Ustorque - here's what and where for the muffler material:

perforated stainless - type 304, p/n: pmx-006
http://www.smallparts.com/products/descriptions/pm x%20and%20pmxx.cfm

stainless steel wool - 434 medium & fine (1 lb each)
http://www.briwax-online.com/GMTStainless.html

I still need material for the tips and the support ribs...there's a get together tonight to review the final plan. I'll let you know what/where I find the rest of the goods.

Where did you get boots and pants? cost? any good deals?

Jim,can i get those plugs/tools today?

On your packing material,i used to use Refractory wool.Same stuff they use as insulation in boilers.I repacked my "KX" with it many times.Steel wool is an exhaust packing material?

Yep. I used to run a 2-layer SS wool/fiberglass repack kit on the Big Gun Exhaust on my KLR. It keeps the noise down about 95% as good as fiberglass, but it doesn't need to be replaced every month. I'd have run straight SS wool, but wasn't as resourceful as JP.

Thanks for the stickers, Torque!

And just when you all thought I had taken your money and run off to Canada to live like a robber-baron:

The NEBO patches will be (finally) shipping tomorrow. I'll turn them around to their respective owners as quickly as possible.

thanks for the info JP i got the stainless perf. from my shop today(i love free stuff) but wasn't sure what i was using for packing.

went through www.newenough.com for some new tourmaster pants and a pair of boots, saw them recommended on the XB board once and figured i'd give em a try, some good prices even better if you get lucky in the closeouts!

No problem Shawn, we'll keep posting pics of the progress. We may be needing more stainless wool...Eric is going to do a test fit latter this week.

I'll post a final material list and cost when we are complete.

Steel wool is an exhaust packing material?

Yes - used in many cars and custom muffler manufacturers...I found one site (twin brothers...or two brothers...I think) that is a custom exhaust place and that is all they use.

The website I bought the material from lists mufflers as a common use for the material hence the offering of type 434 - it stands up to the temps and exhaust gases better than other grades.

I hope to finish it this weekend if possible, Depends if all the materials come in or not.

Then do a little welding and on to my bike...

I finished installing my alternator last night, I had no idea my lights would be that bright w/ a correct charge....I am back to beating the thing silly! Still needs more power though!

eric are you welding the muffler solid or are you doing a removable end cap for packing?

i scrapped the dual outlet idea just didn't look good to me, picked up a big stainless fatty 3" oval for the tip looks better.

next time any of you guys need any metal products please feel free to ask me first before you buy it....i hate to see anyone shell out the money for the stuff if my shop has it on hand and i can get my hands on it.

I'm Thinking removable. JP is going to water jet an end cap.

He may need some scraps, unless he got some already.

I miss not working at a place that had a shop. Most things we make, are made from scrap metal. We pay for scrap...

I need to know what size stock to buy before I put in an order...so it doesn't look like you're going to be doing much in the way of welding this weekend...

Funny - all of a sudden Scotty has work to do...

just got my new pants and boots boys as for the pants typical tourmaster stuff nice pants pretty rugged, but the boots were a surprise. bought em off www.newenough.com . apparently SIDI tried to make a new line of value priced boots but it didn't pan out (boot name: SETUP) so they are selling them for $99.00 and they are great nice fit and finish and wicked comfortable. they come in black, blue, or red. highly recommended if any of you are looking for some boots for the season. anyways heres a few pics for you if interested.

I have looked at those boots on and off for quite awhile and decided because of your post to take another look. While on newenough checking them out, I found these also on closeout. They aren't really being discontinued, Oxtar is changing their name.

Oxtar SS Performance 2 Racing Boots

They had them in my size (42)
for only $79.00 (other sizes are as much as $119.00)! Hey Scotty - no more laces hanging down untied to distract you : ]

I was hoping to find one boot to meet all my needs, but have given up and realize that like my 3 jackets, 3 pairs of gloves and 2, soon to be 3, pairs of pants, I'll probably need 2-3 pairs of boots....

hey scott i will say this the setup boots require zero break in very comfortable right out of the box. they could easily be worn off the bike walking around w/ no discomfort.
