My plan so far is to go. But I do have a 1 year old, so plans are subject to change.

If my wife and daughter go, we will hopefully be staying in a cabin (camping with a 1 year old probably won't work).
If my Wife and daughter don't go, I will be camping at T.W.O.

Thanks for the link Scott! That is a cool looking place.

They are booked for the MBV weekend. But it is starting to look as if Melissa and Shelby are not going to go. So I will be camping.

Hey do you guys get together and ride around town? What roads do you recommend for good day rides in the area? I have a ULY and have been looking for more off/gravel road type riding any recommendations? I have been all around and about the Skyline, Scottsbourgh area and think I must be missing something out there to many fun roads in that area to have done them all.

Rotorhead, I have a cityX, so I don't have any knowlege of off road stuff.
I usually ride in the Paint Rock/Skyline area, and up into Lynchburg

Rotorhead...check out the OHV areas around there...there's a good one on the way to Birmingham...can't recall the name. Also another one that is privately owned up on the tennessee alabama line...if you google it they should both come up. Not much help...but if one of your buddies becomes so enamored with your uly and just has to have one...I've got a sweet 06 for sale...it's down at my dad's outside of Montgomery but he is MORE than willing to trailer it back up to Huntsville...: )

You can check it out under the classifieds buy/sell section here on badweb...

Flyor,
Thanks for the input I'm checking it out!!
I have traveled up to the TN boarder once following the GPS that said there was a road but it turned into a good jeep trail that ended badly for me walking out 8 miles and the bike having to spend the night in the woods. GOODTIMES!!! Adventure riding!!!
I have found the area south west of here at Bankhead Forest to be fun. I did the ATV single track trail this summer when it was "dry" but still found the mud and dumped the bike like 8 times in just under 4 miles and called it quits.
There are a few Uly riders in town but haven't met up with them. I did run into one on the Arsenal at the gas station.

That's awesome rotor...you've taken yours down much crazier stuff than I ever did. i stuck to fireroads when "off road"...but I sure loved the twisties. I think I may have seen you riding around but not sure. I left the huntsville area last September but rode quite a bit up until then.

At MBIV there was some talk from some of the uly guys hitting the off road stuff around there...apparently there's some killer dirt in the area. I never found them last year but maybe you'll have better luck.

Link up with Russ (RATyson) at MBV...he's a good dude...knows Suches well too.

Man, if there was a way to get back for it, I'd be there in a heartbeat!

Scott, I've been working on my transporter.. but so far, everything I try to transport ends up turning inside out. It think I may have my flux capacitor installed backwards. But once I get it perfected, I'll let you know.

Rotorhead, what are you thinking as far as going to MBV? I have been contemplating loading up as much as I can on me and the bike and riding over instead of trailering. I have not yet convinced myself though, as there is VERY little room to put stuff on the bike.
So far, my plan is to head out that Thursday morning, and arriving at TWO around lunch time.

Russ

Are they doing the pre-MB run up to the dragon and back again this year?

If so, you need to drag Rotorhead up for that...he may swear off dirt road all together!!! : )

I am planning on taking the week prior to MBV off work and riding as much as the wife will let me. I have done a few day rides to the dragon and back. Yeah I know that is a haul but I have to ride as much as I can when I get to. I love doing the dragon/ parkway loop.
Is there alot of room at TWO? With the ULY I have plenty of room to load it down for a weekend. I can load the tent sleeping bag and the required gear all in the bags. I want to do MBV but just don't want to show up and be the stranger tagging along on someone elses group. there was a writeup in one of the winter issues of roadrunner mag that had a 4 day ride cloverleaf tour of the area that centered on Helen, GA that I was thinking of riding the north loop up past the dragon for on day that weekend. My wife wants to ride with me one day so we might drop the 3 kids off at the grandparents house near ATL and ride for 1 full day. If you want to team up I think I can talk the wife into hualing some stuff over while we ride?

Last time I went to the dragon I took my father-in and stayed at pumpkin center camp ground. It is a cool place to stay if you do a weekend up there. I dropped my bags off the ULY and rode the loop "neked". It was much more fun and scrapped a peg or two on my ULY but it spooked me a bit knowing how far I was leaning to get my tall bike to turn.

TWO has plenty of camping room, that is for sure. No worries about finding a camping spot.
And you will definitely not be a stranger tagging along at all. Since you have a love for riding.. you will fit in just like you have always been there.
New12r of the 3%ers and a few others are well versed in the dirt rides up in that area I believe, so you can probably get a group together to hit the dusty trails. I know he and Sanchez (also of the 3%ers) ride Ulys too, and will most likely be up for it. Another Suches local, Mountainrider, lives and breaths riding on dirt and pavement. He probably knows how to get from Suches to Tennessee without touching a bit of pavement.

I am going to see how lightly I can pack. I may be able to fit all the necesities in one backpack, and a duffle bag.

