My son in law in Maryland has a '04 XB12s that I got for him last summer. Maybe 15K miles on it. He rode it all summer no problem, but a few weeks ago he called me stranded because the clutch wouldn't release. I called a fellow badwebber from Maryland (OCbueller) who went and rescued him (thanks again Steve). I told my boy to get a clutch cable & I'd fix it when I got there next. Turns out the cable was OK but the primary cover was busted internally where the throw out bearing presses on it. I called Kevin Drum and he told me its a common problem due to an improperly adjusted clutch. Anthony C. (mutation_racer) said exactly the same thing when I ordered a new Primary cover ($200) from Liberty. Heres's the thing. It's no problem to replace the cover & adjust the clutch properly by the book, but I'm wondering why it broke in the first place. The guy who I bought the bike from (one of my best riding buddies) bought it new and never adjusted it & neither did I. I trust Kevin's and Ant's judgment but it just doesn't add up. So now I'm wondering if there is some other thing that I need to check before I bust another $200 cover. Anybody have a similar problem? |

Call the Dealer. Buell has been "good willing" this problem. Not 100% sure but most I've seen on BWB have been covered. Neil S. |

I have had the same exact problem... I never adjusted the clutch either, and I am not sure if the dealer ever did... Actually I was on my way to the shop when it happened. I did not bother to "good will" the problem as Buell "good willed" pretty much my entire engine; cylinders, pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods, etc. |

I've got a 2004 XB12R and I adjust my clutch every oil change (2500 miles). Never had an issue. |

What do they mean by improper adjustment? I just did mine at fully seated and out 1/4 turn. What would cause a problem, screwing out too much from bottom or too little? Interex2050: What happened to your engine? Not mentioned in your profile. |

Scott, Sometime around 13k-14k miles I started to hear some unpleasant sounds coming from the engine. At first everyone just said that I had lost my mind, but eventually closer to 15k others started to hear it too as it got progressively louder. I thought it was the bottom end the dealer thought it was the push-rods. When they finally tore it apart they discovered the following: -cylinders/pistons where gouged up -connecting rods were loose They called in a "will call" and fortunately it went through. I never got an answer as to why it happened, and they did not let me keep the parts for further analysis. I would have to guess it had something to do with pinging, my XB was notorious for pinging all year round. So 3 or so years of that probably did it in. Aside from that I really have no idea what would cause such "complete" engine failure, as it was not abused. If you have more questions or want to discuss further just ask in the "1789 miles, No further comment" thread, I just don't want to "hi-jack" this thread. As for the profile... I should probably update that. |

Lack of an adjustment might also have contributed to the failure. Not sure of the mechanics and stresses on the cover. But if it was never adjusted it could have over stressed something just as much as an improper adjustment could. I also remember reading someone had a cheap fix for the cover, weather it was temporary or long-term I am not sure |
