Up until recently when I went to the the motorcycle show in Chicago, I had wanted a Honda CBR1000. At the show I fell in love with the Buell XB12S (although I am partial to the blue on the XB9). My friend said to NOT get a buell because they are more costly and need more servicing. Is this true or false? I was at a dealership today and got the impression that it is a false statement. I would like some input please. |

not only false, but very false. Two things come to mind- There is no chain that needs regular maintenance, no timing chain to worry about and no valve adjustments. |

do yourself a favor and demo both i think you will find your not settling in the least.....low maintenance, user friendly power, and ear to ear grin for the rest of your life! also do not sell short the xb9sx..if you get a chance to demo one you will find what a spectacular bike it is. |

Actually Buell tauts their low cost of ownership. Since it's a small company there have been recall issues over the years but they've become few and far between in recent years. I think there's going to be some growing pains with the 1125R but the XB line has been tweaked every year for 5yrs now and is well established and should be very dependable. The biggest gripe from most owners are dealers and service. It varies greatly so check out your nearest dealer and make sure they are pro-Buell and know their stuff. Considering how close your are to the source good dealers shouldn't be hard to find. |

I will be test driving the 9 and the 12 as soon as the weather clears and warms up at least 20 degrees. As far as a dealer is concerned, the nearest dealer is over 70 miles away. I just wish they would make a 12 with the blue. red and orange are just not my colors. |

they did make them in blue, and just so you know, all the xb lightning bodywork is interchangeable. you just might have to put a vent in the front of an older airbox but we can definatly show you how to do that if need be. |

+1 on the demo ride. That's what got me hooked! and you CAN do your own maintenance. I'm no mechanic but with the trusty owners manual it's a walk.

don't use the word "settled". settling would mean your credit is shot and you can only afford a honda rebel or equivalent. 2 months owning a cityx and i just keep getting happier. not saying there is anything wrong with any other bike. i went through the entire sport bike inventory window shopping before i picked buell. or did the bike pick me! like some sort of christine thing. the dealer being 70 miles away just means, road trip. mine is about 90 miles. very fun ride back. |

I think there's going to be some growing pains with the 1125R but the XB line has been tweaked every year for 5yrs now and is well established and should be very dependable. I will second that thought. The xb is quite reliable, and low maintenance. If you don't like red or orange, the Firebolt is available in a very sexxy white with blue accents, or black. |

MORE servicing? Yeah...air-cooled, pushrod V-Twin with no fairings and a maintenance-free belt...definitely higher on the regular service scale. O_o |

Who wouldn't want an American sports bike. When I considered getting a bike there was no hesitation. Sure my mom works at a Harley dealership so I got a sweet deal. But none the less its a great bike. Low maintenance, affordable, light weight and a blast to ride. |

when I took my first test ride on a Buell, I can't remember if it was in the second or the third block of the ride that I told myself that I had to buy one. Now after putting on over 35,000 miles on my two Buells, I still feel the same way every time I ride it. I live in a town home on a quiet side street and I almost always pull a wheelie when I go for a ride just to get the blood flowing! Great bike and a lot of fun to ride. I suggest taking a test ride and I think you too will become hooked! |

22K on my 04 XB12R and those were NOT easy miles. It's almost like the bike likes the hammering........... OH NO my bike is a sadist.......... or am I???? |

It seems my bike is also a masochist...maybe a Buell thing? Either way, I love mine and won't ever be Buell-less. And I'd like to echo the comments in this thread...more maintenance?!?! Where else you can get away without lubing and adjusting a chain, never flushing your coolant, no valve adjustments, all while averaging 56 mpg? Getting parts ordered is much easier than many Japanese bikes. The dealer's I've bought stuff from gets stuff in about a week....Suzuki routinely had me waiting 10-14 days! The HD lump has been around forever and although it clearly isn't the most technologically advanced, it is more than adequate for street and track duty. Oh and did your buddy try to tell you that the CBR's insurance would be lower than the XB? |

Insurance? I shouldn't even be aloud on a bike with my driving record! $35 a month. |

These bikes are super easy to work on. All you need is basic tool set and the service manual. I hope the weather warms up soon for your test ride. |

Don't do it! Owning a Buell is a sickness. All you ever think about is riding it. Every waking hour will be spent searching out new and interesting routes to ride. You'll look forward to doing your own maintenance. You'll spend too much time on this web site. You'll get tired of answering questions about the bike and the brand. You'll hate meeting Erik Buell at a bike show and finding out he's just a regular guy. You'll regret having a Buell when your friends start copying you and buy them. DON'T....repeat....DON'T DO IT!!!!!

I got lots of funny looks from people in their cars watching me with open jaws the day I bought mine. I wish all the staring was from the looks of the bike but I was laughing pretty manically at that point, and everyone could hear me even through my helmet. test ride, test ride, test ride. unless you like spraying chain wax on, I would suggest a Buell. I also pay waaaaaaay too much for insurance it seems..... (Message edited by clutchless on February 27, 2008) |

Buells are amongst the lowest maintenance bikes made. Buell parts are less costly then any other brand that I know of. |

Now this has definitely got to be the silliest thing yet! Let's see...you come on a Buell site and ask if it's a good idea to purchase a Buell over a CBR?? What on Gods green earth did you think everybody was going to say??? LOL Go post that same inquiry on a CBR or Honda site and hear their opinions and they will all be in favor of the Honda...DUUHHH.... The only honest advice you'll get is from your own heart... Go take a test ride on both and do your freakin' homework and then, and only then, will you get the honest answer... I own different brands due to my liking...not due to others opinions...Anybody who purchases anything due to opinions on a brand site is in for a world of $hit in all future decisions on the road of life! |

Guys and Gals, Don't mislead this fellow. The Buell will requires TONS of maintenance, compared to the CBR. Comfortable ergonomics = constant riding. (and more miles means more oil changes) Excellent electrical system supports many heated accessories = all-year riding (Leaving the house in the winter? Honda has to make a car to do that) Mega-torque = many burnouts and bulk buy discounts on rear tires (This is offset by the fact that the front tire will not require replacing as often, since it's usually found in the air) Many miles = many oil changes and the occasional set of spark plugs Excellent longevity = many years of riding. Yes, you'll spend more on maintenance on the Buell, because you're going to own it for the next 10 years and ride it constantly, instead watching your CBR1000 wear out after 10,000 wrist-folding, back-aching, valve-shimming miles. You'll probably need a new helmet, too, to fit around the enormous smile that will form from riding the Buell. |

Oh, and the Buell sports a nifty two-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Honda makes you pay extra for that, if it's even available. Trying to hit the 7 million mile mark in two years is a lofty goal, indeed. |

You got to test ride them. Then if you do want a Buell, you need to do some serious soul searching. If you decide on the Buell. I will pretty much guarantee alot of the sport bikers will try to bag on it because it is not what is written on in every motorcycle magazine. I say f---em and go with what feels right on the ride. Not what they say. You will be happier in the long run. -It is a sickness owning a Buell I bought mine at the end of 05 and enjoy it more and more everyday! Now I m trying to figure out how to get a second one! (Message edited by sgthigg on February 28, 2008) |
