Ok, I'm just an oil Noob. I had my last oil change on the Uly done at the dealer, and the service sheet just says Syn3. I need to buy a quart to top it off, does it come in different weights or is Syn3 a multi-weight oil? Thanks Kurt |

Syn3 is a multi weight Semi synthetic, & it's good for trans & motor oil. It's in my Trans, though I might have another synthetic in the motor at any given time. If you search the website, you can find a few thousand words on oil, easy. Any good Synthetic will work in the motor. You want a specific oil for the trans because of the glue holding the stator on, it is said. I don't take part in the oil religion wars, ( people argue about it, can you believe? ) & the Syn3 is plenty good enough, IMHO, it's also nice just to have to have one oil at hand. |

You want a specific oil for the trans because of the glue holding the stator on, it is said. The assertion is that some gear oils of the GL5 type contain sulfur which may corrode exposed copper. The interesting thing is that if your stator has exposed copper, it has surely already failed. All the windings are covered with insulating varnish for a very good reason. Corrected "GL4" to "GL5", thanks Sloppy. (Message edited by Blake on February 27, 2008) |

Correction -- it's the GL-5 gear oil that may contain sulphur which will corrode copper. Doesn't matter if it's synthetic or not. The debate is that it can corrode the wires at the epoxy interface at the stator. The only mfg. that I know of that specifically says won't corrode copper is the GL-5 gear oil from Redline. Mobil1 15w-50 is not only a motor oil, but also a GL-4 gear oil and works great in the tranny. I highly recommend it as the "one-stop" oil for the Buell. Bottom line: contact your oil manufacturer and ask them what to use. The tech's at their companies are VERY bored and can't wait for someone to ask them a decent question... |

Thanks Blake & Sloppy ... I mis forgot the problem. I just remembered there was a lube/stator issue, and long ago figured I'd just use Syn3 & forget it. So I did. Shifts great. ( and is within a rational percentage of discount store price.... more or less. ) |
