hey....i ride a buell firebolt and i had some questions about putting a turbo on because i can not find information anywhere on how to do it. if anyone could help im looking for a full detail or as much detail as possible on how to turbo the bike and set the motor up so it does not just blow up. i have worked on motors all my life but never really got into turbo until i went riding with my friend who has a gsxr 750. which i must admit is a really sweet bike. i love riding buells and i do not want to go to a foreign made bike...i just want to build my buell up to smoke by his gsxr. i know a good amount on turbos but not about putting on a bike. so i was wondering if possible i could have a little help on what kind of turbo i should use...i was planning on putting the turbo under bike right before exit on muffler....which included cutting exhaust and putting new flanges and what not but i love projects. mayb it is not the best spot to put the turbo? this is why i am asking. just want to know exactly what it takes and how to on putting turbo on my firebolt. i also want to know if anyone knows someone who makes custom gears because i want to make the gearing on the bike longer. i figure longer gearing...which could come from sprockets as well...and a turbo would make my bike plenty fast to smoke by my buddy on his gsxr. but please if you are able to give me a good detailed description on building the motor for a turbo and what kind of turbo and such i should get....also here is a picture of my bike before i put the streetfighter exhaust on...and before i painted it black. |

Perhaps he's thinking normally aspirated Firebolts are Old School. Search the archives. Pretty sure there's a real clean turbo inst'l by someone in Australia. |

On the upside, I believe turbocharging your bike will be fairly easy since the frame has a nice big hole for the pressure pipe. |

Maybe i should've posted along with this>>>>>>. As the owner of BOTH a tuber AND XB i'd SUGGEST a newbie post to the relevant forum |

since everyone is still posting here....just one question...what do you suggest would be a good sized turbo for the bike...im looking to buy a small turbo whether off car or something but very small...that spools quickly...i would go to one of the guys you mentioned but i cant understand the website because it always keeps going into another language and i dont have a ton of money to be spending. the turbo and intercooler are two main things just want idea on couple diff ones that may work...thanks |

With your limited funds and knowledge, I doubt you'd ever be able to build a turbo XB that could keep up with even a stock 750 Gixxer. Even if you could make enough power to keep up in acceleration (like on a 1/8 or 1/4 mile dragstrip), the 6-speed transmission of the Gixxer practically guarentees that it will get you on a top end run. My advice is to enjoy your Buell, learn how to ride it... and pass your friend in the corners. |

+1 It's sad to see people posting how they want to build a GIXXER killer Buell. It just cannot happen. At least,if it could, the outlay would exceed the cost of the bike you want to beat. These machines are near the limits of reliability as it is. |

Check www.turbosunleashed.com. Chris specializes in turbos for 2.2 turbo dodge cars from the 80s, and they had one (a Garrett VNT25) that is just about perfect for a Buell. It's a variable vane turbo, relatively small, so it spools real quick. It was designed for an optimum 1.4-1.8 liter engine size; it was really too small for the 2.2 Dodges (that's why I upgraded mine to a VNT28) but would work great on a bike. I think aerocharger uses a version of the VNT on their kits. Things to think about when playing with boost: lower your compression, retard your timing and/or install a boost-referenced timing system that pulls it back further for each pound of boost, get a boost referenced fuel system (more boost increases the fuel pressure and keeps you from going lean), and install an air/fuel gauge off your O2 sensor so you can see whether you're getting enough fuel. Only a *little* detonation under boost will hole a piston. I have an ashtray on my desk to prove it - 3 seconds of detonation at 24psi in my 2.2, and I can strain pasta thru this piston. Oops, heheh. |

Take a look at the Firebolt about have way down the page, the one with the reptilian paint or vinyl. That looks to be a turbo to me, don't know if that is his bike or not.http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/43/ 335934.html?1202363213 |

If you want to track them down on the net Natli Enterprises in Sydney, Australia and S&R Pro in Sydney as well have both done Harley/Buell turbos. A lot of knowledge with these folks. Good luck. |

Brian, turbo size will be important as will bearing type. Buell/HD motors run very low oil pressure so you must get a ball bearing turbo. It needs to be mounted high enough so oil drains back to crankcase easily--though my aftermarket oil pump has an extra scavenge port labeled"turbo",I am using it on the turboed racebike. Now that the ecm can be hacked you may be able to address fueling issues as fuel needs change with boost numbers. Ideally you need a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator,a better fuel pump, maybe better injectors,--depending on HP numbers, sealed plenum, custom exhaust, etc,. There is also an aftermarket boost referenced FI controller available from Tuneboy in Aus. I have one that I may be selling. Biggest thing is understanding the fueling under boost needs as going lean will be BAD!! Intercooler not really needed unless you are going for big boost numbers, but look at blow-off valve. Let me check to see what turbo I have that I got off eBay,it was off a Saab or a Subaru and is decent size for a bike and ball bearing.--IHI RH4 is turbo. I have used several Aerochargers with good luck, self contained oil system and variable vanes for boost control. I have a line on one if you are interested, but they are more expensive than a standard turbo. But no oil system plumbing or wastegate needed. |

Geez, some of you know how to make a fellow buell rider feel welcome. A turbo xb would be waaay cool, give the guy a break. He could be riding something else instead of a buell. |

Ridrnkink18, I was planning a similar project. The easiest and cheapest turbo is a Garrett T-3. They are all over Ebay. You can also get the boost control blow off valve and fuel pressure boost regulater. Your 2 main problems after fab. & instalation is MAPPING your ECU and Detonation with the high compression pistons. I won't run over 4 PSI of boost or you will be looking for trouble. hope this helps |

William, just be sure you get a ballbearing turbo,IIRC only the Garret GT bseries are BB. I have a customized GT 2850 IIRC. T-3 may be plain bearing and require higher oil pressure than Buell puts out.5-8 psi depending on fueling should be doable. |

firemanjim, i have a t25 sitting in my garage, is that a ball bearing turbo? I have a feeling it isnt, but figured it wouldnt hurt to ask. |
