Bought a new virgin header to send out & have it ceramic coated. Looking over the new pipe I see that the two pipes are fused/tacked together (see photo) before the main join. The original header on my Uly is not fused like this and I'm wondering if the new pipe is defective? Are any of yours fused/tacked like this and do you think this will cause trouble due to expansion especially when ceramic coated? Thanks, David ('08 Uly) |

It looks like the pipes may be bent together and just touching. Try gripping the ends that attach to the heads and see if you can spread them with some force from your hands. You may want to test fit them before sending them out for coating to make sure they are not screwed up from shipping. If you have them coated, it looks like the coating will 'bridge' between the pipes where they touch. This will make a bad spot in the coating if you have to spread them to fit. |

Thanks, tried that (to see if the bond was superficial) but they are welded pretty good. I can see some minor metal spatter in the joint (arc welded?). My original pipes expand a bit (when hot) and the space between the pipes closes up so not sure if this would really matter or if it's part of the design. David |

Might be worth a trip to the dealer and take a look at some other '08's. If you get that pipe coated and that joint ever breaks it's going to ruin the job. BTW What did you pay for that pipe? |

I checked my 08 Ulysses and the header is not 'fused'. |

I know you are talking 08, but my 06 was like that. I don't think they are "fused". They just look that way with the coating. (Message edited by dentguy on March 02, 2008) |

Joypipe, is there visible space between your pipes and are they stock? Dentguy, This is a virgin header (right out of the box), no coating on it yet. My intent is to send it out to have it coated. The existing header on my bike has a visible space, I'd say about 1/8" when cold. Like Teeps said if I had this one coated I think that fused point is going to cause me trouble. I'm going to return this one to the dealer and have them order another, hope the next one has a decent gap and is not fused like this one. David ('08 Uly) |

If you are able to that is, special order you know? Maybe after initial installation and some thermal cycles the pipes take a non-contact set. Mine are about 1mm apart at the closest point and that's pretty close. ...but they are welded pretty good. I can see some minor metal spatter in the joint (arc welded?). I don't weld but I don't see that. Also I don't know what is used to finish the stock pipes, perhaps that is what appears to have "welded" the pipes together? |

08uly, What I meant by coating was the factory stuff. Mine had a rough coating from the factory and that made it looked fused. Good luck. |

My '08 has at least 1/16-1/8" between them. |

The dealer was cool... Understood my dilemma. Ordered a second header to see if that would make a difference and that one came in the same way! Pipes touching. I'll be removing my header and having it coated. Mine are separated about 4 to 5 mm when cold and roughly parallel. The ones in the showroom all had gaps. Don't know why the new ones are coming in this way. The dealer said they should not have to be spread apart to be installed. Seems like poor QC. I'll post some pics once I get the coated pipes back. . |

How much to get coated and where are you sending them? How hard is it to rotate the motor? I need to get mine done. So far I think I've addressed most of the heat issues and will install heat shield to the frame when I pull the header. I will test Odies heat blanket this weekend at MBV. |

Are you getting the black or silver coating? |

I'm using Jet-Hot & It's about $180 for the coating I want. Jet-Hot has a shop not far from me in Quakertown, PA so I'll just drop it off. I decided to try something different so I'm going with copper. They explained it's actually the sterling with copper color on top. First time for me (rotating the engine) but looks fairly straight forward following the manual and going to take some pictures along the way. . (Message edited by 08uly on March 27, 2008) |