What part of Atlanta are the Grandparents in? I grew up in Stone Mountain, and lived in Lawrenceville prior to moving to Huntsville in 2002.

Man Russ...you need to get the transformer beam me up thingy working!!!

I'm starting to get really bummed that I can't make it this year...

The cool thing is the norwegians take a spring/winter holiday around that time...so i'm already planning for it for MBVI...I'd take about a week off to do things properly and that way my dad and i can get some good riding in before, during and after the ride-in. LOL, MBV isn't even in the books yet...

My parents migrated south with older age. they live on the opposite side of ATL near D'ville. Sounds like a great bunch of guys to get to know for the off road stuff but I think I will mount up some street tires for the weekend ( I need new ones anyway). Way too may great roads not to ride them in the north GA area. I figure after some introductions it will be allot of riding during daylight time and normal group camping with great lies and stories from the days ride.

That's about the jist of it...

Oh, and the food is absolutely amazing. The guy that runs the place is either a gourmet chef or has one on-site. Their burger is one of the best I have ever had...

If you partake in the occasional libation post-ride, you'll need to cart it in. TWO is dry...but just down the road in Dalohnega you can purchase beer, etc.

I heard a rumor that they guy that owns TWO was once a head chef at some fancy restaurant in downtown Atlanta.. I have not yet verified that rumor, but I would belive it based on what food I have eaten there.

Thanks for reminding me Scott. I forgot to mention that Suches is dry. I think I have decided to trailer the bike in, so I am going to stock up pre-travel.
Scott, I will use your cooler so you can be there in spirit, how bout that?
There is always next year for you, and as you have probably seen, the years go buy quick nowadays.

I hope to be headed up to MBV from Montgomery. Won't be until Sat. morning but will be tenting it Sat night. Been trying to get up there the last two years but something always comes up. This year I am going to try real hard to make sure the trip is on.

I'm ready to ride!! I'll have new tires thanks to Uncle Sam giving me my money back.

The wife will be with me for 1 maybe 2 days thanks to the G-parents keeping and eye on the kids. I finally get to take the wife to the roads I have been sneeking off to ride. She may not like the dragon much but will love the roads to and from. I look fwd to meeting you all there. I'll be on the ULY with the Alaska tags.
Now that I know the food is good too the wife is all for the trip!!! Bonus for me too!!

Cool!

Did you ride the Uly from Alaska to here? Or did you have it shipped?

I new a guy a long time ago (around 1985) that rode from Alaska to Georgia on a BMW. He took about 6 months to do it. He would stop in different states and work for a few weeks to make some more travelling money (we worked on a framing crew building houses and condos). Sounded like a fun life.

I had it in my trailer when I moved from AK to GA in 2006, but as soon as the roads cleared of snow I got it out and rode. My break-in ride was from Devil's tower to Crazy horse and on to Mt Rushmore. When the Army leaves me in one place long enough I have major plans to do a Key west to Deadhorse ride. I know this summer the Army plans the SW for a few months which will be a ton of fun!!!

Man, you guys are making me jealous!

All this readin' bout MBV and the weather starting to clear up here....and the roads here are all crooked : )...has me wishing I had my bike here!

I got a quote request in with an auto shipping company now...and the local HD shop here says they can help figure out exactly how much the import tax and customs will be. I've been told it's roughly 100% of the purchase price with a little break for it being 2 yrs old.

We'll see if we can swing it. I too have to thank Uncle Sam for helping out by returning a chunk of my cash back to me this year! : )

Given that an 06 Uly sells for about $31K here I think I can make back my shipping costs at a minimum if I bring it over here!

Scott, it is starting to get better, weather wise around here. However, we are supposed to get some nastyness tonight.
As usuall, the severe weather is supposed to get here in the middle of the night.
So, take solice in the fact that you don't have to deal with tornadeees anymore!

You could definitely make your money back if you sell your Uly over there, it sounds like.
And if you do bring it over, you might be able to work something out with SMHD/B for next year to maybe rent a bike for MBVI.

Rotorhead, sounds like to did a riteous (sp?) break in.
I would love to do a long ride some day.. but it will have to be on something other than my CityX... it isn't quite set up for long haul touring.

I went up to Lynchburg yesterday. There was a Ducati Hypermotoard 1100 sitting there... I think there is still a puddle of drool next to where it was parked. MAN I love that bike.

Renting a bike next year sounds like an excellent idea Russ...maybe I can reserve an 1125R now!!!

Still waiting on quotes for the cost of shipping and haven't gotten the exact figures on what the tax/customs is going to run me...plus, if you think Buells are "niche bikes" there, they really are here. I have to weigh all of that into my decision.

Secretly (and if anyone ever tells me wife I'll deny it to my grave : )) I hope that it doesn't sell there or here...then I've kept my promise to sell it, and I get to keep it!!! I think that makes sense : )
