Since Dad dumped her, she has not started. I know Dad killed the battery after she ran out of gas. I bought a charger and fully charged, but nothing. I am not a super technical guy, so if someone could point me in the right direction... thank you in advance.

Hmmm an XB12s huh?
So now that it a fully charged battery, does it spin over strongly, or not even turn over?
That answer will change which branch of the debugging tree we go down... |

The starter motor has a large heavy duty cable bolted to it and a small gauge wire with a blade contact type connector. Make sure the small wire connector is plugged in. If it is not connected, you won't hear a click nor will anything else happen when you punch the start button. |

With the battery fully charged the starter makes the right noise, but the engine does nothing. No turning, no coughing, no backfiring, nothing. Help!

Bank angle sensor. Will cut electrics until it senses it is upright.
If you give the bike a shake it may reset itself.
If not try disconnecting the battery for an hour, reconnecting and then try it. |

Also may be the sidestand switch. |

Well, I tried the reset and nothing. Still won't start. I'll try looking at the starter cables... Where is the starter? What do i need to do to check if it is the sidestand sensor? What other avenues should I take?

Here's a thought. Put it top gear and give it a little push to build up oil pressure.

Well, I finally got around to checking the front spark plug and it was black as pitch. No wonder it wouldn't start. I assume that the aft plug will be the same. Any pointers on getting the rear plug out? Thank you.

To get to the rear plug, take off the airbox cover. You'll find a small access opening that leads to the plug cable. Some owners will remove the airbox floor to allow greater access but that's not necessary if one has the right tools.
A lot of people have good results using an extender and swivel socket to remove the plug. If you don't have a swivel, then best bet is to remove the airbox floor. |
