 4000rpm for a moment). Now it's sitting there and I can't make use of this info for another week. I guess it won't hurt to limit to 2500rpm for 50 miles, 3000 for the next 320, and 5000 for the next 130. |

Grrrrrrr, I just bought a 08 and followed the service guy's recommendation & the OLD method even though it went against what I thought. The next bike I get, I'm gonna flog it right out of the box. But, even if it's not great, at least if it's a crappy break-in, it's all their fault. |

There's nothing really wrong with the old guidlines. The new ones are just a little more liberal and rider friendly. |

I think these guidelines are poop and only reflect their best interest from a warranty standpoint. My used S1 was likely broke in this way and upon tear down it shows. Poorly seated rings and signs of heavy blow-by. Only 7800 miles. You should always question the source of any information given and what the individual giving the info stands to gain. |

My 09 uly is using oil, a litre per 4,000 k's, with just 10 k on the clock. It was run in as per the manual. Is this excessive oil consumption? Cheers. |

That is at the high end of normal, but it could run like that forever without a problem. And it might not even be actually burning oil... what kind of oil are you using, and what is your exact procedure for measuring and filling the oil? |
