Evidently the British press doesn't have a very high opinion of Buells (the Ulysses in particular). I came across this article in the April Superbike. Ironically, a few pages later I found a full page Buell UK ad. I wonder if they knew the magazine would be organized like that?

Funny, BIKE magazine (UK) called a Buell the best handling bike just two years ago. http://a1264.g.akamai.net/7/1264/1354/a3055969211e 9e/www.buell.com/en_us/news_events/pdf/BikeTop50.p df Do you have a link to the article, the font is too small to read. |

Me thinks this writer is a pro at twisting words to his fancy. I"d like to see the whole articles that those quotes came from. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if it was all taken out of context. (Message edited by metalstorm on February 25, 2008) |

Is everything they're claiming about the "getoffs" really accurate? I never came across any of that information elsewhere. I mean...Mr. Buell himself? The picture they're painting isn't anything like how its been for myself. They claim 120 miles before the fuel light goes on? Are you fing kidding? The lowest I've ever seen my light come on is 140. And thats when I'm hauling balls. I mean, really, things like the key being inserted on the side instead of where everyone else puts it, or the hand warmers being too warm? Then don't use the highest setting you dunce cap. I could find worse things out there to complain about I guess. I'll be reading that a few more times... |

It was a sportbike magazine. Irregardless of what anyone says here IT ISN'T A SPORTBIKE. It is marketed as adventure/touring. It is no wonder they think it is the worst thing out there. Now I know Adrenaline made one a race bike but that thing was bout as stock as a XBRR. Sooo my opinion the article is no biggy. |

I thought the article, minus the colorful additions, was pretty fair. 1. It isn't as cheap as a VStrom. So what? I don't feel like I've been ripped off. 2. The key is in a weird place. Granted. I put the key in BEFORE I get on. No biggie. 3. The lights suck. Agreed. I upgraded mine. Few bikes have great lights. 4. Most IL4 folks will try to wring the bikes neck keeping it near redline. It ain't where it's happiest. Rider error? 5. Fuel range insufficient? Works for me. I usually need to pee by 150 miles. Wet pants really isn't the "adventure" I'm looking for. I think they must have gotten a brand new one. 6. It's not a KTM or BMW. Therefore it's a mechanical nightmare? 7. Brakes suck? I didn't care for the stock pads. Swapped out for new ones. Eight piston with stock pads should still be better than they described. Maybe not. 8. The engine is cold natured? I feel more vibrations when the weather's cold. The rubber is stiffer and translates more vibrations. Fair assessment. 9. The Ulysses sucks in heavy offroad? Yep. Fair assessment. 10. Rusty muffler. Very fair assessment. Buell needs to fix this. Overall, I think most of the niggles are minor and fixable. I think they "worst bike you can buy" is to sell magazines. |

the problem with british bike mags is that they don't understand anything that doesn't have low bars, full fairing, look like a race bike, four cylinders, an 'R' somewhere in the name (hope for the 1125R perhaps?) or is a BMW 1200gs. any bike that falls outside of that criteria is weird, and people who ride them are weird. i'm glad i'm a weird guy (and a Brit, but not from Yorkshire) |

I have a friend that lives just outside London who constantly tells me he'd love to own a Buell, but they are insanely expensive in the UK. He, instead, rides a Triumph (which was difficult to get too as he explained that only 10% of production remains in the UK. |

What's a numpty? idiot, fool, clown, retard, loser. A person that embarrasses themselves by making a mistake/decision/comment based on ignorance. as for buells being "insanely expensive" i don't think thats true. they compare with jap bikes or Triumph an XB12 retail is £7,750 ish, while a Triumph speed triple is almost the same price. a Yamaha FZ1 is £7200, a Ducati S4 Monster £8299, Kawasaki Z1000 £7345. the 'R' bikes such as R1, ZX10, CBR1000, GSX1000, are all around £9000/9500. thats list prices, no discount if you can get it. the 1125R price i have seen on Motorcycle News is given as £8495, so not bad a price if it can compete with the 'R' brigade not what i would call insane prices (Message edited by Mtch on February 26, 2008) (Message edited by Mtch on February 26, 2008) (Message edited by Mtch on February 26, 2008) (Message edited by Mtch on February 26, 2008) |

If they are going to break a gentleman's agreement for silence about "who crashed what", they can carry their own &^%$ water bottles for the rest stop in their own &^%$ hard bags. You think these things wheelie well alone, try doing it with all three tail bags stuffed to the gills with bottled water! If you rat him out to his lawyers, he should rat you out to yours. |

Most likely written by a little smurf that has to put on his platform shoes to *try* to pick up women. I do, however, agree with the rusty muffler issue. It's not a big deal to pull it and shoot it was cheap-o can of BBQ black either. |

At the risk of being lynched/banned, I'd say it's a reasonable assessment of the Ulysses and (sadly) an accurate perception of Buell in the UK. In 2003/2004 Buells were hot poop and they had a real chance of making significant inroads into the UK market. For reasons already discussed by my compatriots on the BadWeb, this opportunity has slipped by and now Buell UK find themselves in a very deep hole labelled 'weird'. The non-appearance of the 1125 over here has done nothing to help and the future for Buell does not look good. |

It's just me . . . I'm certain of that. I can't count on both hands the number of times that Erik and his ride have parted company. Few of our number have had the 4" needle of adrenaline driven through our chest cavity once, let alone twice. One of the best stories is when Erik was "flat line" and the ER Doctor was a friend screaming at him. Although without pulse or respiration, Erik could see him. The story gets much better. Find me one. . . I mean a single individual from one other motorcycle company in the world who has been tossed off one of his firms products at over 170 MPH while checking to see if something was right. It wasn't then; it was as a result of information gained. Erik Buell rides motorcycles. . . wow, there's new for the folks who pen this hogwash. Interesting stuff that frankly, at least in my personal case, elevates rather than diminishes my enthusiasm for Buells. Court . . what DOES tick me off is that he gets tossed putting his toes over the edge of the envelope. I get tossed due to lack of skills. Life's not fair. |

From bike: "Buell XB12R Firebolt £8799 »999cc in-line four »159bhp »181mph" How much creditability can you have, when you do something like that. |

>>At the risk of being lynched/banned, I'd say it's a reasonable assessment of the Ulysses<< i wouldn't do anything like that - i'll just say IMNSHO you are incorrect. Just like this magazine's headlines. (The part that annoys.) Maybe it is the worst bike a squid can buy - but the headline tells me it's the worst bike a schmo can buy. I'm a professional tester and journalist with a broad spectrum motorcycle magazine - probably the broadest coverage of any mag published anywhere - and it has done so for 23 years - one that doesn't have it's head stuck up a squid's arse. I extensively road test about 30 bikes a year and I rate the Ulysses as one of the best most versatile bikes on the market. Good enough out of all the bikes I ride to buy one. I acknowledge that if you are a CB600RR guy - like these guys market - the bike isn't for you - but neither can you do the sh*t I do on the Uly on the Honda - plus I'd need a Honda for each buttock. This lot is sensationalist tosh in the best 'The Sun' style of Brit tabloid press way of selling copies. (hmmmm boobies) The muffler rusts - big F***in' whoop. It's the worst bike on the market because of it. I hope I meet them at a press day. They won't enjoy the Big Dave act much. It can be as cruel as it is large. I would love to know Buell's reasoning as to why this hasn't been addressed by the factory. (Probably the same reasoning behind not fixing the headlight problem on the 12R.) |
