WHY go anonymous for that? I want one, I got the budget and the garage space. Just build it! I already lost out on the Dirty Bike. |

That links been there for the better part of a year . . . fun stuff. Let's see if the bike ever gets built. The folks in the UK assure me that dealers are accepting orders as I type this. It was June when it was announced. It requires very little save a few cosmetic changes to a plain jane sporty . . . what do you suppose is impeding deliveries? I wonder if Harley-Davidson will take the "parts bin bike" bashing? Let me know when the deliveries commence. |

OOOHH No, I think it is different enough to warrant the deposit. When we get one here everybody KNOWS its mine. (In orange of course) Those forks are different, different oil bag, swing arm, tank, insturement cluster, air breather, rearset shifter controls, fatter rear tire, distinct exhaust (which has to go). It has about as much in common with the current Sportster as the Xb does to the Tuber. There is a family lineage there. Holding my breath till they deliver it. Hopefully It doesnt end up like the Buell Muell Dirty Bike. (still hacked off about that one) |

It does exist. Think XB12 engine in a tube chassis. I have sat on them, even one with a set of soft saddle bags, tail bag and small fly screen.. Looks best in silver. Don't know when they will be in dealers in the EU tho. I have heard nothing about sales of it in NA. Later. (Message edited by prubert on February 22, 2008) |

I have liked that bike since the first time I saw pictures of it. I agree with City. The exhaust is the weakest part for me. I would love to see that bike with these pipes.
If they actually made the XR1200, it's real world performance was close to my Cyclone, and they kept the price reasonable, it would be the only new HD branded bike I have ever lusted after. Either that bike is really cool, or I am finally aging into their demographic. Bill (Message edited by bill0351 on February 23, 2008) |

The pictures are of preproduction models on display at the 2007 summer dealer show. Al and Carl asked me to share them with all of our customers as soon as they returned. |

Maybe the rousing success of the XLCR and the XR-1000 have something to do with it. Although I think those were two of the most beautiful Harleys ever made, the Buying public thought otherwise. |

>>>the Buying public thought otherwise. Actually. . . not unlike the Buell XBTT, the buying public was helped in shaping their skeptical opinion. You do recall the series of events that surrounded the release of the XR-1000? I bought both a 1977 XLCR and a 1983 XR-1000 the same day to add to my Sportster collection. The XLCR was a bike that was wholly mis-marketed. It was, and don't read this as it was "great to ride", a far better motorcycle than it was chalked up to be. The marketing people, predictably HD, were so caught up in creating an "aura" they forgot whom the bike was and who their market was. I'm still, after first writing about the XLCR in 1991, lusting to find one of the alleged 6 units VIN'd in 1979 with leftover parts. The XR-1000 was worse. In the time that passed between the premature announcement (see if this sounds like the "lame before release" story of the XR1200) and actually availability there were 2 prices increases. Then it got worse. The bike didn't perform as represented. No problem. Jerry Branch was standing by with the "speed kit" for another $1,000 that would solve everything. Jerry was over run with orders (you really HAD to have the speed kit if you bought the bike) and quickly fell behind. Think back to recent history and the release of the 1125R that was delayed something on the order of weeks, not the 8 months that the XR1200 website has been heralding "any moment now". . . and recall how testy folks got. Buell were liars, misrepresenters, abhorrently leading the motorcycling sheep into plopping down deposits and then failing to keep their promises. A motorcyclist, parted with his deposit money, is a tough customer. They buying public is a funny thing. Harley-Davidson has a group of folks who keep close track of them. They are not who or where you think they are . . . few read motorcycle magazines, not many (Buell is a bit higher than HD) dabble on the internet and it's the reason you are more likely to see a Buell ad in Field and Stream than some motorcycle mags. The buying public, early in the game, is a blank slate. They have expectations but they are largely shaped by how the company positions a product. Don't believe me. . . look no further than the XBTT. Arguably one of the best Buells ever built for the way most of us REALLY (guess what fraction of 1/100th of a % really spend any appreciable time racing?) rides. From the moment I rode the first pre-production XBTT my enthusiasm was boundless. It took the mindless gnomes in marketing to convince me how silly the bike was. . . I was teetering until the stupid "color this bike" contest. The "buying public" is an interesting group. I suspect someone at HD "trolled" the XR1200 before wanting eyes to see what kind of reaction they'd get. Perhaps it was better than anticipated and now they are scrambling to actually build one. Bear in mind that announcing is one thing, selling is another and there is a long time slot between for all the various certs. Who knows . . . interesting, huh? |

Bluzm2, actually that motorcycle your showing in that picture is for sale. It is a Jay Springsteen XR750 Replica Street Tracker with a Buell motor in it. They had it on display at this year's Chicago IMS. I liked that bike and here is a link to his website. http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2008/02/09/jay-s pringsteen-xr750-replica-street-tracker/ |

That Springer replica at the Chicago show was way cool. Looked really well done for a one-off, and the fella that makes them is a long time tracker. Really nice to talk to someone at the show that was not focused on top speed, magazine specs dictating what you should buy and a real passion for bikes. Wish I had 25K....... |

Curious what the XR1200 will weigh in at. I am guessing at least 525 lbs. Way too much. And it looks too much like a Sportster. The XR750 ain't no Sportster. Here is an idea..... if they want to finally do a real tribute to the best race bike ever made, have a racer make it. Contract this fella named Erik Buell to make it and use Buell as an in-house race shop. I think HD is afraid most will just see the XR1200 as a redone 883R. What they need is a streetable XR750. |

I must be the odd ball out The 78-79 XLCR is one of my top three favs The 57 sportster and 72 XR750 being the others. I never was a fan of the big twins. AND had Buell had the XB12Stt when I bought, that would have been the bike in orange in my garage. Now if I had Fried okra, peppers, jack cheese to go with my Ham and Eggs, then all would be good. Bring that bike to market here in orange, other wise I will go to Europe to get it. |

The Springsteen replica bike is being made by an old acquaintence of mine. His Dad is a very old school HD rider from WAY back. I went to my very first cycle race with him back in 1968 or so. It was a old style scrambles. If memory serves, he rode an old KR Harley. For more on the bike above, here's the link. www.springsteenreplicas.com Brad |

The 78-79 XLCR is one of my top three favs Yeah me too. Back then I wanted one real bad, I've still got the sales poster for it somewhere. It was what I thought was the only American Sport Bike, I guess back then it was. Now a days you can't find one you (I) can afford. I'd like to have one and build it with todays engine technology, suspension etc. Italicus, I like it! |
